How can I create a social networking site? I am in Southern California (Inland Empire/Orange County) and interested in building a social networking/message board/blog site along the lines of Sermo or Metafilter that isn't really about customizable media and meeting friends, as much as it is for people within a certain specialty, let's say the veterinary community, to share their ideas about their expertise with peers, receive newsletters relevant to their work, and ask for their peers' opinions or advice. I think the title explains it all: I'm looking to get a list of all files in a specific directory from a web server- www.site.com/docs/. The thing is, there's an index.htm file in that directory so if I browse to it, I just get the index file. Is there any way to find out the names of all files in that directory, scripting or otherwise? [more inside]

so my friend is trying to locate an online service whereby one can type a message to a phone number over the web, and an operator than reads that message to the other end over the phone. So essentially its a computer text-to-voice over phone service, it may be intended for deaf-blind individuals. any ideas?

What recommendations do you have for an intranet wiki? I need: - page-level access controls - a simple calendar of events (birthdays, travel dates, etc) - written in PHP I love MediaWiki, but there is no concept of private pages (there is a plugin script that supports it, but I want something in the core to ease upgrades). I've also checked out Wackowiki which looks good, but doesn't seem to have any calendar integration. Any suggestions?

I'm using FireFox 1.07 for Windows XP. Previously, when I typed "dict [word]" into the address bar, FireFox would take me to the dictionary.com definition for [word]. Now typing in the same command just takes me to the first result of a Google search for "dict [word]," the same as if I typed anything into the address bar. Recently all my Firefox bookmarks disappeared as well. I haven't updated Firefox or changed anything that I know of. What happened, and how do I restore the old functionality?

I am taking a brain-painful networking class (hint: it's all about the routers, baby!) and the studying is intense. It's hard, but I'm holding my own. I see questions here on AskMe that bring really cool answers from lots of folks, with a lot of repeat answerers, which leads me to ask, How Did You Learn What You Know About Computers/the Internet? Was it in school? Did you apprentice with someone who had m4d sk1lz? Did you teach yourself? Other?

Browser questions: (1) are there any browsers that have word-wrap options? I find that when I read certain pages, specifically Usenet via Google Groups, each line runs way past the edge of the screen, and I have to scroll to the right to read. (2) Are there any browsers that have word-wrap options for print? I'm tired of having to remember to set orientation to landscape so the right edge of text doesn't get cut off.
