Warm jacket suggestions

Good warm jacket suggestions I am in the market for a warm jacket (womens) for a very cold weather (-15F). This is for daily wear. Currently looking at Landsend but frankly have my doubts about it. Hopefully not too bulky (not a big fan of Down) Any and all suggestions would be welcome. Any links to sale items would be great too, thank you

Listing the details below--

-Warm jacket for -15F weather
-no down material
-not too bulky
-with a hood (really would prefer that)
-waterproof as I live in a city with a lot of rain

Best spot for a mid-January mosquito-less vacation?

Where should we spend our vacation days in mid-January? Hi, we have about a week of vacation to use in mid-January (originating in the Boston area.) Any suggestions?

It has to be cheap-ish (so no African safaris, unfortunately.) We've not been adventurous travelers before, but are up for some adventure. Warm would be awesome, and I like beaches, but beach-less is OK too. Our thoughts so far have been Rio (assuming can get a reasonable flight) and Big Sur, but I'm having a hard time thinking outside the box.

(I really want to go to Belize, but mosquitos attack me like no one else, so I'd like to avoid this problem, if possible.)

Open and grateful to any ideas!

a suit made of kitten fur

Most best soft warm fleece pajamas: where are they? I've had my current main winter pajamas in the rotation for a few years now. When I first got them they were the most best soft warm fleece pajamas, they are now a bit pill-y and not near as snuggly. With the gifting season upon us, I'd like some options to toss up on my Amazon wish list.

Specifics: Warm. I get cold easily. Two-piece, knit and not woven (no woven flannel). Ideally will feel like you are living inside a suit made of clouds and baby kittens (except no claws and scratchy tongues).

Tell me why my foot may be warm

I feel like someone is holding a heating pad to the bottom of my right foot. What the hell? You are not my doctor, I will be talking to my doctor, disclaimer, proviso, caveat emptor, etc.

The bottom of my right foot is warm. From the inside, not to the touch. It doesn't hurt, it doesn't tingle, it's not numb, it's just warm, like it is pressed against a heating pad or hot water bottle. It's just the bottom of my right foot, which in all other respects is identical to my left. It's not uncomfortable, but definitely has my attention.

Other people experience this, I'm sure. Any thoughts or explanations for why this happens?

How to stay warm outside but cool inside?

Practically and stylishly dressed men of Metafilter (and those who shop for them): how do you stay warm outside and cool inside in winter? Autumn is coming and there is a chill in the air so I've started dressing a bit warmer and have encountered a problem which has dogged me every winter - how to dress so that I'm warm enough outside but cool enough when I go inside into the warmth.

The problem is above the waist. I generally wear a sort of vest/t-shirt thing tucked into my trousers to prevent draughts. Over that I'll have a jumper/pullover/hoodie. This is great for keeping me warm outside (in conjunction with jacket etc.) but when I go indoors where the heating is on I'm instantly too hot. I can't take the jumper off if I'm somewhere public because what I'm wearing underneath is basically underwear.

Fashion is not my strong suit so I'm hoping there is a really obvious solution to this problem which I haven't thought of yet.

(I have considered carrying a change of clothes around with me but that seems like a lot of hassle)

intimate human connections

Where are my people? I recently attended a couple of AA meetings (Australia) and was struck by the openness, honesty, kindness, eloquence, reflectiveness of the members - maybe even (and this is difficult for this atheist to quantify) spirituality. Being Australia, there was very little overt religion.

Then I read some Kris Radish books: The Sunday List of Dreams, Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn, and the Elegant Gathering of White Snows. In the Sunday List of Dreams, the main character goes to a Women's Festival, which reminded me in a lot of ways of the AA meetings I've been to.

So tell me, where as a mid 40s single woman can go that has these aspects - welcoming, friendly, non-combatitive, open, expressive, event/meeting/group that is not connected to religion specifically and allows for all kinds of beliefs? I don't want to be forced into doing things that I may not enjoy (so rules have to be flexible). For example, maybe there's a nudist camp that is just right, but I want to be able to choose whether or not to disrobe.

Obviously, I would like something local (South East Queensland) but I am also interested in travel, and if there's some event somewhere in the world I shouldn't miss, please list it.

(FYI no church of universalists in this area and Mefi meetups are great, but I would like something a little deeper and more connected than this).

