Monologues give me the catharsis I need to get going.

I'm looking for podcasts or other spoken word recordings, with the feel of the early Henry Rollins or recent Marc Maron: strongly cathartic, really aggro, with quasi-intellectual ambitions, seemingly able to talk on any issue, vaguely politically progressive, sometimes hyperpersonal. [more inside]

Surely I can walk across this reserve??

I'm looking for a walking route across the San Francisco State Fish and Game Refuge from the vicinity of Mills Creek Canyon Park in Burlingame to the beach. My hosts think the refuge is completely closed to public access, but they haven't explored it, so I thought I'd ask here.

Supportive athletic shoes for a 2 mile walking commute

I'm looking for athletic shoes for a walking commute, 2 miles each way. I have high arches, 'high volume' feet, and under-pronate (I roll to the outside of my feet when I land). Below $100 would be nice. Thanks! [more inside]

What am I doing to my foot?

I've taken up walking on a treadmill lately, and as I ramp up the intensity I seem to be bruising one small spot on one foot. I'm not sure what I'm doing to cause it. It's not a shoe issue. I get this whether I'm wearing regular running shoes or my Vibrams. [more inside]

Places to check out in Venice / Santa Monica

Walking in Venice/Santa Monica... so I'm in CA for another week. I'm a big walker... where should I walk? What are the great shops for music, books, film, sights, eats, drinks? Any great concerts, readings, plays I shouldn't miss? Or if there's something a single bus ride will get me to that you can recommend, please do so with specific boarding instructions. Thanks! Reasonably priced walking shoes that don't look like trainers?

We're going to Ireland for two weeks in early June, and while its not exactly a walking/hiking tour, I'm sure there's going to be quite a lot of walking through cities. I usually just go to Payless and get something that looks roughly like loafers, and wear them into the ground, but it has occurred to me that I may want something a little more sturdy for this. Any recommendation for shoes that are reasonably priced, comfortable, but don't look like I've just come from the gym? Or can I just by a cheaper pair of shoes and put in some sort of insert? Or any other recommendations? Possibly relevant details: I'm female, late 30s, live in the US, don't wear heels, my feet tend to run a little wide, and tend to wear things either like loafers or flats.

Do the benefits of a cortisone injection outweigh the risks?

I was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis a year ago. I am on Enbrel and it has helped a great deal with the pain I experienced in my arms and joints but I am still having really bad pain upon walking or standing in my low back, sacral joint areas...I swim and do a variety of stretches but it is not allowing me the recovery I long for. I use to walk a few miles everyday, hike on the weekends and I haven't been able to do that in a couple of years. I miss it! I have been reading up on Epidural Cortisone injections and I am curious about personal results people have had. I am interested in the good as well as the bad stories, so I can decide, after meeting with my Doctors, if I want to go through with it. In other words if the benefits outweigh the risks.

20 mile street hiking advice wanted

In less than 2 weeks time I am taking part in a 20 mile charity night-hike around the streets of London. Does anyone have any advice for such a venture? I've been hearing a lot about the benefits of walking barefoot, and barring that, wearing shoes like the Vibram Five Fingers or Nike Frees, which aren't padded. But are there cheaper alternatives?
