I have a tankless water heater (a Takagi T-K Jr.) and am in need of a new dishwasher. The dishwasher we're replacing is an old (at least 15 years old if not more) Maytag with a heating element and it's always done a sufficient job. I was planning to replace it with a Bosch, but just learned that new Bosch dishwashers don't have a heating element...so I'm wondering if the water will get hot enough to clean the dishes. Our Northern VA household of three adults recently lost its hot water, due to a failure somewhere in the works of our natural-gas, tank-type water heater. Having wrestled this appliance a few years back to replace (what I thought to be) a faulty thermocouple, I was initially pretty confident, but that confidence has begun to ebb as the battle enters day four. Handyman plastered around water heater ceiling vent--should I have him redo it, and if so, what is the preferred method? [more inside]
Our water heater has started making some noises, and it's 13-14 years old, so probably time to think about replacing it. Unfortunately, it looks like the brand (American Water Heater Company) may have taken a turn for the worse; all the reviews I find online are exceedingly negative, mostly regarding faulty parts and terrible customer service. This is a basic electric water heater and we'd like to replace it with the same sort, since it works well for us. What are the best companies to buy from?
I'm trying to figure out whether (and, if so, when) to change our electrical water heater. [more inside]

We recently purchased a low capacity instant-on water heater for a small building we put up last summer. We left it pressurized during a freeze and had a blowout on the copper tubing. How can I get this repaired? [more inside]
My natural gas water heater just got replaced and a couple of oddities: 1) if I have my shed door shut all the way for a day, the next time I walk in there, it smells of natural gas (not an overwhelming odor, but you know the gas is present in the air); 2) the hot water doesn't last for an entire shower like the old water heater had. We have a storage tank water heater from the mid-90s, meaning that it could go at any time. I'd like to have a plan in place for when it does. I've read a little about tankless water heating and it sounds great environmentally, but maybe not so great on the wallet (at least initially). I've got some questions for those better-educated on subject than I. [more inside]
Pilot light of one of the two water heaters installed side by side won't come on .... [more inside]
So we've started fixing up our condo a bit with an eye on selling it later this year. I managed to install a new dishwasher all by myself, and am feeling pretty good about it. Of course, a day later we notice that there's a puddle of water under our 18-year-old hot water heater, so I can't really rest on my laurels. More Inside! [more inside]
I was away from the house last night when I got a text from my wife about a strange "fertilizer" smell coming from the basement of our house. I came home a few hours later and smelled it immediately - hard to describe, but a slightly acrid, recognizable chlorine-y scent reminiscent of a garden center. It was noticeable on the first floor but stronger in the basement. I sniffed around for a while but couldn't locate an obvious source. The only thing I could find that was awry was that the pilot light had gone out in the water heater (only time that's happened), which is suggestive of a chimney backdraft. I relit the pilot without issue and verified that the water heater was venting correctly with a stick of Nag Champa. Multiple C02 detectors in the house detected nothing. We'll have an HVAC guy come out ASAP, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and whether I'm diagnosing the issue correctly. Is this what water heater fumes smell like? We've lived in the house for a year, and this is the first time it's happened. [more inside]
We have a hot water problem and I would love to have an idea of what the problem and solution is before wasting a bunch of money on a plumber. [more inside]
Our new-to-us-but-very-old home needs a new boiler (and water heater). What are our best options? [more inside]
The flashing around my chimney isn't doing its job, and I'm getting a little bit of water in my attic during very heavy rains. I'm in the process of getting bids to fix this. Both guys I've had out so far have noticed that the brick is deteriorating - one guy proposed repointing and the other guy thought that the chimney needed to be rebuilt from the roof up. But since the chimney only vents the boiler and the water heater, I got to thinking - should I seize this opportunity to replace these aging appliances with a combi boiler and do away with the chimney for good? I would like to use my house's water heater to fill a small outdoor soaking tub. Can I do this while the unit is running? [more inside]
Have any of you replaced your water heater yourself? Have any of you attempted to do so and failed, only to hire someone else to do it? Are any of you plumbers with opinions about a non-plumber's likelihood of success? Any thoughts on cost of professional installation vs. costs to purchase the necessary equipment? [more inside]
I got a water softener and when it goes into recharge mode it drains all the water from my water heater. This happens about once a week and it causes the water heater to try and fill. Of course as there is no water being provided this just means it is sucking air. The pulling of air is so violent that it shakes the intake pipes and creates a thundering racket. [more inside]
Hi there, My mom needs a new furnace & hot water heater. Both are super old and and need to be replaced. Both will be electric, she lives in a condo and doesn't have gas or propane. Can anyone recommend an electrician or HVAC company in the area? I'm checking our Sears and have a recommendation for Aire Serve from an acquaintance. Thanks!

My 50 gallon (electric) water heater is on the verge of complete breakdown & it's time for a new one. You'd think living in Arizona I'd know somebody with a solar water heater, but no. Are they efficient? How much more initial expense than a conventional unit? Thanks!
my new-ish gas-fired water heater has started to cut out after maybe 10 minutes use. if i close and re-open the tap it fires up again. it's pretty basic - a box on a wall with electronic ignition that runs off bottled gas (propane or butane, i suppose). can anyone explain why this happens (the 15kg gas cylinder is no longer new, but certainly not near empty)? thanks.
