I have started getting interested in how websites work, and am intrigued by the stories about those coding camps where people can jump right in. I am kind of wondering if I could make a go of it in coding, but I don't have much of a background. How can I learn more about front-end coding, experience design, etc. in an efficient, cost-effective way? (Is this a stupid idea?) [more inside]
I've been making websites since 1997, when I set up my first GeoCities site learning out of the HTML for Dummies Quick Reference. Sadly, my skills plateaued around when I was graduating college in 2008. I've got seven days of free time coming up in a sort of work mini-sabbatical... help me get up to date! [more inside]
What is the best resource on layouts in webpages, specifically with the use of CSS and other web technologies? This has always been something that's been tricky for me and I'm wondering if there's something out there that really sums it up well.
Can anyone provide pointers for setting up a robust digital image archive on the cheap? [more inside]
I'm trying to remember a site I once saw offered up as an example of good high information density web design. I think I originally saw it on AskMe but can't find it now - it was a parts catalog (lots of screws and other stuff), white background, green trim, I think the name of the company was a surname starting with M. The primary method of using the site was searching for parts by category, and it had lots of small black and white photos. Any idea what I'm thinking of?
I need a pure CSS navigation menu solution for a static, one page application, the simpler the better. [more inside]
I am designing a website for a set of museum exhibits. The curator designed the museum panels so two items are displayed on each panel and the viewer experiences them in each other's context. If we were making a book instead of a website, we would place these items on facing pages. What is the equivalent of facing pages in web layout? Can you think of websites that pair items so they are experienced together (i.e. without scrolling down)? [more inside]

I've been toying with the idea of starting a website that's sort of half forum, half store. I have a general understanding of how the web works, but I haven't done anything web design-ey for about ten years, and even then I was definitely quite amateur. What would I need to do to get going? I'm a solo UI designer for an ad agency & I'm looking for good website or blogs that'll inspire me to make cool & effective user interfaces. Individual websites are cool & all ,but what I'm really looking for are sites like TheFWA or SmashingMagazine that curate cool designs. Bonus points for sites that look at e-commerce websites. Fellow web designers: Where do you get inspiration?

I was looking at the webpage for a sci-fi webcomic called Drive, and I noticed that the web designer had included a modified version of the RSS icon that meshed very nicely with the feel of the webpage. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed any other websites that had similarly jazzed up (or down, I guess) the RSS icon to better fit their page. To be clear, I'm not just looking for fancy versions of the icon (Google image search turns up hundreds of those), but instances of altered icons being used well in actual webpages. [more inside]
Im looking for some advice and suggestions on the best way to structure a project. My client has 4 products (SAS) and although they are related most people would only use one due to the specialist nature of each. Currently only one of these products has a website and there is no main company website. They are looking to introduce a main company website either incorporating each of the 4 products within it or having a separate company site and each product has its own separate site with the main company site acting as a knowledge base to establish them as an authority in field they work in. Im wondering what the best approach would be from a usability point of view and an SEO points of view? I guess from an SEO point of view each product sitting on its own domain and being targeted to certain keyphrases might be more preferential than one site will all the content in? Im wondering if anyone knows of any examples out there that handle this particularly well

Always desiring to experience living in Japan, I moved in the country from Canada almost a year ago on a working holiday visa, which will expire next month. My life here is stable so far, including a job at a company willing to sponsor me for a work visa. I want to live in Japan for a longer period, but the problem is I don't seem to meet the requirements for a visa. I am aware that getting married is the easiest way, but unfortunately, I do not have that possibility. Is there anything I can do to stay and work in Japan longer? [more inside]

A friend is considering going to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco for "Web Design and New Media" with the goal of becoming a web designer. Questions are (a) Is this school well-regarded by potential employers and (b) is it a good value for the tuition? They have zero interest in doing straight programming without design work involved.
