VW Jetta reliability and expense

My wife and I are looking to buy a used car. I've had my heart set on a Volkswagen Jetta seemingly forever. She has heard some horror stories about the cost of maintenance and repairs for VWs, and does not want to buy one. I've heard the same horror stories, but the data I've been able to find online hasn't confirmed them (although, to be fair, it hasn't entirely disproven them, either). I'd like to hear actual VW owners' stories to help us make a decision. [more inside]

Chico/Paradise/Lake Oroville: off-the-grid camping spots to recommend?

Hi folks, we have a tradition (this is year six!) that every Thanksgiving we take our boys camping (and cooking) over the holiday break. It's been an awesome tradition, and we've recently relocated to the Bay Area from SoCal and are looking forward to the first year of a new range for our Thankscamping. Your insight about the area would be very helpful! [more inside]

How to re-key a '69 Volkswagen Westfalia in San Francisco?

We have a 1969 VW camper van. We love her. Unfortunately, the previous owners redid the locks horribly and now we have a problem: the back window hatch lock doesn't work, we don't have a key to it that works, and we can't fix it. [more inside]

Buying a used European car for $5k or less after a car-less decade: y/n?

Used car filter: after a decade without owning a car, I'd like to get back into the game. I'd prefer to spend $5k or less. I understand this means older cars/higher miles. I find myself drawn to early 2000s VW Golfs/GTIs, late-90s BMW 300 series, '90s Saabs, early '00s Volvos. Are any of these types going to be substantially more reliable or cheaper to maintain than others? [more inside]

How can I replace a lost 1989 VW vanagon key?

Totally embarrassing, but I lost the sole remaining key to my family's 1989 VW Vanagon (on my way to make a copy, natch) ... I'll be calling locksmiths and my mechanic today, but if anyone has any experience and/or knowledge of fixes for such a SNAFU, I would appreciate tips. (No, I don't have a picture of it. Yes, very stupid. Trust me; I've heard it.)

How can I fix up an old VW Beetle on an almost non-existent budget?

I don't have a lot of money, or experience, or tools, and about a year ago I asked about fixing up an old Fiat. Most people told me that wasn't a great idea, and that I should look into Volkswagens, and since then I've fallen in love with the VW Beetle. My question is this: what are some ways I can (1) find a VW Beetle that is a good candidate to wrench on that probably won't need everything but the chassis replaced and (2) get into the "old Beetle enthusiast" community without having a ton of disposable income? Should I buy my friend's car? How can we fairly value it?

One of my oldest friends is selling his 2002 VW Passat Station Wagon (GLX V6). He bought it new and has taken good care of it (I've known him for 30 years; he takes care of things). He has all of the car's records. As it turns out, I'm in the market for a used car. The car drives beautifully. He is listing it at $6K. But a thorough pre-purchase inspection uncovered several problems, for which he is willing to take the price down. How can we find a fair value for the car? And should I buy this Volkswagen at all? Put new battery in VW Golf and now it won't start. Help!

Battery died in a Volkswagen Golf. New battery connected and now whenever the car door is opened the alarm goes off, which came as a shock because we didn't know the car had an alarm! Disconnecting a thin blue wire on the negative battery terminal disables the alarm but the car won't start -- dash lights come on, radio plays fine, but the engine doesn't even make a sound. Just dead. Presumably an immobiliser. Help! [more inside]

VW Golf mk4 oil pan busted. Is there anything wrong with my car?

I was driving up a mountain road today in my 2000 VW Golf GLS, when I ran over a rock that was about the size of a football and broke open my oil pan. I drove a little further down the road before my "check oil" light lit up and my engine started getting louder. When I had a chance to pull over and have a look under the car, I saw that the oil pan was busted and the remaining amount of my cars oil spewing out. (read on) [more inside]

Is $10,500 reasonable for a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta TDI?

Is $10,500 reasonable for a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta TDI? It's in very good condition and has 135,000 km. He'd be selling it certified and e-tested. The seller is asking $10,500. I countered with $9,500, and he came back with $10,000 not certified. How much does certification usually cost? Would I be wise just to go with what he's asking so everything's done?

What's wrong with my car's A/C?

I have a 2003 Jetta with around 75,000 miles. It is hot here, and I have been running the air conditioning nearly every day for the past month or two, and I have noticed some strange occurrences. First, if I am parked with the A/C running, even for a short amount of time, the car seems to vibrate rather forcefully. In addition, when I pull away from the parking spot, there is always a fairly large pool of water where my car was. Also, when I am driving fast, say 60-75 mph, and I change the speed of the A/C from high to low, there is a noticeable jerk in my acceleration. It is most unusual... [more inside]
