Would you go ahead with a trip to DC this coming week given the weather?

My family and I are set to travel by train to DC for a week of enrichment during our Mardi Gras break. The weather looks like it has the potential to close museums etc. and make us fairly uncomfortable for the significant walking from place to place. We could cancel it all and set out for something warmer tomorrow, but is my concern overblown? We're going tomorrow through Friday. The potential for closures and outages is the biggest factor, I guess.

Washington DC vacation

We are thinking of taking a family vacation to DC this spring. Our kids will be 12, 15, and 17. We haven't yet decided whether we'll drive or fly (from Boston). How many days would we need to see most of the main sites? Any suggestions for an itinerary? What about a good but not terribly pricey hotel (preferably where we can get 2 adjoining rooms and continental breakfast)? Other tips or resources? I've seen some previous questions about off-the-beaten-track attractions, but we would be very much ON the beaten track. :)

Half a weekday in DC

Hello D.C. Mefites. Later this month I'll have half a Monday to spend in D.C. The rest of the week I'm working until dinner time. I'm flying into Reagan around noon on a Monday. I'd like to cram as much Capital type stuff into the afternoon as I can. Any suggestions on what to do? A friend has suggested I rent a bike and cruise around the Mall, monuments, etc. Also, I run and would like to run two or three time the week I'm there. Any suggested multi-mile routes near the Pentagon or Crystal City area? I'm completely unfamiliar with the area, but would really like to avoid the hotel treadmill.

What D.C. activities on a need-to-know basis?

What off-the-beaten-path activities can I do in D.C.? I would love to do something that makes me feel a bit like a VIP. I want the city to seem like it does in a spy novel. Seeing the vintage Congressional bathrooms, getting a behind the scenes tour of the Library of Congress, and unusual sights like the Pentagon's gold AK-47 are the kind of things I'm after. Drive time: CT to DC?

How long would the drive from New Haven to Washington, D.C., take on Wednesday evening? I'm trying to decide how horrendous the experience will be so I can judge whether springing for Amtrack tickets would be worth it. We'll be leaving at about 6 from New Haven. Specific experiences with that drive or a similar one before Thanksgiving would be appreciated.

TravelFilter: Looking for things to see/do between Seattle, WA and Mansfield, MO.

Mum and I are going on a road trip in a week. We're starting from the Seattle area and the farthest point is Mansfield, MO. There we will see the last "Little House" of Laura Ingalls Wilder. We'll also be visiting DeSmet, SD to see the "Little Town on the Prairie". We're also going to see Mt. Rushmore which is also in South Dakota. Other than that, we have no definite plans. What is there to see and/or do between those two points? Any hotel/motel/B&B recommendations? [more inside]

What to do after all day on the Mall in DC in May?

My husband and I will be returning to DC, where we spent part of our honeymoon, for a 10th anniversary trip during the first week in May (May 1-May 7). I've seen these questions, which cover a lot, but we're also interested in events the locals might know about that we wouldn't hear about coming in from out out town. For location/travel purposes, we'll be staying at a hotel near the Foggy Bottom Metro stop and will not have a car. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Older Northwest Children's Travel Show

Growing up in Washington state in the 70’s and 80’s I watched a PBS show about a grandma that visited sites of interest (Columbia Gorge, White Bird Pass, etc.) in the Northwest with her grandchildren. Production quality, as I remember it, was rather crude. Does anyone else remember this show? What was the name? Thanks!

on the road again

In late May, I'll be driving with a bunch of friends in an RV from Sacramento CA to George WA and back for the Sasquatch Music Festival. I've only driven as far north as the Oregon border before, so I'm looking for recommendations of interesting places to stop - your favorite diners, pie shops, waterfalls, hot springs (improved or not) and other oddities of northwest highway culture. I'm familar with many Northern California hot springs (I really like the one in Sierraville), and would love to find other very inexpensive and informal places like that.
