My mother's husband has died, but we have his voice in her voice mailbox. We have Verizon and we'd like to leave. I know there's a way to download voice mails, but what is it? How do we do it? Please explain it to me like I'm five. I see there is a similar question from 2007, but surely things have changed since then.
I have a Nexus 5 running Android 6.01. I have a notification that will not clear that says I have 5 voicemails. I have zero voicemails. The internet is positively lousy with advice on how to fix this. Not a drop of it works. HALP.
The other day I was lying in bed and my cell phone started ringing. Caller ID showed an out-of-town area code. I picked up, heard a low voice murmuring in an unfamiliar language, and hung up. A few seconds later, my phone rang again. Same number, same murmur, another hangup. Then, a third ring. This time I let it go to voicemail. Then there was another ring, and another voicemail. These voicemails are SO WEIRD. [more inside]
A friend of mine is receiving anonymous threatening voicemails from a blocked number. The caller knows her name and address. She immediately called the police; they basically brushed it off and said she could give them her info if she came into the office. She doesn't know what to do. [more inside]
Recently I got a peculiar voicemail that was entirely in Spanish or Italian, about a minute long. The woman sounds very serious, and I'm intensely curious about what it says. Once I've converted it to MP3, what's the best way of getting it translated?
Why does my iPhone require carrier-based voicemail service? Why can't it handle voicemail entirely on the phone itself? [more inside]
I have a cheap pre-paid 100-minute unlimited data + text plan from T-mobile. I use wifi calling at home, but the minutes fly by even though I don't talk much when I'm out. When I am out of minutes, people get a "you cannot call at this time" message with no opportunity to leave a voice mail. Is there a way for me to set up voice messages through data or otherwise? Do I have any other options besides changing my plan? [more inside]
I've been using a Google Voice number as my primary phone number for years now, and over the past few months, a problem has come up with its behavior on incoming calls which is making it seriously difficult to use. [more inside]
It was someone's homemade outgoing machine message that included some sound effects, and then a voice saying "just show me a rich geologist" followed by a different voice excitedly exclaiming "I'm the mayor!" I definitely downloaded this in the last five years, but I don't know where. Do you?
I work full-time in an office of a half-dozen people (in Ontario, Canada if it is relevant). One of the duties in my current job is to reply to general emails to my company's main address and to check the general voice mail... if someone calls after hours or chooses not to be put through to an individual, they can still leave a voice mail on the main number, and the main email is info@[business].ca which gets maybe five or ten questions a day. At the request of my boss, I do these things a couple of times a day, including on weekends and holidays. I am fine with this and I understand the reasoning - sometimes people write or call with a time-sensitive question. This usually takes me ten minutes a day tops (once in while there is a bigger thing and it may be an hour on those days), but it seems not entirely fair that I do this with zero compensation for having to be available for work on my days off. How best to negotiate what might be a better arrangement for this? Or should I even bother? [more inside]
When people call my cell phone and don't leave a voicemail, I tend not to call them back. Should I? Is there a pervasive cultural expectation of which I am unaware that one is obligated to return missed calls? [more inside]
I've just started a small business that involves some calling to get new clients. I have an 800 number via an online voicemail system for which I pay a small monthly fee. I realize now that what I want to do is be able to call people and have my 800 number and/or biz ID name show up on the caller ID. I have a good quality land line, a personal one for our house. Is there a way for me to dial a service which forwards my call as if coming from an 800 number and also gives call forwarding and voicemail service? [more inside]

I use google voicemail on my Motorola Droid. When someone leaves a message that includes a phone number that is different from the number they're calling from, google does a good job of transcribing it. As far as I can tell, however, there's no simple way of calling back that spoken, transcribed number. Instead, I have to memorize it, switch over to phone and key it in (and forget a few digits and switch back and forth and crash the car etc). I feel like maybe I'm just missing something simple, but I'm coming up empty searching for an answer. Does anyone know if it's possible?

A question for IT and telecoms boffins: Help me understand voicemail. Specifically, what would need to go wrong with a mobile phone company's voicemail server for it to randomly connect customers to the mailboxes of complete strangers? Is it more likely to be an isolated technical glitch, a systemic network security problem, intentional foul play, or something else?
