Best prenatal vitamin?

I'm planning on getting pregnant in the next few months, and I know the folic acid in prenatal vitamins is actually most useful for preventing birth defects if you take it in the weeks before getting knocked up. So, I find myself in the market for prenatal vitamins, but I'm finding it hard to do any research at all about what brands are better or worse. I turn to the hive mind. Obsessive over-thinkers and over-researchers of metafilter: what is the best brand or type of prenatals? [more inside]

In Search of Soy Free Soylent Substitutes

I am having a hard time getting enough calories and nutrients in my body each day. Part of the issue involves inconsistent access to food due to family stuff; the rest involves a loss of appetite as I progress through treatment for bipolar II. I'd love to be able to keep something in my room that can help me stop going to sleep hungry, but I need it to be soy, walnut, and coconut free. What might be a good interim solution as I work back towards eating proper meals every day?

I want to get stoked on vitamins and nutrients.

What are your favorite healthy plant-inclusive dinners that you actually get excited to shop for, cook, and eat? I'm looking less for "I put onions in my sauteed spinach" or "I cook lentils into a flavorless gruel," and more for something like "I roast chicken with garbanzos and cherry tomatoes, then serve it with a smokey yogurt sauce." To DHA or not DHA when pregnant?

Hello! My wife is pregnant with our first child (second trimester.) She's been taking a DHA supplement (Nordic Naturals PreNatal) for prenatal brain development, but has suddenly gotten worried about whether it's good to take a DHA supplement. Our doctor/nurse pretty much has no advice on this matter. Now my wife is worrying about mercury/lead though we can't find any evidence that this actually exists in fish oils, or Nordic Naturals in particular. Take it or not? [more inside]

Multivitamin dosage question? Can it be bad?

Ok, this won't be long. Anyway, I'm not too crazy on the supplements department, usually just taking multivitamin along my normal diet, and fish oil. I decided to buy a higher quality one, and got a "Highly Dosed Max Vit-Min" recommended by the lady at the supplement store, because I excercise on a fairly regular basis recently. I'm not too scared anything can happen, but I'm confused by the amounts on the label and recommended daily value (RDV in the US, I guess?) percentages. For example, Thiamine (Vitamin B1) is 80mg, 7273% RDV. Riboflavine is also 80mg, 5714% RDV. Isn't that overkill to take daily (seriously seven thousand percent above the RDV )? Can I get hypervitaminosis from this stuff, or does the fact that I excercise somehow modify my requirements? For reference on the low end, Calcium for example is 8mg, 1% RDV. Or am I just being silly and not understanding labels??
