I'm developing a custom 404 page using .htaccess to redirect to the 404.html. I'm trying to use PHP (via an include in the 404.html) to show the referring page (using $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER']). This works fine. I'd also like to return the bad URL that originates the 404. Is this possible using PHP? [more inside]

Hi there collective mind, I need help for a project finding a script (preferably php) to generate personalised imitation news stories. Something like this or this. Anything which superimposes letters onto a nice background would be great. Failing that anything that will change certain parts of an article into names/user entered text would be fantastic. Electronic-free-beers on me to anyone that helps. Sorry for being such a programming-cretin.

I'm currently accepting any recommendations for a simple, lightweight, web-based task management system. I do not need full project management capabilities, but I would like the ability to track time spent. In lieu of finding a suitable system, I would also solicit any web UI designers to work with me to build the aforementioned application (if a suitable one does not exist) and release it as open source.

A client wants to enable fiile uploads via their web site. The web site is hosted outside the company and the files need to be uploaded to their FTP server which is hosted within or on-site at the company. Thus far all the components I've looked into upload to the web server. Is this simply the only option? Can anyone recommend a good component or alternate method? PHP, ASP are fine.

I need a new way of transforming XML with XSL. Till date I've used PHP's Sablotron, which I absolutely love and is simple to use, but my host keeps forgetting to enable and include it each time they recompile Apache, so I was wondering if someone here knows of a way to do the same with either Perl or JSP/Tomcat or even PHP as long as it is without Sablotron's xslt_create(). I have a friend whose baby is getting christened. As a little present I'd like to provide them with an easy-to-operate website through which they can store and display photos of the child as he progresses, and supply news (essentially a blogging factor). Though I'll be setting it up and am pretty good at tech-stuff, the operators of the website (the parents) aren't so it'll need to be as simple as possible for them to do things like upload photos and post news of the baby. PHP content management systems seem like the logical solution, and I've looked at a few ideas (like using Gallery for the photos, and embedding it in a site) but I was wondering what do you all recommend?

I know how to make database-driven web sites using Windows servers, Access, IIS, and ASP.

I want to learn how to do the same using Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, and... whatever you use instead of Access.

Where do I start?

I know, I know -- not another web photogallery AskMe question, but: I've actually settled on the gallery itself. I'm using JAlbum. Having made the choice, though, I'm left with two questions:

1. JAlbum makes nice galleries, but doesn't create a top-level index page. (I could hand-code it, but my wife will be doing most of the updating and I don't want her to have to go mucking around in HTML.) The easiest solution, I'd think, would be just to reformat the directory listing into something attractive -- all I really need to communicate to the user is descriptive folder names and upload dates, but I'd prefer to make something more handsome than the standard Apache page. Can anyone recommend a particular PHP file system manager or other solution?

2. JAlbum's auto upload is ridiculously slow -- better just to FTP it. When JAblum makes a gallery, though, it includes a lot of stuff I'm not using -- icon sets, borders, etc. It's not a ton of space, but I'm going to uploading a lot of these galleries, and it'll add up. Is there a programmatic way I can stop JAlbum from including all this, instead of weeding it out before each upload? (I'm using the BluPlusPlus skin.)

I have been looking at changing my web development focus from Windows/ASP/.NET to LAMP(Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python/Perl) because my gut is telling me that this is where things are going. Oh, Java should be in there as well.

What's the skinny on LAMP in the real world (Netcraft surveys aside)? Is it difficult to change to LAMP/Java? Is the open source thing really sticking?
