Or I could just hibernate

Please help me keep warm at home! The single-glazed flat I live in is rubbish at keeping heat in and has a funny timed heating system which kicks in about 2-3am and goes on all night; but you can't switch it on before that. So that means that the flat is absolutely FREEZING in the evenings before the heating kicks in.

What are some cheap ways of keeping warm that would be effective immediately? I don't mean structural changes to the flat which would be more a medium-to-long term solution. I just mean simple tricks to stay warm. Right now, I wear multiple-layers of clothing and take really hot showers. Does the hivemind have any other tips that don't involve spending money?

Slippers!

My slippers are soon to thrown out with the rubbish, but before I rush out and buy some new ones I have few requirements. They need to be warm, comfy and not kill me when I'm walking downstairs. Also they should have some grip on the sole so I can safely walk in the garden without slipping when it's wet.

P.S. I'll accept all recommendations (however wacky) so if you think slipper socks (e.g.) are what I need let me know.

I want something to put at the foot of my bed to keep feet warm - a throw would work, but something more designed for the purpose perhaps- like a giant "sock" that slips over the end of the comforter that you slip your feet into or something like that. down or equivalent preferable, but post whatever you have!

Where to get fresh-baked (artisan?) bread near Menlo Park, CA?

Where to buy fresh baked (artisan?) bread in the Menlo Park, CA area? For as long as I can remember, I've really liked fresh baked bread. I'm trying to find somewhere where I can get bread as close to the point of having just been baked as possible. (I'm a little too lazy to bake it myself at the moment, as this previous ask.mefi discusses.) Ideally, this would be a place that bakes bread all day and I could just drop in and buy a loaf (or a boule or whatever).

Complicating my quest is that there seem to be different types of bakeries, and most of the bakeries around here seem focused on selling cupcakes and the like. Is there a special name for a bread bakery, or special resources for finding them?

California also seems to have some sort of "artisan bread" movement, but I can only seem to find big artisan bread wholesalers (which is what Acme Bread seems to mostly be, unless I go up to the city). By the time I get, say, Acme Bread at my local supermarket it seems a bit old (though maybe I'm going at the wrong times). My favourite place to get fresh baked bread on the east coast calls itself an "artisan bakery" and seems to specialise only in bread, so maybe this is the right direction?

Any suggestions for specific locations or where/how to look would be most appreciated!

Someplace warm

What warm, relaxing, beach destination (probably in Europe) do you recommend that will be easily accessible from Dublin via RyanAir (or other low-cost carrier) this coming September? Honeymooning in Ireland for a month, but we wouldn't mind jutting off to a warmer locale for a few days if the price is right. What do you suggest?

Jackets for Tall Guys Please

How do I find a warm jacket to fit me, a tall and skinny 21-year-old male? I've always had a lot of trouble finding jackets that fit my form. I'm tall with a long back and long arms, and when looking for coats and jackets anything that fits my torso (ie. is 'skinny' enough) won't be long enough for my torso or my arms, and anything that is long enough for my torso and arms, I feel like I'm swimming in.

I'm not really a fan of long jackets or 'pea coats' and usually look for something more along the lines of a bomber style. No leather though please.

I really liked the look of the jackets H&M had recently - bomber-ish style with lots of pockets. The problem was that I couldn't find one the fit my long back and long arms. Any ideas where I could find something like that, except for a taller guy?

SUN !

does anyone know any art schools in america that are in warmer climes ? i'm basically looking for art schools in the us that are in the south - california, texas, arizona, florida - i dont mind as long as its somewhere that is warm all the year round , offers a graduate program in photography and even has the odd scholarship or two.
A search reveals not much except something called the art institute which seems to be like a kind of starbucks type thing. So i'm thinking someone might know a bit better.

What is the nature of my headaches?

I get headaches that start at the base of the back of my head, then seem to radiate over my brow. Warm compresses almost always help.
What is the likely cause of this? I've had this situation since I was a kid, off and on in varying degrees of intensity/re-occurence. I'm trying to determine if it's muscle based, sinus, stress, chemical, etc. The thought that a warm compress almost always helps I find curious and indicative of "something", but "what"?

There once was a time it was so bad that I wouldn't go out of town unless I knew the hotel room I was staying in had a microwave so I could heat up a moist towel....

It's NOT just a Sweatshirt, It's a Lifestyle

Please help me find alternatives to my favorite sweatshirt/t-shirt maker - Nation Ltd! I have a sweatshirt (see a pic of a similar one, but lighter grey color, here) made by Nation Ltd. When I bought it, it was somewhat of an impulse buy - I really don't normally buy sweatshirts that cost about $65.

The owner of the store said something like "People never want to take these off!" - which I dismissed as regular shopkeeper talk. Since I bought the damn thing, though, she's proved herself right - it's like a sweatshirt succubus. I want to wear it every day, and sometimes I sleep in it. It just gets cozier and cozier, and doesn't wear out, despite many washings. I was able to restrain myself more in the Fall, but now that it's Winter, my cocooning instinct is taking over.

