My 1998 Volvo S70 has been making an audible whirring/grinding noise when driving and braking. It's intermittent (though lately, it's been happening daily), unable to replicate reliably, occurs when driving at slower speeds (less than 35 mph), and occurs multiple times within the first 15 minutes or so of turning the car on and driving. No dashboard lights have shown up and the mechanic can't replicate the problem or figure out what's happening. What's going on? (additional details inside)

Asking on behalf of someone else: I need snow chains for my 2006 Volvo S40. Official Volvo chains sell for at least $310, which is more than I'm willing to spend. Are there cheaper alternatives?

I have a 1991 Volvo 740 with a 4 cylinder engine that was rebuilt less than 3000 miles ago. Car was just in an accident that totaled the car but didn't affect the engine. So I figure I'll look for another Volvo that needs an engine. Does anyone know what year & models can take that engine? Or point me in the direction of where to look. Or just part the car out and start fresh? Thank you!

My 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo sedan failed inspection for a tie rod, a ball joint, and front tires. I took it in and am sitting around waiting on my estimate. Just curious. How much should I expect to pay for this? Labor is $70/hr.

Help - quick! Someone has offered to buy our 1991 Volvo 240 wagon for parts but we are being required to set an asking price instead of him making an offer. Anyone have any advice? The mechanic kind of scoffed at $500.

Last year I almost bought a new
Volvo c30. I drove one and liked it, but then work got busy and I put the whole thing off until the spring. However, in December Ford announced that they would be selling Volvo to
Geely.
Geely has apparently has only been manufacturing cars since 1989. This makes me hesitant, even though the BBC report on the sale states:
Industry observers say the sale is good news for Volvo. Am I over thinking this, or is the ownership of a car company irrelevant?

I own a 2001 Volvo V40 that done 109000 miles. It has developed a fault that I am having difficulty identifying. When reaching speeds of 60mph to 70 mph the car is shaking badly when the engine is under power, it stops when you ease back the accelerator even if maintaining the same speed. Up to 50/55mph it is not evident. I have had all wheels rebalanced and new tyres on the front, the rear are also in good condition. Swapping them round made no difference. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

What do I do with our broken car? (Long explanation)
We have a 2001 S40 Turbo. Despite following the standard maintenance schedule and ensuring oil/water, etc is always good, it's been a pain in then neck since we bought it in 2003. I think I've put more into it for repairs than I paid for it. The last 18 months it's had a problem with the temp gauge spiking and then dropping down to normal. We've had it in a half a dozen times and each time the mechanics replace the themostat and the heat sensor. That fixes it for a while and then 3 months later, boom ... it happens again. No one has ever found the problem, until now.

I have a 1999 Volvo S70. I was driving yesterday when foul smelling steam started coming out of the air conditioning vents and also from underneath the ashtray. My coolant level was very low (the reservoir was empty), and I added a whole gallon of coolant but it did not stay in the reservoir. Is my coolant pooling somewhere bad or do I just need to add more? Also is it possible to remove a fuse or something so my air conditioning won't turn on at all until I can take it in to get fixed? As it is now, steam starts coming out of the vents after about five minutes of driving.

This question is for my friend. He's looking to buy a more fuel efficient car (he gets 10-12 mpg from his Suburban—wants more like 20-25). He is looking at Volvo cars, specifically the 2000-2002 S60's, S70's, and C70's. Evidently the convertible models from the early 2000's weren't that safe. Looking to spend $11 grand or less. What information do you have about these Volvo models? What should he look out for? Are their similar convertibles to the C70 with similar MPG and better safety/maintenance records?

While my taillights are off, my brake lights work just fine. When they are on, my left one goes out. How can I fix this? I'm driving a mid 80's Volvo. My car uses the same bulb for taillight and brake-light. Basically, while my taillights are supposed to be on, and I step on the brakes, that entire bulb turns off (on the left side).

My 1994 Volvo 940 wagon seems to have minor, intermittent electrical problems. The cruise control went a few months ago. The illumination on the transmission indicator went for a while and now it's back. The sunroof was a bit testy for a few days. Now the blower for the climate control is out. What's going on, you think? This last one's a pisser, and it might be fixed with a fuse, but it's been too cold and wet to try. But something sinister is going on even if I just need a fuse.
