Help me get my Web 2.x (or are we on 3.x now? I've lost track) on. I'm an old-school Web 1.0 developer who wants to kickstart himself into slightly more modern UI and user experience paradigms, and I have a project in mind (of course). The challenge? No expensive tools.

My research group currently tracks our expenses (for lab supplies, travel, etc.) by printing copies of receipts and then manually tallying them in an Excel spreadsheet. Can anyone recommend a web service that will make this process easier? We'd prefer something free (or self-hosted), but are open to low-cost options as well.

I am a teacher at a high school that will be providing netbooks to every single student this fall. I am trying to consider ways that this will be helpful in the classroom, particularly in a math classroom. If you knew that every child in the classroom had their own netbook and the classroom were wireless, what would you like to see happen that would help students learn math? Please fire away ideas. All are welcome - whether brainstorm ideas or maybe you know of a particular website or web-based tool that would help students. Particularly, I'd like to assess students' progress as they learn as well as to provide them multiple ways to learn/experience the fundamental concepts in a math course. What would YOU have wanted if you had a laptop and wireless in high school? Thanks for your suggestions!!!

My friends and I have what we think is a pretty lucrative, clever, and unique idea for a web-service. However, none of us are especially web or business savy, but we are enthusiastic and confident and so would still like to move forward with the idea.

What was the name of the service that provided you with a free 800 number and credit card processing? Their model was that they took a percentage of the credit card fees and you billed your customers through them. It was a very neat way to setup a small service business with almost no overhead.
Are they still in business?

I'm looking for a web application (preferrably Open Source) that will help me accomplish the following: I have a service business that works on digital files for clients. I'd like to broaden my reach through web, so want to give clients/public the ability to upload files to me and for me to keep track of who those files are from, and to be able to invoice them and track when they have paid, etc. so I can return the finished file to them. I'd like it to work with Paypal.

I finally convinced my boss that we could manage a blog. The blog would be (in fact already is) on an existing community site with other arts organizations; my idea is to get it going, and provide links in both directions. This is at absolutely no cost to us, and I've worked out a rotation so no single person needs to write more than one entry per year. Then she started talking to her marketing guy.

What are some alternative business models on the internet besides selling antiques and books? I have been tasked at school with brainstorming ideas for alternative business models including revenue generating websites and internet based services. That revenue could come from advertising, AdWords, Software as Subscription, or any other alternative model. Things that quickly come to mind are: 1) Subscription based software for take-out restaurants, 2) Residential helpdesk service using GoToMyPC type software, or 3) iTunes for call centers ( Jukebox while your on hold ). If you ran a startup, what would it be? Are there a finite amount of ways to generate revenue?

If I want to create a high-end social media website, and I want it to be built (designed and coded) by a reputable shop in the NYC area, who are my best potential partners, and is there some kind of directory or forum on which I can find a list? I'm talking real professional stuff that involves projects over $100k.
I'm not talking just a website, but choosing (or building) a CMS, having an understanding of the social media space, being able to do original design work and custom functionality, understanding user experience, and creating/customizing blogs, forums, downloads, voting, and other such stuff.
Please... I know how to google. I am looking for either specific recommendations for partners, or places to look or post queries or RFPs.
Thanks!

Lately, the concept of "friends" seems to have become incredibly diluted by the casual use of the term by Facebook, MySpace et al. But in "the real world" what do you consider to be important when you are
making and becoming friends? Is it how long you've known someone? How frequently you meet up? What you have in common? Something more intangible?
Also, I'd love recommendations of any books looking at the psychology of how people become friends.