Now to my problem - Nation Ltd. is having a holiday sale, great - but all the stuff that I wanted to buy is sold out. They must be making room for their Spring line. I checked eBay and other merchants - nada.

What sweatshirts of a similar style have you found absolutely comfortable?

Things I like about this one:

- long sleeves (I'm tall)
- long torso (doesn't cover the butt, just enough to avoid "wind gaps")
- thin material, but warm
- sturdy construction
- fitted, but not tight

I'm OK with guy sweatshirts, too, should they have something that's comparable.

Note: I swear, I have no connection with Nation Ltd, and will get no discounts or merchandise by posting this!

Turn my Christmas from bummer to summer!

Can you help me figure out how to use my 8 day Christmas Vacation to get somewhere warm and have a ton of fun? Hey, sorry about how open ended this question is! I'm just wide open to suggestions, and I need to do something!

Short Version:
I am an outgoing single 26 year old male and I have December 20-28th to go on a crazy adventure. I live in Raleigh, NC. I want to go somewhere warm. Budget is $500 (not including gas). My priorities are to meet new people, build new memories, and have a lot of fun. If you were me, where would you go?

Long Version:
So... I try to go on random trips and have adventures whenever possible. Well, this Christmas I have 8 days off work and no where to be. Originally I was going to visit some friends in California but that fell through-- so I've got the time to myself and I want to have some fun!

My ideal trip would be road tripping down the Florida coast and maybe ending up in Key West, visiting awesome cities along the way. I like camping out and I've never minded sleeping in my car. I'd love to attend any special events where there are lots of 21-30 year olds. I'm all about meeting new people, going out and having fun, maybe doing something good for society along the way, and creating as many memories as possible.

An alternate idea would be to fly to the Bahamas or St. Thomas if there was anything special going on that wasn't quite so family/older folk oriented. A cheap cruise would be really fun... if it actually had lots of twenty-somethings on it as opposed to retirees/families...

The whole holiday aspect of this trip is kind of a bummer but I gotta work with what I've got.

Does anyone have any suggestions for stops, events, etc along the way?

Overweight --> Warm --> More Sweat?

I will losing weight and getting healthy make me sweat less? Details inside. Background About Me:

I am a mid-20s male on the border between 'normal' and 'overweight' according to BMI (recently leaning more on the overweight side). I feel reasonable healthy but I do have a small gut. I run 1-2 times a week for 3 miles and eat semi-healthy (not great, but no fast food).

The Problem:

I sweat... alot. Even a semi-brisk walk turns my t-shirt into a damp towel. My oversweating is a major annoyance in my life and makes getting dressed up (which for men means wearing warmer clothes) a major hassle. I have to change my bed sheets every week because I sweat in the night.

My SO always mentions how warm I am all the time and I wonder if it is all related: Overweight --> Warm --> More Sweat.

If I lost weight, would I sweat less? I HATE my sweating problem and if losing weight meant I would sweat less, I would start this instant.

Moving to a much colder climate - any advice??

My question dear MeFites is... do you have any advice for me to help make the transition from very hot to very cold temps. comfortably and cost-effectively?
I may soon be moving from Brisbane, Australia, which has very mild winters (20 degrees celcius / 68 degrees fahrenheit) and *very* hot and humid summers, to north Tasmania which is meant to be COLD!

On average I'm looking at a comparative 20 degree celcius (65 d FH) drop in temperature all year round.

My question then dear MeFites is... do you have any advice for me to help make the transition from very hot to very cold temps. comfortably and cost-effectively? Things I particularly need help with are...

- What sort of fabric should I be looking for in a winter coat to keep me toasty warm and dry?

- How does one make their warddrobe work in a new cold climate without having to buy everything all over again (I'm thinking high-altitude thermals under everything?)

- What kinds of things can I do in a rental property to keep the house warm and our electricity bills down?

- Do you have any recommendations for cost-effective and preferrably eco-friendly heating options; the kind of thing that could be left on all day in a small room?

Anything else?? Any and all advice would be very much appreciated :)!

Thank you!

Cozy sweaters in NYC.

Where can I buy a cozy warm/large/high quality/handmade old style wool/cotton sweater (not stylized or gender specific) in NYC? I am looking for a nice colored (no patterns, I can't stand them) sweater (purple, brown, or maybe green). Is there a custom sweater shop somewhere I don't know about?
If you can name somewhere in lower manhattan you get a virtual hug. Hugs also for unoverpricedness (not to sacrifice quality though!).

When packing for two seasons, how can I avoid airline baggage fees on size and weight? In a few weeks, I am flying (Delta Airlines) to an area that will have chilly autumn mornings followed by very warm desert afternoons. As a result, I will have different clothing requirements depending upon time of day. I will be packing for two seasons. The trip duration is six days and I will have no access to laundry facilities. To avoid extra airline baggage fees, I want to keep size and weight to a minimum.

What are your suggestions for what I should take and what I should leave at home, as well as any useful packing techniques? Thanks as always for your assistance.

