Overriding Chrome Browser Overrides heads-up display

Chrome Browser: When I'm in dev mode and have overrides enabled (for example: "iPhone - iOS 6 / 640x980 / Emulate touch events / CSS media: screen"), Chrome throws a black box over the upper left corner of the web page with status in red text (for example: "Overrides: User-Agent / Device Metrics / Touch / Media") It is omnipresent and unnecessary. How do I turn that black box off? [more inside]

What's the division of labour in web development?

I want to start doing freelance web work, but I'm not sure what I'd like to specialise in. I'm competent with python, PHP, html, css, javascript and angular as well as doing designy things like UX and photoshop. Previously I've always built whole websites from start to finish and now I'd like to pick a particular element and develop my skills to professional level in that role, but I'm not sure how it breaks down and how the size of the company/project increases the numbers of roles.

Best Practices for Database Interfaces on the Web?

I'm in the earliest possible stages of building a web interface that will make it easy to display, graph, download, summarize, and interact with a wide variety of data. If you use scientific data from the internet, what are some of the websites you've encountered that make using data the easiest, most intuitive, and give you the best control? Also, what are some must-have features for you, and some of the best and worst design decisions the site builders have made? [more inside]

Is there anywhere decent to look for freelance web work?

I'm a frontend web developer with quite a long resume. I work full-time but I'd like to pick up some freelance, remote work in my spare time. I'm wondering if there are any places to look besides my personal network, Craigslist, and those awful "Rent-a-coder" sites where you get underbid by overseas folks who'll do it for $9/hr. What are the best web development companies to work for in Toronto?

I'm a front-end web developer (HTML, CSS, jQuery) just starting out. I have a good portfolio from doing work for friends and a few businesses. I'm self-taught and therefore lacking some of the confidence that comes with the feedback you get in a structured learning environment or working tightly with other developers. I want to get in with a web development company/agency that has a great work environment. What would you say are the best web dev companies in Toronto in terms of great work/life balance, great (bright, comfortable) office space, and mentorship/on-going learning opportunities? (Opportunities to work abroad with the company would also be welcome!). Thanks for the info!

How to create HTML/CSS ordered lists for Sections of a document?

I am looking for a method of displaying a list item's parent number in a list with nested sublists, in the way sections of a document would be displayed. Example:
...
8. Defining Custom Counter Styles: the ‘@counter-style’ rule
8.1. Counter algorithms: the ‘type’ descriptor
8.1.1. repeating
8.1.2. numeric
...
I'd like to use only the ol and li tags and CSS styling, but HTML lists will only display the number of the current node. Thoughts? [more inside]

Im looking for some advice on the best way to structure a web project

Im looking for some advice and suggestions on the best way to structure a project. My client has 4 products (SAS) and although they are related most people would only use one due to the specialist nature of each. Currently only one of these products has a website and there is no main company website. They are looking to introduce a main company website either incorporating each of the 4 products within it or having a separate company site and each product has its own separate site with the main company site acting as a knowledge base to establish them as an authority in field they work in. Im wondering what the best approach would be from a usability point of view and an SEO points of view? I guess from an SEO point of view each product sitting on its own domain and being targeted to certain keyphrases might be more preferential than one site will all the content in? Im wondering if anyone knows of any examples out there that handle this particularly well

How can a Canadian on a working holiday visa in Japan get a work visa to stay longer?

Always desiring to experience living in Japan, I moved in the country from Canada almost a year ago on a working holiday visa, which will expire next month. My life here is stable so far, including a job at a company willing to sponsor me for a work visa. I want to live in Japan for a longer period, but the problem is I don't seem to meet the requirements for a visa. I am aware that getting married is the easiest way, but unfortunately, I do not have that possibility. Is there anything I can do to stay and work in Japan longer? [more inside]

Web development big picture for a non-web programmer?

Can you give me any pointers on learning web development? Unlike other similar questions in the archives (1, 2), I have a lot of programming experience. I haven't really followed web programming practices closely, however, because without keeping closely involved, it has been hard to sort out useful stuff from buzzwords and fads. How to render image like in google picasaweb?

How to render image like in google picasaweb?: I'm developing a web page. If I use img tag to put image in the web page, while loading the page, image loads very slowly (especially large images). Also the upper part of image is loaded first and then the lower part, as page is downloaded from server. But in applications like google picasa, a very low quality version is rendered first, so that you see the whole image at once (even though its blurred), slowly as the page is downloaded, image becomes sharper. How can I implement this functionality in my web page? Can someone please point me to helpful resources regarding this?

I've knocked up a website which is modifed from some of the templates from the layout reservoir. However the top bar which contains the image is causing problems under some browsers (IE6 and Firefox being two) because the height doesn't match the image height which means that the text is obscured. Any suggestions? [more inside]

Is it difficult to change to LAMP/Java from ASP/.NET? Is the open source thing really sticking?

I have been looking at changing my web development focus from Windows/ASP/.NET to LAMP(Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python/Perl) because my gut is telling me that this is where things are going. Oh, Java should be in there as well.

What's the skinny on LAMP in the real world (Netcraft surveys aside)? Is it difficult to change to LAMP/Java? Is the open source thing really sticking?
