Should I get contacts after wearing eyeglasses for 20 years?

I've been wearing eyeglasses for the past 20 years or so, and I'm tired of them. However, I'm on the fence about getting contacts – any tips or thoughts would be appreciated. [more inside]

Fitting for contacts seems iffy; help!

Two weeks ago I went to the UC Berkeley eye clinic for my annual eye exam and decided to be fitted for contacts because it turns out there are contacts that don't require solution. I didn't know! But it feels like I'm being railroaded into buying the most expensive kind of lenses; am I? [more inside]

You are not my optometrist.

I am moderately nearsighted and currently wear glasses with a prescription of roughly -3 in each eye. I take my glasses off to read, and always have. This is not because writing appears blurry with my glasses on, but because reading with my glasses on causes my eyes to strain, or feels like it does, and it has always just felt more comfortable to take them off. Does this make me a bad candidate for contacts or corrective surgery? Do I just need to get used to reading with my vision corrected? Is this something bifocals/bifocal contacts can address?

Is Lasik worth pursuing if my eyes are wonky?

I've worn contacts for over 30 years now but have recently considered getting Lasik. I have heavy astigmatism and have been wearing toric lenses, which work most of the time but still tend to drift making my vision poor at any distance. I signed up for a Lasik seminar, attended and was interested in continuing. I stopped wearing my contacts over two weeks before my preop exam but apparently my eyes still haven't settled to a consistent shape because they couldn't get consistent results when measuring them. I have another exam scheduled in two weeks but I'm beginning to wonder if it's even worth it. Should I just accept defeat or go back and try again?

Can Contacts Replace My Progressive & Computer Glasses?

I'm considering wearing contact lenses again in lieu of eyeglasses to make working with camera viewfinders easier. I've worn glasses since i was a kid. Got the usual array of problems: Nearsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia. Currently wear progressive lenses in my glasses. However, I find reading with my progressive lenses is unpleasant, so I usually take them off. I use a separate pair of glasses for computer work. I was fitted with a test pair of soft monovision lenses last week. They're not going to work. Close vision -- within arm's reach -- is unacceptable. I told the clinician I wanted contacts to provide vision correction at least as good as my glasses. I want any contacts I wear to work at distance vision, close vision, reading, driving, computer work, etc. She replied that I wouldn't get that with contacts. Is she right?
