Help me find a durable personal radio?

My boyfriend's portable radios keep breaking. Help me find him something more durable... My boyfriend listens to the radio while walking to and from work. Usually, he buys Sony Walkmen (Walkmans?). After about a year, something always breaks -- sometimes it's the headphone jack, sometimes it's the on-off button, sometimes it's the volume dial. Do you have a portable radio that you love and that has stood up to the test of time?

He's listening mostly to one or two stations, generally talk (NPR). This means that sound quality isn't his very first priority. But he does want all digital controls.

This radio isn't going to be exposed to the elements or mud or sweat or anything like that. It will be simply tossed in and out of jeans pockets and backpacks, repeatedly.

He's willing to pay up to $100 for something that will last him more than a year or two. So how about it, MeFites? What should he get?

I have some questions about listening to the radio in Europe.

I have some questions about listening to the radio in Europe. I'm studying abroad in Pau, France, next semester, and I think it'd be a good learning experience if I brought a walkman with me and listened to French radio. And then after the semester is over, I plan to travel to other countries (Germany, Italy, Greece, etc.) and listen to the radio there, too.

The following questions are really dumb...but I hope you don't judge me :) First, does European radio use FM and AM bands? Will my American walkman work ok? And does Radio France transmit to Pau, France (some of the Radio France stations look really great).

Thanks for your help!

the walkmans that won't play

Walkman repair help needed. I have four Walkmans all with some problem or other, usually minor (one has a bad earphone jack, one warbles, etc.) I would like to be able to fix them. Do I have to know all sorts of things about wiring and circuit boards? Is there a book or web-site that might explain such things?

I know it's probably easier to go to the thrift store and buy yet another, but usually they're snatched up (by... who? hipsters? I don't know...) and that's where these have come from and a problem always develops. Plus, I'd rather not throw in the trash perfectly repairable electronics.

n.b.- by 'walkman' i mean those what play cassette tapes.

Should I record DJ sets with Hi-MD or mp3? Is it easy to get music off the MD player and convert it?

Hi-MD vs mp3? I'm looking to buy something to record DJ sets with. I've been using my somewhat trusty Creative Jukebox for a while now, but it's time to move on. So, do I get an iPod or a Hi-MD Walkman? Does Sony "own" my music if I record to Hi-MD? That is, will I be able to get music off the MD player and convert it to other formats and whatnot?