Where should I look to find a last-minute warm weather getaway on the (relatively) cheap for this weekend? A friend and I have had it up to here with the Northeastern US and want to go somewhere warm with a beach this wekeend (Fri-Sun). We hope to pay $500/person for flight & hotel if possible for three nights. Any ideas? We've checked LastMinute.com but I'm wondering if there are better sites that I might not know about. Thanks!

Where's the best place in Chicago to sit in front of a nice fire and sip drinks? Boy and I are planning a weekend in Chicago next month where we'll play at being tourists and do all the stuff we never get to do when visiting friends and family. We'll try to get a nice hotel through Priceline and stay somewhere near either Water Tower Place or Grant Park. I'll be combing the other Chicago threads for fun things to do, but one thing that I didn't find that would be especially nice is where to go if we want to sit in front of a warm fire. This could include hotels/B&Bs with fireplaces in the rooms, restaurants, bars, hotel lobbies, whatever. Where would you go in Chicago if you wanted to toast your toes and relax with a drink? The only event we have planned so far is the Magnetic Fields show at the Old Town School of Folk Music on the 15th, and we're willing to go anywhere in town, although accessible by El is better.

Waking up too hot but not sweaty

What do I call this symptom- waking up too hot? I've had the problem over the past few months of waking up burning hot. I'm not looking for medical suggestions, just wanting to know what I would refer to this symptom as, or if there's a better way to put it. When I Google or search on sites like WebMD for "wake up too hot," or "wake up too warm," or "wake up burning," etc, nothing comes up.

It's not a night-sweat because I'm not excessively sweaty when I wake up, esp. considering how hot I am when I wake up. I usually wake up 1-2 hours earlier than normal and have to turn down the heat even more, or turn up the fan, take off covers, etc. I sleep in little, got a thinner blanket, use a fan, etc. Boyfriend sleeps in same bed and is fine even in pants and a shirt.

Beans! I want to make a microwavable beanbag, something that I can nuke for 30 seconds or so and wrap warm around my neck - but I don't want to use beans. I've seen the handmade ones with cherry pits, aduki beans, pearl barley, etc, but I'd like to make one that won't attract bugs or mold. Is there a synthetic equivalent I can use?

Need a pair of comfy & warn shoes.

Can you help me find warm and comfortable shoes? No huge snow shoes, please. I'm tired of my feet freezing on Minnesota mornings with my non-insulated shoes. I already have a pair of rock-solid snow shoes, but gawd are they uncomfortable and I only wear them when we have some real snowfall. I prefer leather shoes that look decent, but don't need to be dress shoes. FWIW, I'm generally a fan of Rockports and Timberlands, but their "normal" shoes don't keep my feet warm at all.

I ask here because it's really hard to tell if shoes will keep the frostbite away while trying them on in the store! So, any suggestions on good, comfortable warm shoes that won't fall apart? I tend to spring for shoes that last and I haven't thrown out a pair of non-athletic shoes in 5+ years, so don't worry about price.

Warm tights in tan?

Where can I find extremely warm tights for outdoor wear? In tan? My daughter wears a band uniform with a skirt. It's getting cold (it can get down to the low 20s at night in the late fall around here), and she needs tights - but they have to be tan-colored. My original thought was to get her some Under Armour type of thing, but I can't seem to find anything like that in tan. Does anyone know of a brand/type that she can wear that's available in that color? I was thinking that if there's nothing available, she could layer tan tights over white Under Armour as a last resort.

Compression Shirts: What are they for?

What is (/the original purpose of) a compression shirt? A local store has long-sleeved compression shirts on sale cheap and I've been looking for a cozy-n-toasty shirt for wearing like an undershirt in the winter that isn't longjohn/thermo material.

How do i keep my bed room warm and fresh at the same time? In the summer i keep my window open for hours at a time but im looking for a solution for the winter that wont sacrifice warmth. Im aware of freshening sprays or whatever theyre called but the ones ive tried just didnt do it for me. It seems theyre all suited for large living rooms etc so id like an alternative.

Where can I buy this celebrity NorthFace jacket? My wife always sees this jacket on celebrities and really wants it to be warm in the winter. I've looked all over the internet and NorthFace stores but can't find it. Any suggestions?
What should we read to each other at night?

We like Milne and Sandburg--what else could we read to each other at night? My love and I used to read to each other at night, but we're a bit particular about the material. It has to be warm, and nice, pleasant and intelligent. Short stories are better than long novels, and we really like things to turn out well--Even Lemony Snickett was too much of a downer after a hard day's work.

Pooh really fulfills these qualities admirably (and if you think it's just for children, read it again). Sandburg's Rootabaga Stories were also more-or-less perfect (Except the story of the skyscrapers who decide to have a child. That was sad). However, we've read through them all too many times! Thre must be other examples of Nice Literature out there?

PU, smelly feet, but oh how I love being sockless.

It's getting warmer in georgia, and I love wearing my shoes around with no socks. My old chucks and my asics Onitsuka tigers are pretty great for that, any other suggestions? Shoes with decent ventilation. I'm not looking for sandal recommendations. Something in the same vein as my asics. Just shoes that I can throw on, roll up my pants and ride my bike around in the awesome Georgia sun. Is this a strange thing? Does anybody else prefer being sockless?
