Cloud-based web database?

I'm looking for a cloud-based database solution with a web front end. The idea is that you could upload an Excel spreadsheet or CSV file (or Access export), and then customize a front end query that will bring back results. [more inside]

I need a tool to replace DabbleDB

The online database tool DabbleDB is closing up shop this Wednesday. It's a great tool - excellent ui, cloud availability for data entry and access, easy RSS feeds. Any recommendations on another tool that offers the same? I've looked at Zoho and found it inferior in every way.

Looking for an advanced web calendar

A colleague is looking for a calendar to use on their training company's web site. They would like to pull from a PHP-driven database of their course outlines to display the course names on the appropriate dates in the calendar, with a link for each course listing on that date that would display the full course outline to the user when clicked. One or more courses could be offered on any given date. Is there a customizable product that you would recommend for the job, or are they looking at contracting someone to build this from scratch?

Best successor to DabbleDB?

(Asking on behalf of my wife) I'm looking for an online relational database service. My wife's business has been using DabbleDB, which is a fine service, but since the company was acquired by Twitter for unrelated technology, the future of DabbleDB is uncertain at best. So far Zoho Creator seems like the best alternative, but it's much less appealing than DabbleDB. I've looked at quite a few others, none of which seem ready for prime time. Is there some other online database service that we should be looking at?

I can build it, I just need to know what kind of bricks.

[web programming filter] I need to build a web page that displays spreadsheet data. The data in the spreadsheet changes depending on which user is logged in to the site. Some of the data is preset and some is entered by the user (and saved between sessions). What might be the most efficient programming solution and the easiest to maintain? [more inside]

I Need A Web Page Archiver That Does This...

I use DevonThink and have decided it's a bit of overkill for my purposes. So here's what I'm looking for: I want a tool that allows me to save web pages from within the browser of my choice. I want a series of Javascript pseudo-bookmark buttons along the top of my browser, each one corresponding to a category within the application. E.g., I might have buttons/categories for "Book Reviews", "Recipes", "Gadgets To try", etc. So, if I'm looking at a book review I want to keep, I click on the "Book Review" button and it is copied and stored by the application. I'd prefer to do this locally, but I'd consider an online solution. I am not, however, looking for a glorified bookmark service. I want something that copies pages and makes them available for searching and reading within the application. Oh yeah, it's for OS X.

Database schema for a site like 43 Things?

Can someone please help me understand how a database for a site like 43 Things (www.43things.com) works? There are users, tags for categories, user comments (for categories), and comments that can be associated with other comments. I understand that you would need a user table, a comments table, and a tags table but how do you create a schema for a site like this that works effectively? What kind of table structure is needed and how do the tables interrelate?

internet archives other than archive.org

Where archive.org fails: I'd like to research the development of news websites - specifically those established by traditional media companies (CNN, The New York Times, etc). While archive.org is a valuable resource, many of the sites I'd like to look at block the automated scripts (robots) that make archiving possible. What's more, some of the sites archived are woefully incomplete and are missing images, etc. Is there an alternative to archive.org or another resource that I might use? [more inside]

Managing JAlbum

I know, I know -- not another web photogallery AskMe question, but: I've actually settled on the gallery itself. I'm using JAlbum. Having made the choice, though, I'm left with two questions:

1. JAlbum makes nice galleries, but doesn't create a top-level index page. (I could hand-code it, but my wife will be doing most of the updating and I don't want her to have to go mucking around in HTML.) The easiest solution, I'd think, would be just to reformat the directory listing into something attractive -- all I really need to communicate to the user is descriptive folder names and upload dates, but I'd prefer to make something more handsome than the standard Apache page. Can anyone recommend a particular PHP file system manager or other solution?

2. JAlbum's auto upload is ridiculously slow -- better just to FTP it. When JAblum makes a gallery, though, it includes a lot of stuff I'm not using -- icon sets, borders, etc. It's not a ton of space, but I'm going to uploading a lot of these galleries, and it'll add up. Is there a programmatic way I can stop JAlbum from including all this, instead of weeding it out before each upload? (I'm using the BluPlusPlus skin.)

Building a Check-Out System

Suppose I wanted to build a web site on which a number of items was listed that were available for members of that web site to sign out. I would want the status of items (in/out) to be viewable by people looking to take out items in real time. What would I need to do this and who would I hire to do it? In addition, what would I expect to pay? What's the best way to find such a person?
