Ethics: Getting Rid of a Defective Used Car

I bought a late-model used car last year which appears to be defective in one or more ways which are covered under the manufacturer's warranty, but which I am unable to get the manufacturer to fix. Is there any way that I can get rid of the car for a reasonable price without being a huge jerk? [more inside]

Gray lie on warranty?

So I bought a new small kitchen appliance that I'm very happy with in mid-December. It comes with a great 10 year warranty, which is a big part of the reason I selected this rather than another unit. Apparently I was supposed to register it within 10 days of purchase. I did not even realize I had to do this until today, when I was reading some Amazon reviews for it and someone mentioned the 10 day policy. Am I screwed on this, or can I just lie and said I just bought it/it was a gift that I just received? [more inside]

Warranty claim rejected: this is a commercial product, not for home use

I bought a microwave off Amazon that quit working most of the time after seven months' use. Attempted to make a warranty claim but the manufacturer says "this is a commercial unit and is not covered for home use". How do I approach getting warranty service or was it just a bad idea to buy a commercial micro? [more inside]

Mid-2012 MacBook Air SSD got corrupted, is it one of the "bad ones"?

Yesterday my mid-2012 MacBook Air got the dreaded flashing question mark and "drive not found" text upon startup. Fortunately, I had a Time Machine backup, and I was able to get the computer running (for now - knock on wood). When I was researching the problem, I noticed that this generation of MacBook Air has issues with its SSD, and Apple will replace the drive at no charge within three years of purchase. To diagnose the issue, Apple's website says, you must install the "Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1" from the App Store. Problem is, that update isn't there anymore... [more inside]

This is possibly the most boring thing I've ever asked.

Last year we bought a set of appliances (fridge, dishwasher, stove) from Whirlpool and they've sent us a warranty renewal notice. Best as I can tell, the offer is coming from Whirlpool directly (they have our info on file as we got a manufacturer's rebate.) Can you school me on what the deal with appliance warranties is? How likely is it that I've voided my warranty?

I bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone a year and a half ago. The screen stopped working today (not due to an accident or any other trauma) and Samsung are sending me a return envelope to get it repaired. However, I had the screen replaced by a third party after smashing it last Christmas. It was replaced with a Samsung part. Does this mean my warranty is void? [more inside]

Should I ask Ting Inc. for a new phone?

I just got a refurbished Nexus S from Ting (I would link to the phone, but they're not selling it right now). Honestly, it's been great, except that twice now the phone just turned off and wouldn't turn back on. Then, in a few hours (like 12-16 hours), it does turn on and pretends like nothing happened. This causes me anxiety. I'm still under warranty for another week or so; should I ask for a new phone? I did try a few things, which are listed below. [more inside]

Accidentally drove 20,000 miles without changing the oil... Now what?

I bought a new Kia Sorento in July of 2012. I then stupidly put 20,000 miles on the car without a single oil change. The car is now burning oil at a rate of roughly 1 quart every 300 miles, so I know I broke something (my dad's theory is a damaged ring; roughly a $5k repair for engine rebuild). The car came with a great warranty: 3 yr/36k mile bumper-to-bumper, and 10 yr/100k mile power-train. Unfortunately, I have voided that warranty by not preforming the most basic maintenance. So, I'm not sure what to do now. Options I see are: -Take it to the dealer for repair and hope they don't ask/notice/care what I've done. -Take it to the dealer and confess my complete ineptitude. -Go to a random auto shop for repair (another act that will void my warranty). Van warranty dilemma

On march 11, about two and a half weeks ago, I bought my dad's van. 2008 town and country. Thursday morning, it wouldn't start. It might be dead. The mechanic is still working on diagnosing the problem, but he's not getting compression on two cylinders. Anyway, the van had a lifetime non-transferable power train warranty, so if had broken on march 10th, Chrysler would have covered it. Is there any way to void the sale and get the warranty back? Final pre-purchase car questions!

Continuing my car questions (1, 2, 3). We’re buying a gently used Forester. Two questions I need to resolve before picking up the car: should I finance any part of the purchase (can pay all cash), and should I pay to extend the bumper-to-bumper warranty to seven years? [more inside]

I did something really, really stupid. Now what?

I have a receipt (stating the model number) for a malfunctioning freezer which WOULD still be under warranty, had I not unknowingly removed the serial number upon it's arrival. That's just how brilliant I am. Is there any way to get Whirlpool to honor the warranty anyway? Or at least a way to get a repairman to fix it on my dime? So far no one will touch it and I don't know what to do. [more inside]

Looking for retailers with lifetime guarantee / warranty

I'm a huge fan of retailers who have lifetime guarantees or warranties. I'm trying to make an effort to buy more from these places. The retailers that I've enjoyed with these features include REI, Eddie Bauer, The North Face, Eastpak, Jansport and Koss headphones. Are there any more I should be aware of? I've heard about Briggs & Riley suitcases and Craftsman tools. Please let me know of any others and of your favorites.

A Good Major Appliance Warranty?

Has anyone used a warranty like SquareTrade for a major appliance (e.g., gas range) repair? I'm thinking of buying an extended warranty because my new appliances seem to be prone to breaking down, and I would guess a third-party warranty might be better than an extended manufacturer warranty.

Does it make sense to buy a warranty on a pre-owned Honda Civic Hybrid?

Asking for a friend. "Jan" is buying a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid, it has 60,000 miles on it now. The dealer is offering a warranty on said car, 6 years or 60,000 miles, for $1600. She is set on the car, but can't decide on the warranty. She has just ended one sided needy relationship with a narcissistic Mercedes with never ending issues. This recent experience is clouding her decision and I suggested turning to mefites. thank you!
