Anybody out there proficient with Apple OS X Voiceover, the interface for sight-impaired users? My MacBook Pro screen is completely dead but the computer is alive. I want to use Voiceover to navigate to the Sharing Preferences and turn on screen sharing so I can access the screenless computer across the network. [more inside]

I'm posting this question on behalf of my brother. He is looking to start doing some part-time work in the voice-over field. I'll be his technical advisor and producer. We'd like to get some advice on how to get started; like, places to find sample scripts for a demo, what equipment would truly be necessary, your experience with accepting payment, and/or any other items you wish you had known when starting out in the voice-over field. I've done the requisite Internet research and reading of past Ask Metafilter posts, but would really like to get personal experiences about the specific items mentioned in the expanded question area. Why is my iMac running the latest operating system talking to me? It's repeating everything I type so I'm going to make the question short. I think it thinks I'm blind...
It also reads titles of windows as I switch between them out loud...
Please make it stop.

CuriosityFilter: We all know that movie trailers that begin "In a world..." became so common that those three words became an in-joke thanks to Don LaFontaine. I know many spoof movies (like the Scary Movie series) have spoof-type trailers that start out with the voiceover, "In a world...". How many trailers actually have used that voiceover snippet in the beginning un-ironically, and what is the most famous one? [more inside]

I'm trying to determine the best bare bones microphone system for recording a basic voice-over demo cd for the smallest financial outlay possible.
Is there a tremendous advantage to USB mics over 1/8" mics? Can I get decent quality without having to buy a preamp, or is phantom power the only way to go? Can a USB headset give me CD quality audio, more or less? [more inside]
