Help with A Small Orange

I just started using a new Cloud VPS at A Small Orange. I've been using WebFaction shared hosting for years. I have lots of clients using them for hosting and I understand pretty well what I'm doing over there. But the ASO documentation seems light and I feel like I need to educate myself more about what I'm using there. I feel like I've exhausted the articles in the KB. [more inside]

Options for self-hosted email filtering software?

I'm looking for something like Sanebox that I can host myself on a relatively low-powered VPS. I tried Simplify Email, but found it was a bit of a pain, and I ended loosing some mail. I also tried my email provider's filters in Roundcube, but they seemed to stop working over time. I'm currently relying on a copy of Postbox running on my home computer all the time. [more inside]

How do I route everything except a few ports out a VPN?

I've got a VPS. If I set up a VPN connection from it to a VPN provider in NL, everything goes through the VPN, but that means I can't SSH to the machine anymore. How do I set this up such that the VPS is listening at its regular IP on SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS, but everything else goes through the VPN? [more inside]

Third party Plesk/Parallels Server Administration

Our VPS webhost was acquired by a larger firm, and slowly moved from managed hosting to unmanaged hosting. Our Plesk/Parallels server was compromised last night. In order to get it back online, I had to backup the old server, then have it wiped/reset. I'm looking for a third party server administrator to help move email files from the backup to the accounts on the reinstalled server. [more inside]

Best distrubution for Linux VPS?

I run a couple of django-based websites/webapps. What OS should I use for my VPS? The most important thing is security and easy installation of packages (including dependencies). I also prefer a system that is easy to maintain. Security is more important, but if all else is equal I would specifically love something with easy to make init-scripts. I know I can install third party packages to do just about anything, but I prefer a batteries-included approach if it exists. [more inside]

Is VPS worth the extra $'s and limited resources?

Comparing VPS vs. Shared Server performance. Are there some ways to compare server performance on a couple of hosting accounts I have. I'm interested in seeing how much better the VPS account performs and then deciding if that's worth the extra monthly charge. Or the inverse: is the shared server account adequate. [more inside]

What's the Best Way to Give Far-Away Virtual Assistants Access to Software I Own?

What's the Best Way to Give Far-Away Virtual Assistants Access to Software on My Computer? ("Best"= most secure, cheapest, simplest, most hassle-free) Hi, I'd like to give access to software that I own to other people, preferably at times that I'm asleep and my computer is off. I'm considering renting a VPS, and installing therein the software I want them to use. Of course, the software I'd be sharing with them would be XP-based... is that a problem, given the fact that VPSs are usually Linux? Is WINE adequate for this? While I am also entertaining the possibility of using a desktopsharing app to just give VAs access to specified folders and apps on my machine, I'd rather install the necessary software on a VPS and have them use that. Any suggestions you can give me, including other and better ways of doing this, would be much appreciated... Thanks. :)

Why does Apache2 serve a subdomain when given an IP?

I have a domain hosted on a VPS running CentOS5. Whenever I enter http://my-vps-ip in my browser, I get redirected to http://subdomain.mysite.com.
