The Price of Nuts Drives Me Nuts

Anyone know why walnuts are so expensive right now? I went to my local healthy store today and non-organic walnuts are now $9.50 a pound. Are speculators involved? I could have sworn six months ago the price was under $5.00.

I like walnuts, but they don't like me.

Walnuts make my tongue hurt. Does this mean I'm allergic, or is it just their acidity? I've never noticed swelling, itching, or redness when I eat walnuts, but chewing them makes the inside of my mouth sting for about an hour. Small amounts (say, a few chopped-up walnut bits in a brownie) don't seem to bother me, but I've given up eating them straight. Trying to determine if I should avoid small amounts entirely or if I should eat them in small amounts for my health.

What are those cobwebs I find sometimes in walnuts?

Mmm, walnuts. Hey, what's that cobweb stuff? Every now and again when I'm shelling and eating walnuts, I'll crack open a nut and find a cobweb like substance inside.

I guess it's some sort of bug, I've never found any little crawlies in there. I also wonder if it's safe to eat? Any ideas?

What tastes good with apples?

I have decided to throw an apple tasting party (10 guests) this weekend using 10 – 12 different types of orchard apples sold at a local grocery store. What other foods should I have available for my guests? Cheese, bread, wine, mulled apple cider and walnut halves come to mind but does anyone have any specific cheeses, breads or wines that taste good with apples? Any other ideas for the party?
