I have an awesome secret work project, but I'm worried that I'm going to get in trouble if I pursue it. Who can I get to help? How can I best negotiate the office politics? Essentially what I want to do is overhaul our website, but it not my place to do so, nor can I easily keep credit for my idea. A little more detail inside (sorry to be so vague)... [more inside]

Three years ago, a friend and I began developing a web app that allows for instant video conferencing. It uses 15kbs, and uses Flash to achieve its internet goodness. It just works, no problem. And we have had success with it - as a product at two separate companies, no less, building it from scratch both times. Up until now we have been charging for it, month to month, as a service for businesses that can want something better than IM chat. (It has a lot of extra "bells and whistles.") But now we want to switch it up. We want to go Web 2.1. [more inside]

Within the last few weeks I came across a website that listed something like 20 steps for getting Web 2.0 savvy, except that the name was most likely nothing like that and now I can't seem to find it anywhere. I recall that one step was supposed to be completed each week, and it involved things like creating a blog and getting a flickr account, etc. It may have been put together for some type of university course. My google-fu is failing me!

A Web 2.0 way to collaberate with one other person on creating a bibliography/catalogue of references.... I normally use a spreadsheet for this, but the person who is helping me won't always have access to her computer or be able to load MS Excel from a remote computer. We are working to enter about 500 items in a bibliography; the info need to be sortable, both alphabetically and for some numeric values. There will probably be up to ten fields per item. I know there are some collaberative spreadsheets, like Google Spreadsheet, and that is a pretty good option for the basics. However, I would like to turn this into more than a list, and adding these features would be great: the ability to also store URLS that we've used as sources, as well as add new ones as we work. the ability to tag (and search by tags) the items we enter. even the ability to store images and sound files as entries... Does anyone know of any online tools that can do this? Or have any other suggestions?

What social networking sites are there for managing personal donations? I have some projects in mind that require more resources than I have available. I'd like to set up some system for people to donate both money & expertise to help me take my ideas & realize them. I could just put up a little writeup with a PayPal Donate button on my personal domain & point to it from various places I frequent, but I'd like to see if any of the donation-oriented social networking sites have any elements that'd make them a more attractive venue for my plea.

I'm trying to get into the spirit of "Web 2.0"-ish news sites -- the ones that let users tag, vote on, share and produce their own stories. But contrasted with the fireside feeling of reading blogs, the news-aggregator experience has seemed sort of cold, fragmented and short on users. What hot, promising or lively user-generated news services have you discovered?

Apparently there is an effort to rethink the role of the internet (and other communications technologies) in disaster relief. The idea is that a well-thought out information consodlidation and distribution would not require government and could be done cheaply and rapidly. Does anyone know more about this and where I could go to help? I believe there may even be a conference later this year.
