My husband has been offered a great job in New York and we're looking to move out there in September (we're both British citizens currently living in the UK). He'll be on a work visa and I'll only have residence rights - can I work as self-employed, or freelance for a UK company, without a work visa? [more inside]

I'm a Canadian going to grad school in the U.S. I don't have a student Visa as it is not required for Canadians - we only need to show an approved I-20 form at the border - and I'm trying to figure out if and where I can work. I'm employed by the University as a TA but I'm not sure if I can work anywhere off campus or how that might be done. Any thoughts?

A dear friend of mine desperately wants to improve his life and follow his dreams. I live in a far freer country so I'm unsure of exactly how best to show him support sometimes. I want to tell him not to give up hope and to work hard towards his goals, that it's the only way they'll happen. Sometimes I wonder if maybe I'm just being an overly optimistic American, though. I want to help him in any way I can, but we take for granted the possibilities we have here. Things are far different in his country than in mine and I know that. So I feel a bit useless as support. Insights, please... [more inside]
