Water dissolving and water removing. There is water at the bottom of the ocean.

I have a perfectly spherical lead weight that weighs 1 kilogram. I drop it from the surface of the ocean directly into the Mariana Trench. How long does it take to hit the bottom, and how fast is it traveling when it hits? [more inside]

What interesting things can I be doing at the beach and marsh while it's too cold for the usual summer activities? Sciency, educational, artsy craftsy, exercise/activity...

What unique activities could I be doing at the beach and the marsh over time to take better advantage of both while it's too cold for swimming, sunning, and the usual beach activities? Educational things, amateur science experiments/measurements, artsy craftsy things, exercise other than jogging, etc. Let your imagination run wild. [more inside]

Best route to snorkeling for a poor swimmer

I'm not a very good swimmer. I can tread water, float on my back somewhat, and do a mediocre backstroke. But in a few months I'm going to Hawaii, and I'd like to have some fun snorkeling. What swimming skills should I focus on trying to learn? Should I start with learning finless swimming things first, such as the front crawl, or jump right into using fins and snorkel? [more inside]

Offsetting sea level rise: An engineering idea of Biblical proportions

The seas are rising. Climate change has made it inevitable. I have a strange question... Assuming that world sea-level rises by 1 metre over the next hundred years - Would it be possible to cordon off a section of land, somewhere in the centre of a continent, and flood it to create an artificial ocean, thus reducing the consequences of the sea rise? Drinking in International Waters/ Cruise Recommendations?

My sister and I want to take a cheap cruise over the summer. I'm 22, but she's 19. Are there cruise lines that let you drink at 19 in international waters? Also, does anyone have any recommendations for cheap-ish (doesn't have to be dirt cheap, just reasonable) and fun cruises?

Beach? Coast? Shore? Also: is Puget Sound part of the ocean?

Waterfilter (heh) — so, I have a couple of water-related questions born of a drunken debate among friends. First: what is the difference between a coast, a beach, and a shore? Second: is Puget Sound part of the Pacific Ocean, an entirely separate body, or some freakish combination of the two? Finally: when Seattleites go down to the Sound, are they going to the coast, the beach, the shore, or something else? [more inside]
