I'll be in Irvine for work this coming week and will have Tuesday and Wednesday evening to myself. Please help me not waste those two nights in my hotel room eating overpriced room service. [more inside]
I want to walk a half marathon. My city's marathon is next fall, so I have plenty of time to get ready. I found various training plans online that range from 12-16 weeks, but that's really not what my question is about. I'm wondering, since I have almost a year till then, what should I do be doing now? Does it matter? I'm in good health but haven't exercised consistently lately. Also, general walking-a-half advice is very welcome!
Someone who very rarely wears high heels just got a pair of snazzy high heeled boots that I'm now wearing to work every day. (About an inch and a half tall, thick heels not stiletto) It's a learning experience. I'm trying to figure out how to walk gracefully but I still seem to be clomping awkwardly. Is there a trick to this or just practice? Also, I've observed that some women move their hips when they walk (which I've never done naturally) so I tried that but it makes this weird sensation in my hip joints like "popping" kind of. Is that normal? Is it just because it's a different kind of movement? Or does it mean I'm terribly deformed?
Please tell me how I could have handled this situation better. I unintentionally got into an argument with a dog-walker at the park where I was conducting a running training session. I thought I handled the situation to the best of my ability, but my trainee told me that she thought I hadn't. So I wanted to ask your advice on how to deal with the same situation if it arose again. I love to walk the streets observing and experiencing. Recent I discovered the French term "flaneur" which loosely translated, means "someone who walks the city in order to experience it". I was wondering if anyone knew of any essays (historical or modern) written about the joys of being a flaneur or a flaneuse? [more inside]

Several dog walking services in my area of San Diego offer a range of services and prices, and I'd like to get a sense of what others considerable reasonable, and what services, if anything, people find worth the money for besides just the walking itself. In terms of pooch specifics, my obese italian greyhound needs a longer, more vigorous walk each afternoon/evening than I can make time for given my current work schedule. thanks

After a near lifetime of depression I am finally coming out the other side of it, albeit tentatively. I feel energized enough to start exercising daily as my doctor has advised. Sounds great, eh? The problem? I'm 100lbs overweight and my body is screaming no at me. Help me figure out how to overcome the aches to keep going. [more inside]
With high arches and knees that, all of a sudden, are constantly hurting on the medial side of the joint, I've got to find a walking shoe to help extend the life of these parts. I walk on sidewalks mostly, in the neighborhood. I think a weekly MoTown Dance Party at the local joint is the reason for new knee problems, because I've never had them before all this dancing. I've had great difficulty finding a shoe made with high arches. Slipping in the "Dr. Scholls" type inserts doesn't do it (they slide around too much) and right now, I can't afford orthotics. My mom has feet that have all but fallen apart. She's had foot and knee surgery and hobbles around. I don't want to end up that disabled! Can anyone recommend a good shoe?

I'm looking at Craigslist for a treadmill (to build a walking desk). There seem to be a lot of Proforms and a few Nordics, with a smattering of other items. I'm leaning towards the Nordic, and want to find out: 1) What's a good price (they seem to be all over the map)? 2) What kind of questions should I ask the sellers? 3) Is there another brand/model that would work better for building a walking desk?

I've taken up walking on a treadmill lately, and as I ramp up the intensity I seem to be bruising one small spot on one foot. I'm not sure what I'm doing to cause it. It's not a shoe issue. I get this whether I'm wearing regular running shoes or my Vibrams. [more inside]

Walking in Venice/Santa Monica... so I'm in CA for another week. I'm a big walker... where should I walk? What are the great shops for music, books, film, sights, eats, drinks? Any great concerts, readings, plays I shouldn't miss? Or if there's something a single bus ride will get me to that you can recommend, please do so with specific boarding instructions. Thanks! We're going to Ireland for two weeks in early June, and while its not exactly a walking/hiking tour, I'm sure there's going to be quite a lot of walking through cities. I usually just go to Payless and get something that looks roughly like loafers, and wear them into the ground, but it has occurred to me that I may want something a little more sturdy for this. Any recommendation for shoes that are reasonably priced, comfortable, but don't look like I've just come from the gym? Or can I just by a cheaper pair of shoes and put in some sort of insert? Or any other recommendations? Possibly relevant details: I'm female, late 30s, live in the US, don't wear heels, my feet tend to run a little wide, and tend to wear things either like loafers or flats.
