How can I actually decide whether to go back to school and become a psychotherapist? Is there anyplace in NYC where I could get some hands-on experience to help me decide if I want to do this?

Also, in terms of training, what are some programs or certifications that will help train/prepare me for going overseas?

Some friends and I will be in New Orleans from June 11-17th for
a conference, and were wondering if there's any good way to help out with the injured birds then. It sounds like the shore work is off-limits due to toxicity, so we're fine contributing in any way we can (coffee/hugs/protests?).
What are some good organizations to contact for this, since we'll only be available for a short amount of time (1 full day on that Wednesday perhaps, or maybe some afternoons of other days)? If it matters, we'll be car-free (though cab-savvy) and situated near the convention center. Thanks!

My new job starts August 1. From about June 13 to July 28, I'll be in Boston with nothing to do. It's a big block of time, and I have money saved from past jobs, so I've been thinking of volunteering in Haiti or on the Gulf Coast. Is there a good way to do either of these things? Is there cool stuff for me to do locally instead? (I do know about Boston Cares, but they would send me to a different place every day and I'd prefer more committed work if it's available.)

Mission of Mercy Filter: How can I find sources of cheery personal mail for my lonely elder Alzheimer's patient?
I live with my mother-in-law who has middle stage Alzheimer's. She does a lot of sitting and staring. She has no attention span for books or magazines or TV. She lights up for visitors, dessert, church... and personal mail.
I am looking for a service that arranges (basically, one-directional) "pen-pals" for elder shut-ins. She has just enough means to assure her basic care, but not much for extras. This would have to be a volunteer service like a charity or ministry.

Breaking out of my funk filter: I'd like to do some volunteer work on a regular but limited basis (say, a couple hours a week). I feel that writing is one of my skills, and in the past I've helped friends write really great resumes and cover letters, so I think this might be a good thing for me to focus on. I suppose helping with writing college essays might also work. I have an idea that I'd like to work with veterans specifically, although I'm open to different ideas. And I live in the SF Bay Area. So can you suggest organizations that I might work with - either in my ideal scenario of helping vets with resumes - or doing something else that would utilize my skills?
