After a near lifetime of depression I am finally coming out the other side of it, albeit tentatively. I feel energized enough to start exercising daily as my doctor has advised. Sounds great, eh? The problem? I'm 100lbs overweight and my body is screaming no at me. Help me figure out how to overcome the aches to keep going. [more inside]

With high arches and knees that, all of a sudden, are constantly hurting on the medial side of the joint, I've got to find a walking shoe to help extend the life of these parts. I walk on sidewalks mostly, in the neighborhood. I think a weekly MoTown Dance Party at the local joint is the reason for new knee problems, because I've never had them before all this dancing.
I've had great difficulty finding a shoe made with high arches. Slipping in the "Dr. Scholls" type inserts doesn't do it (they slide around too much) and right now, I can't afford orthotics.
My mom has feet that have all but fallen apart. She's had foot and knee surgery and hobbles around. I don't want to end up that disabled!
Can anyone recommend a good shoe?

I'm looking at Craigslist for a treadmill (to build a walking desk). There seem to be a lot of Proforms and a few Nordics, with a smattering of other items. I'm leaning towards the Nordic, and want to find out: 1) What's a good price (they seem to be all over the map)? 2) What kind of questions should I ask the sellers? 3) Is there another brand/model that would work better for building a walking desk?

A Chicago-specific question: I would like to walk from the Sears Tower to the intersection of Sheffield and Armitage on a weekday evening, around 7pm. I'm a petite, young woman. What is the safest, not terribly out-of-the-way route to travel?

I'm looking for podcasts or other spoken word recordings, with the feel of the early Henry Rollins or recent Marc Maron: strongly cathartic, really aggro, with quasi-intellectual ambitions, seemingly able to talk on any issue, vaguely politically progressive, sometimes hyperpersonal. [more inside]

I'm looking for athletic shoes for a walking commute, 2 miles each way. I have high arches, 'high volume' feet, and under-pronate (I roll to the outside of my feet when I land). Below $100 would be nice. Thanks! [more inside]

I've taken up walking on a treadmill lately, and as I ramp up the intensity I seem to be bruising one small spot on one foot. I'm not sure what I'm doing to cause it. It's not a shoe issue. I get this whether I'm wearing regular running shoes or my Vibrams. [more inside]

What is the word for the thing that happens when two people are walking toward each other from opposite sides of the lane and one goes left to let the other pass, but the second goes left too and then they both go right together and left again?

Walking in Venice/Santa Monica... so I'm in CA for another week. I'm a big walker... where should I walk? What are the great shops for music, books, film, sights, eats, drinks? Any great concerts, readings, plays I shouldn't miss? Or if there's something a single bus ride will get me to that you can recommend, please do so with specific boarding instructions. Thanks! We're going to Ireland for two weeks in early June, and while its not exactly a walking/hiking tour, I'm sure there's going to be quite a lot of walking through cities. I usually just go to Payless and get something that looks roughly like loafers, and wear them into the ground, but it has occurred to me that I may want something a little more sturdy for this. Any recommendation for shoes that are reasonably priced, comfortable, but don't look like I've just come from the gym? Or can I just by a cheaper pair of shoes and put in some sort of insert? Or any other recommendations?
Possibly relevant details: I'm female, late 30s, live in the US, don't wear heels, my feet tend to run a little wide, and tend to wear things either like loafers or flats.

I want to chronicle this process of walking all of Manhattan in a daily blog, preferably with a daily picture and some text. What do I call this blog? (And should I use tumblr? And anything else to keep in mind?) [more inside]

I was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis a year ago. I am on Enbrel and it has helped a great deal with the pain I experienced in my arms and joints but I am still having really bad pain upon walking or standing in my low back, sacral joint areas...I swim and do a variety of stretches but it is not allowing me the recovery I long for. I use to walk a few miles everyday, hike on the weekends and I haven't been able to do that in a couple of years. I miss it! I have been reading up on Epidural Cortisone injections and I am curious about personal results people have had. I am interested in the good as well as the bad stories, so I can decide, after meeting with my Doctors, if I want to go through with it. In other words if the benefits outweigh the risks.

Tonight I need to buy a wooden walking cane in NYC tonight. It's supposed to be sturdy and not retractable. The grip doesn't matter. Any ideas where I can buy one? The average places like KMart and Duane Reade seem to offer only aluminum and fiberglass canes.