If it occurs to you that my question is too narrow (not because of Askme regulations, but because I haven't considered something else) please feel free to suggest things out of the scope, but also please explain why you've included them.

Help me find hot creamy winter recipes

It's getting towards the depths of winter, ski season has begun, and I find myself wanting to eat nothing but melted cheese, with buckets of hot caramel sauce for dessert. Can you help me find slightly less decadent recipes with the same mouthfeel? I'm basically looking for hot and creamy, preferably savoury rather than sweet (I'm actually trying not to eat sugar at the moment, but I'm cool with fruit-based things). I don't want to substitute with frankeningredients. And I'd prefer that I can eat a large bowl full of whatever the recipe is without the sort of gastro-intestinal consequences eating a bowl of melted cheese might have.

I'm a pretty competent cook, not averse to complicated recipes, and have no allergies or other dietary restrictions other than avoiding sugar as much as possible. (The gallstone thing that people might remember from a previous question has sorted itself out.) I don't have many kitchen appliances, so if it needs a food processor or heavy duty blender, it's probably out. (I have a stick blender for soups).

So far I have:
mashed potato/purees of other vegetables
thick stews of various sorts
creamed frozen spinach with butter or sesame oil
poached eggs (the yolks are doing it for me), esp on rice or in miso soup
custard
porridge

Can you help us find the anti-Seattle?

Say you have 5 days, $1000 for flight+hotel (+maybe car rental) and you want to get out of rainy Seattle to somewhere warm and relaxing. Where do you go? We (my girlfriend and I) find ourselves with the unexpected luxury of 5 days off (3/30-4/3) and an intense desire to escape rainy, cold Seattle. Simply put, we are both in very bad need of a vacation. We are looking for some trip ideas to warm, hopefully sunny locales where we can relax and recharge a bit.

We have approximately $1000 (we could go *maybe* $1100-1200 if the destination was especially spectacular and/or accommodations were a bit fancier) for flight + hotel. We'd also like the option of being able to rent a car within that price range if the destination requires it but that just depends on the destination.

What we'd like to do: relax, get some sun, walk/drive around, explore local sites and landmarks, and eat some tasty food. We're not big outdoorsy people, but we enjoy the beauty of nature and love to walk.

Vegas is the obvious choice here and we've checked it out on Expedia a bit (the flight+hotel+car packages) and there are some options in that price range. Neither of us are completely sold on going to Vegas (we've both been before) but it remains an option I suppose. Ideally, I think we'd really like to visit a new place that's outside of our Northwest comfort zone and can offer a new experience.

Do you have any trip ideas? Is this a pipe dream to think we can find such a trip given this short timeframe and budget? Hopefully not, but we'd love to hear any and all of your thoughts, advice, recommendations, etc. Thanks Mefites!

Brrrrrrrrrrr-illiant gift ideas needed!

Gift ideas for someone who is moving from somewhere very warm to somewhere very cold. My sister is moving from someplace where it is nice and warm year-round to someplace with cold, snowy winters. For Christmas this year, we want to get her a number of small gifts that will help keep her warm in January. So far, we've got some hand-knit mittens and a hot water bottle with a fun cover, but we're looking for more ideas. I think we're leaning towards a bunch of small gifts that can be put together, but something bigger (so long as it isn't too extravagant) might be possible too. Our budget is around, say $50.

If I could find my passport, I'd be in the Bahamas by now...

Winter beach getaway for the desperate New Englander without a passport? Okay. It snowed again today here in Boston and I've had it up to here with winter. Between work, life changes, and this damn weather, for the first time in my life, I now understand why people would want to go do nothing for a few days on a beach, and damn it, I've earned this. I've checked out this, but I'm kind of looking for the inherently less kid-friendly version. Specifically, all I want is to:

- be able to lie on a beach that's warm enough for a bikini
- read my trashy fantasy novels in relative peace
- and drink Old Fashioneds (MA has this crazy no-open-container-on-beaches thing and I'd like to find somewhere that doesn't)
- not have to worry about having to drive around town looking for food because hey, I'll be drinking!
- Keep it under 250$ a night? (I'm hoping to take advantage of last minute deals, if I can find any.) I could go up to maybe 400$ a night if I can con a friend into joining me, though.
- Trying to avoid immediate Miami-area if possible - my folks are there, and don't understand that visiting them != vacation or relaxing!
- Somewhere I can go ASAP, preferably by mid-April. I'm not limited to weekend travel - I could do a few weekdays instead if that makes it way more affordable/realistic.

