I have a U.S. passport. Same-day and rush processing for Chinese visas in the U.S. has been suspended as of 4 May 2009, likely because of swine flu fears, leaving everyone with a 6-business-day wait. But I leave sooner than that. [more inside]

I've heard that it's hard to enter the USA from the UK if you have a criminal record. I was sectioned in 2007 (for being a danger to myself, rather than the more serious condition of being a danger to others) so technically have been arrested. Will this bar me from ever going?

Me and my gf want to visit the Altai Republic in Russia. However a friend of ours wanted to visit the place, but weren't allowed to enter because he didn't have a permit. So where does one get a permit to enter the Altai Republic and why is it necessary to get one? I mean, a tourist-visa should be able to give you access to most of the country as long as the cities you want to visit is stated on the visa.

Where can I find a list of all countries I can visit which don't require a visa (I'll be staying less than seven days at most)? I just want a list; when I resort to Google, I always end up typing in a random country's visa requirements just so I can find out. Thanks. (PS I'm from the Philippines)

A dear friend of mine desperately wants to improve his life and follow his dreams. I live in a far freer country so I'm unsure of exactly how best to show him support sometimes. I want to tell him not to give up hope and to work hard towards his goals, that it's the only way they'll happen. Sometimes I wonder if maybe I'm just being an overly optimistic American, though. I want to help him in any way I can, but we take for granted the possibilities we have here. Things are far different in his country than in mine and I know that. So I feel a bit useless as support. Insights, please... [more inside]
