I have a laptop that Microsoft should have never approved for vista it wheezes and struggles under vista and is close to useless. I was wanted to install some open operating system and use it basically as a netbook. What options do I have and how do I go about it?

How do I solve this annoying Vista bug? About 10% of the time when I open a file browser dialog from within a program (save as, open file, etc.) the program immediately closes. No error, no warning, the program is just gone. I have not been able to find a solution with google. [more inside]