If I could find my passport, I'd be in the Bahamas by now. I've dug around and can't find many all-inclusive resorts in the US except for this and it's a little spendier and difficult to get to (far from an airport) than I'd like. And my only impression of Club Med is from lots of kid-friendly commercials, so I'm guessing it's not my style?

Seriously, you'll be my hero if you can suggest something. Anything!

Warmest Hat Ever?

Warmest Hat in the Multiverse? I'm one of those people who are constantly cold. I'm sure you're heard that "you lose 70% of your body heat through your head," or something similar.

I'm looking for the absolute warmest hat in the world. I ain't talking 'bout them flimsy lil' fleece hats. Tried 'em - hate 'em.

Hats I'm considering - found through a cursory google search ("warmest hat") include the Astrakhan and the Technical Advantage Gear Windblocking Arctic Thermal Hat (used in the Iditarod, according to their webpage).

My only restriction: NO REAL FUR, for ethical reasons.
Uses for a warm stove top?

Uses for a permanently warm stove top? How can I make use of a permanently warm stove top? I'm renting and my small stove has two pilot lights. A pot of water left on the stove top for a few hours reaches and remains at 100 F / 38 C.
It seems a waste not to use it for something. What plants, foods or other process could benefit from being that warm all the time? (It's fairly dark so it's not ideal for plants unless they can cope without much light -- mushrooms?)

Cold Feet

I have cold feet. Literally. Due to circulatory issues and neuropathy, I have chronically painful cold feet. This winter has been particularly bad. I need to find some sort of foot warming solution, an thought I'd ask the hive mind while I'm at it: What do you do? Do you have favorite footwear? Some mysterious socks that work well?

I have a mental image of some sort of soft furry Mukluk overshoe that seems like it would be nice and warm, but I don't know where to find such a thing, if it exists at all. Anyone know of something like that?

These boots were made for...

I need some new boots. I need some boots that will keep me warm and dry in extended periods of standing around outside, all night long on concrete. I would like them to be warm and durable, I want the best! I work in the film business and often am called to stand around in the cold, dark, damp of night. Sometimes it is raining, sometimes we make rain. Sometimes it is snowing, sometimes we make snow. I have worked at temperatures well below zero for hours at a time.

I have many items of footwear, and feel pretty happy with each one, but the cold weather boot has eluded me for my entire career. I even have a pair of Northern Outfitters moon boots rated to -50 below zero (no support and absurd looking)

I had a pair of Columbia boots that I was pretty happy with, but they just expired, so I am looking for a new boot.
I have been told time and time again that Danner makes the best boot int he world. I wanted to know what MeFi thinks?

Or I could just hibernate

Please help me keep warm at home! The single-glazed flat I live in is rubbish at keeping heat in and has a funny timed heating system which kicks in about 2-3am and goes on all night; but you can't switch it on before that. So that means that the flat is absolutely FREEZING in the evenings before the heating kicks in.

What are some cheap ways of keeping warm that would be effective immediately? I don't mean structural changes to the flat which would be more a medium-to-long term solution. I just mean simple tricks to stay warm. Right now, I wear multiple-layers of clothing and take really hot showers. Does the hivemind have any other tips that don't involve spending money?

Slippers!

My slippers are soon to thrown out with the rubbish, but before I rush out and buy some new ones I have few requirements. They need to be warm, comfy and not kill me when I'm walking downstairs. Also they should have some grip on the sole so I can safely walk in the garden without slipping when it's wet.

P.S. I'll accept all recommendations (however wacky) so if you think slipper socks (e.g.) are what I need let me know.

I want something to put at the foot of my bed to keep feet warm - a throw would work, but something more designed for the purpose perhaps- like a giant "sock" that slips over the end of the comforter that you slip your feet into or something like that. down or equivalent preferable, but post whatever you have!

Where to get fresh-baked (artisan?) bread near Menlo Park, CA?

