My washing machine (a top-loading Maytag Centennial similar to
this one, about 3-5 years old, I'd guess) sporadically leaves clothes dripping wet after the whole cycle's done. Other times, it works perfectly and spins the load to a much more reasonable level of dampness.

We have a Whirlpool Duet washing machine (about 2 years old). The cycle is taking WAY too long to complete. The load that's running now should have been done in an hour and ten minutes, so far it's been an hour and a half and there's still 30 minutes left on the timer. No error codes, and it's doing stuff the entire time - the timer just isn't counting down. What gives?

I have an amazing old down comforter that reeks of a mixture of death and b.o. There are no washing instructions on it. How do I get this thing clean/smelling good? Caveat: It is massive, and my apt has a pretty old-school washing machine and dryer.

What should we use as shims to go under our new washing machine? Apparently Samsung does not manufacture legs long enough to level their machines on our basement floor, so we need to put something under it. What do you suggest for a stackable material that won't compress too much over time and won't shift under the vibration?

I just moved to Europe from the US and used a front loading washing machine. Both pairs of pants in the last load now have tears along the sides of the back pockets. Argh! What am I doing wrong, so I can fix it for my next load? What else is essential information for front loading washing machines? Anything I can do to salvage the pants?

daisyk and I have just moved into a spiffy new flat. Unfortunately, we can't figure out how to connect the washing machine drain. Our drain hose looks
this. There is a passage from the washing machine cubby leading to the cupboard under the sink, clearly meant for the drain hose. However, in the cupboard, we only have
this weird conical attachement. How do we mate the two without creating a mess?

Is it possible to get cologne smell out of clothing? I kind of "inherited" a half-dozen nice sweaters that reek of perfume, and I'm allergic as well. I've tried mucho baking soda and soaking in the wash machine; haven't tried vinegar yet; past (somewhat related) threads suggest
Ozium and
Synthrapol, but they're really not for this purpose.

I know that if a Chapstick goes through the wash, it will stain my clothes, but could identical stains be indicative of a washing machine malfunction? The stains in question look just like baby-oil stains, not grease or motor-oil. The research I've done so far suggests that a washing machine seal break or leak would result in a dirtier type stain, more grease-like. We don't use any kind of fabric softener or dryer sheets, so I've ruled those out. Thanks in advance!

Remember those egg-shaped handle-powered washing machines that were advertised on infomercials in the '90s? Has anyone actually used one? Did it actually work?
And in these electricity-conscious, water-saving times, has the concept of a human-powered hand-washing machine evolved into something a bit, well, less daggy?

The communal washing machines in my apartment building are worthless. They don't remove any sort of stain or spill, regardless of solubility or severity. When I remove the wet clothes from the washer, nasty stripes and splotches of lint cover my clothes (especially obvious on darks). Is there a specific complaint I can make to my landlord, or should I just give up and go to a laundromat?

My washing machine's spin and dry cycles shake the whole house. The neighbours have now complained. Does anyone have any good ideas or experience of damping vibration, particularly in the case of a washing machine? I was thinking of putting a blanket under the machine but I'm not sure how effective that will be. Suggestions welcome!

It seems like at least once a year my washing machine starts leaking where the hot and cold water hoses screw into the back of the machine. This time it leaked for at least a few days before I caught it, leaving water spots on the ceiling downstairs. I usually take the hoses off and replace the washers in the ends of the hose. Anyone have any better ideas or is there anything I can do so they never leak again?
