Wake up, feet

More often lately, one of my feet seems to forget what it's doing and shuffles, causing me to stumble and almost fall. Is this normal or do I have a larger problem? [more inside]

I would prefer not to look like an extra in Working Girl

Over the last 4 months, I swapped out the driving part of my commute for walking. I walk about 4 miles round trip. This is great, but my beloved heels are all gathering dust in my closet. I would like to do the shoe swap out at work, but I really dislike the look of running shoes and dresses clearly designed for heels. Where can I get cute shoes for this purpose or am I resigned to running shoes?

Can DMV suspend/revoke license for J Walking in another state?

My friend has a drivers license from the state of Pennsylvania and is currently living in Los Angeles California. They got a ticket for J Walking and the officer took down their name, License # and home address in Los Angeles. Then my friend recently receive a letter from the CA DMV saying that if they don't pay the fine then they will suspend/revoke the license. Can CA suspend/revoke their Pennsylvania license for J Walking in Los Angeles, CA? Yes/No and how did you resolve it or get out of it? Thanks!

new year's resolution fail

I went for a rather long, brisk walk yesterday after an extended period of holiday-season inactivity and didn't think to stretch first (stupid, I know). Now I've got lower leg pain along the front where the leg meets the ankle, and the balls of my feet are hurting. Can anyone recommend some stretches or something else that will make the pain go away for now? [more inside]

What was this geometric creature builder website?

Several years ago, I saw a website with a fun little flash or javascript applet thingy where you could build little tensegrity structure creatures, then have oscillating movements applied to the pieces, so that the structures would seem to "walk". I don't remember what it was called! From memory, one of the simpler structures looked sort of like this. What was it? Is it still online? [more inside]

Walking a half marathon

I want to walk a half marathon. My city's marathon is next fall, so I have plenty of time to get ready. I found various training plans online that range from 12-16 weeks, but that's really not what my question is about. I'm wondering, since I have almost a year till then, what should I do be doing now? Does it matter? I'm in good health but haven't exercised consistently lately. Also, general walking-a-half advice is very welcome!

And glide... and glide...

Someone who very rarely wears high heels just got a pair of snazzy high heeled boots that I'm now wearing to work every day. (About an inch and a half tall, thick heels not stiletto) It's a learning experience. I'm trying to figure out how to walk gracefully but I still seem to be clomping awkwardly. Is there a trick to this or just practice? Also, I've observed that some women move their hips when they walk (which I've never done naturally) so I tried that but it makes this weird sensation in my hip joints like "popping" kind of. Is that normal? Is it just because it's a different kind of movement? Or does it mean I'm terribly deformed?

How could I have handled this situation better?

Please tell me how I could have handled this situation better. I unintentionally got into an argument with a dog-walker at the park where I was conducting a running training session. I thought I handled the situation to the best of my ability, but my trainee told me that she thought I hadn't. So I wanted to ask your advice on how to deal with the same situation if it arose again. Unhappy Feet needs specific walking shoe advice

With high arches and knees that, all of a sudden, are constantly hurting on the medial side of the joint, I've got to find a walking shoe to help extend the life of these parts. I walk on sidewalks mostly, in the neighborhood. I think a weekly MoTown Dance Party at the local joint is the reason for new knee problems, because I've never had them before all this dancing. I've had great difficulty finding a shoe made with high arches. Slipping in the "Dr. Scholls" type inserts doesn't do it (they slide around too much) and right now, I can't afford orthotics. My mom has feet that have all but fallen apart. She's had foot and knee surgery and hobbles around. I don't want to end up that disabled! Can anyone recommend a good shoe?