Where to buy fresh baked (artisan?) bread in the Menlo Park, CA area? For as long as I can remember, I've really liked fresh baked bread. I'm trying to find somewhere where I can get bread as close to the point of having just been baked as possible. (I'm a little too lazy to bake it myself at the moment, as this previous ask.mefi discusses.) Ideally, this would be a place that bakes bread all day and I could just drop in and buy a loaf (or a boule or whatever).

Complicating my quest is that there seem to be different types of bakeries, and most of the bakeries around here seem focused on selling cupcakes and the like. Is there a special name for a bread bakery, or special resources for finding them?

California also seems to have some sort of "artisan bread" movement, but I can only seem to find big artisan bread wholesalers (which is what Acme Bread seems to mostly be, unless I go up to the city). By the time I get, say, Acme Bread at my local supermarket it seems a bit old (though maybe I'm going at the wrong times). My favourite place to get fresh baked bread on the east coast calls itself an "artisan bakery" and seems to specialise only in bread, so maybe this is the right direction?

Any suggestions for specific locations or where/how to look would be most appreciated!

Someplace warm

What warm, relaxing, beach destination (probably in Europe) do you recommend that will be easily accessible from Dublin via RyanAir (or other low-cost carrier) this coming September? Honeymooning in Ireland for a month, but we wouldn't mind jutting off to a warmer locale for a few days if the price is right. What do you suggest?

Jackets for Tall Guys Please

How do I find a warm jacket to fit me, a tall and skinny 21-year-old male? I've always had a lot of trouble finding jackets that fit my form. I'm tall with a long back and long arms, and when looking for coats and jackets anything that fits my torso (ie. is 'skinny' enough) won't be long enough for my torso or my arms, and anything that is long enough for my torso and arms, I feel like I'm swimming in.

I'm not really a fan of long jackets or 'pea coats' and usually look for something more along the lines of a bomber style. No leather though please.

I really liked the look of the jackets H&M had recently - bomber-ish style with lots of pockets. The problem was that I couldn't find one the fit my long back and long arms. Any ideas where I could find something like that, except for a taller guy?

SUN !

does anyone know any art schools in america that are in warmer climes ? i'm basically looking for art schools in the us that are in the south - california, texas, arizona, florida - i dont mind as long as its somewhere that is warm all the year round , offers a graduate program in photography and even has the odd scholarship or two.
A search reveals not much except something called the art institute which seems to be like a kind of starbucks type thing. So i'm thinking someone might know a bit better.

What is the nature of my headaches?

I get headaches that start at the base of the back of my head, then seem to radiate over my brow. Warm compresses almost always help.
What is the likely cause of this? I've had this situation since I was a kid, off and on in varying degrees of intensity/re-occurence. I'm trying to determine if it's muscle based, sinus, stress, chemical, etc. The thought that a warm compress almost always helps I find curious and indicative of "something", but "what"?

There once was a time it was so bad that I wouldn't go out of town unless I knew the hotel room I was staying in had a microwave so I could heat up a moist towel....

It's NOT just a Sweatshirt, It's a Lifestyle

Please help me find alternatives to my favorite sweatshirt/t-shirt maker - Nation Ltd! I have a sweatshirt (see a pic of a similar one, but lighter grey color, here) made by Nation Ltd. When I bought it, it was somewhat of an impulse buy - I really don't normally buy sweatshirts that cost about $65.

The owner of the store said something like "People never want to take these off!" - which I dismissed as regular shopkeeper talk. Since I bought the damn thing, though, she's proved herself right - it's like a sweatshirt succubus. I want to wear it every day, and sometimes I sleep in it. It just gets cozier and cozier, and doesn't wear out, despite many washings. I was able to restrain myself more in the Fall, but now that it's Winter, my cocooning instinct is taking over.

Now to my problem - Nation Ltd. is having a holiday sale, great - but all the stuff that I wanted to buy is sold out. They must be making room for their Spring line. I checked eBay and other merchants - nada.

What sweatshirts of a similar style have you found absolutely comfortable?

Things I like about this one:

- long sleeves (I'm tall)
- long torso (doesn't cover the butt, just enough to avoid "wind gaps")
- thin material, but warm
- sturdy construction
- fitted, but not tight

I'm OK with guy sweatshirts, too, should they have something that's comparable.

Note: I swear, I have no connection with Nation Ltd, and will get no discounts or merchandise by posting this!
