I'm in the city center in Groningen, the Netherlands. It is almost 6.30am. For hour on hour now, I've been listening to throbbing bass from the dance club across the way, and I haven't slept all night. This loud music seems to be a new thing. What should I do?

Background music and effects are way louder than voices in XBMC, so much so that I have to get up and turn the volume down every time theme song or music comes on during TV shows or movies for fear of disturbing neighbors (not to mention that they're uncomfortably loud).

So I was listening to the sound check for the upcoming U2 concert yesterday from my house, which is just over 2km from the stadium. I could tell that the sound was immensely loud at the source even though it wasn't rattling my windows or anything. How did I know it was a huge sound at a distance rather than coming from nearby? What auditory cues tell us this?

Is there any way to normalize the volume output on my PC so I'm not startled by clicking on a video link? The volume on YouTube and other sites varies so wildly from video to video that my
modus operandi is to mute before I play the video, then slowly increase the volume, but I'm hoping there is a better way.

How can I remove the component of pitch (or frequency) from an audio waveform, while maintaining the amplitude? I'm looking for a process analogous to desaturating a colour image to black and white: rendering an audio file literally monotonous but maintaining its rhythm (as changes in volume over time).

I need to count how many times a sump pump runs in a given period. The sump pump pumps water out of a hole on the ground, it is activated by a float switch - so generally speaking it pumps the same amount of water out each time it runs (the volume of water from the top 'on' level to the lower 'off' level). I want to know how much water is being pumped per week/month/whatever.

I have a few Macbook Pro systems at work that we've installed Windows XP via Bootcamp on. We've done this with previous Macbook models in the past. This time, however, there is an audio problem: the audio on the XP side is so low it's close to non-existent.
Is anyone familiar with this problem? Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?

My iPhone's volume is too freaking low. How do I boost it? When calling out, the first ring is at a decent level, then it backs down to almost inaudible. When talking to people, especially if I'm outdoors, or if there is any background noise, I can't hear anything! Does anyone else have this problem? This is a first-gen iPhone, in case that makes a difference, and I've already traded one in at the Apple store for the exact same reason.
