My son is panicking about learning to swim. Help?

My kids are going to a day camp for the first time this summer. They're scheduled to swim twice a day, but my son has been refusing to go into the pool and panicking when the counselors try to encourage him into the water. How can we convince him the pool is fun, safe and comfortable? [more inside]

Oregon outdoors ideas needed for the weekend.

I've been procrastinating about finalizing my travel plans and now find the weekend looming and nothing planned. I've got Friday afternoon to Tuesday evening to start in Eugene (mid-state) to get anywhere in a 200 mile radius to have some fun. I love to mountain bike, be outdoors and get in the water. All else is optional. Not into campgrounds or crowds. The 4th is obviously a big weekend to travel. There's a lot to do here. What are some favorite places to get away and see some beauty away from it all. [more inside]

Best route to snorkeling for a poor swimmer

I'm not a very good swimmer. I can tread water, float on my back somewhat, and do a mediocre backstroke. But in a few months I'm going to Hawaii, and I'd like to have some fun snorkeling. What swimming skills should I focus on trying to learn? Should I start with learning finless swimming things first, such as the front crawl, or jump right into using fins and snorkel? [more inside]

Water Aerobics Instructional Videos?

I recently moved to Phoenix and am lucky enough to have a swimming pool in my backyard. It's perfect for water aerobics but not so much for swimming, as one end of the pool is much shallower than the other. I'm looking for good instructional water aerobics videos. Any suggestions? I haven't found much on the web so I'm ok with buying something if it's highly recommended.

Swimming Holes Near San Francisco

Are there any good swimming holes in the San Francisco Bay Area or nearby? (Let's say, within a three hour drive.) I'd love to find some fresh water to swim in -- lakes, rivers, streams, something like that. Thanks for any suggestions! (And feel free to Mefi-mail me if you don't want to tell everyone your secret spot.)

Getting water out of an ear?

We went swimming two days ago. My boyfriend still has water in his ear, and the Swim-EAR (95% isopropyl alcohol, 5% glycerin) we got at the drug store hasn't helped. Is this normal? And what can he do to make his ear feel better? [more inside]
