Hoping for a gut check from my fellow legal practitioners on the steps forward on a disputing I am having with a contractor in DC/VA. IAAL. YANML. Prior to signing a contract for installation of a product a few years ago, I inquired with the salesperson, in writing, as to how much a [service] would cost if [situation] occurs. Salesperson responds by writing stating it would not be more than $X. Relying on this, I sign the contract. The contract does not contain this specific price quote, but it also does not have a merger/integration clause. Two years later, [situation] has occurred. I require the stated service. Company is quoting $5X for service and says the original e-mail by the salesperson cannot be honored because salesperson does not work with the company any longer. I have a general idea of how to proceed with this, but I want to see if there's anything I'm missing and how my fellow practitioners would proceed. [more inside]
My wife, baby (18 months), and I will be spending a couple of nights in Richmond, VA on the weekend of Oct 28. Looking for a good part of town to stay in. [more inside]
About a year ago, I passed my professional engineer (PE) exam for environmental engineering in Virginia. I know that, in order to renew my license, I have to complete so many continuing education (CE) hours every two years. However, the Virginia Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA) is not all that specific about what activities can be used towards CE credits or what type of documentation is expected. I haven't had much luck sifting through their webpage and have gotten unhelpful responses the couple times I have tried to call their office (when asked for information, they emailed me random information about architects). Does anyone have experience with tackling continuing education for engineers in the state of Virginia or elsewhere?
Short version: We’ll be visiting just outside Richmond Virginia for 5 days in October, and trying to figure out a way to get a few hours a day of childcare (either nanny or daycare) for our toddler. Looking for tips/suggestions/resources/caveats/strategies. [more inside]
We are heading to a wedding next weekend and taking the scenic route - stopping to see/hike in Harper's Ferry, driving Skyline Drive, and touring Monticello. Where should we eat along the way? [more inside]
This is doing quite well on the SE side of my house in Northern Virginia. Some are over 6ft/2m tall. What is it?
I would like to spend a long weekend or perhaps full week, in mid to late October, alone or semi-alone in nature. An individual retreat that involves yoga, hiking, meditation and contemplation (and maybe even homesteading activities), but is not overly "woo" or religious, sounds ideal to me. Where can I do this within a (maximum) 3-4 hour drive of DC? [more inside]

I live and work in Blacksburg, Virginia, a good place to live without a car, which I don't own due to primarily budget, but also health/anxiety issues. And that's perfectly fine for city living, but there ain't no bus routes to the Appalachian Trail or to the Cascades waterfall or the dozens of other outdoor places I'd like to visit and hike and explore. What would y'all suggest I do? [more inside]
The other day I drove past a Squirrel Level Road in Virginia. Where did the name come from? [more inside]
I need a new pair of spectacles and I live in Richmond, VA. Where should I go? My preference is for black, heavy, Michael Stipe glasses. I had a pair a couple of years ago, but lost them. I would prefer to deal with a brick-and-mortar store. [more inside]
(Typing that just hit me like a ton of bricks.) I'll be 29 later this month and I have five days off from work to enjoy some birthday antics. What should I do with myself? [more inside]
Looking for non-permit street parking in Clarendon, VA. Is there any? Friends are visiting and just need a place to leave the car, that won't cost $20 per night or require moving it every few hours.
I'm looking for a secluded beachfront cabin to rent for 2-3 nights in the southeastern US (ideally the Carolinas, but Virginia, Georgia, and even Northern Florida would be a possibility). Essentials are: 1) on a sandy beach with swimmable water, and 2) as secluded from other people as possible. Budget would be less than $300/night. [more inside]
I want to teach high school social studies for the upcoming (2015-2016) school year in Virginia, USA. I would have to be hired with a provisional license. How can I make this happen/what are the chances of this happening? [more inside]
My mother recently had a wretched time at Reston hospital. She doesn't want to go back there, nor do the rest of us. We'd like to have a plan about a better hospital to go to the next time there is an emergency. We've looked at Yelp, etc., but would like some more filtered insight into our options in the area.

I currently live in DC and am moving to NC on August 13th. I am planning to purchase a new car at some point in the next two months. Ideally, it would be before the move because that means a safer and roomier ride down. But I can't figure out if we might have to pay a bunch of fees twice - and can't get a straight answer from dealers. [mi] [more inside]
Hi out there! I'm moving away at the end of May from Charlottesville, Virginia for a new job on the west coast and I have a lease that goes until July 30. My landlord has kindly offered to terminate my lease early, and has said that it is on the condition that he finds someone else to take over the apartment. However! [more inside]

We are looking for a nice place to study in the mornings. Should be within a mile of the Rosslyn metro stop. Preferably they should be open by 7:00am, reasonably quiet, have wifi, and a comfortable temperature. We like Capital City Cheesecake, if that helps. Is the Plaza Branch Library decent? [more inside]
My wife and the kids are flying out to Virginia on Sunday as part of Thanksgiving visit with relatives. They have a couple free days to do tourist stuff and she was wondering whether it would make sense to spend one of them visiting Colonial Williamsburg. The kids are 9, 6, and 3, and they have enjoyed visits to small historical sites run by our state historical society. Has anyone taken kids to Colonial Williamsburg? Would you recommend that others do so? Is it worth visiting even on a rainy day?
Me and my dad are going camping this weekend in the Wytheville, VA area. It's a compromise location with which neither of us are familiar. He's driving down, I'm busing up, and we'll be camping 2 nights. Does anyone have a favorite backcountry camping spot around there, maybe by a stream? (details follow) [more inside]
I - rather foolishly perhaps - registered for an upcoming triathlon, which will include an open water swim in a local lake. Like a lot of beginning triathletes I gather, I find the swimming portion the most intimidating so I've been taking some lap classes at nearby rec centers, etc. But I'd like to get some open water experience before race day. This is turning out to be the last great taboo. Skateboarding may not be a crime, but it sure looks like swimming is. What can I do? [more inside]

Asking for a friend who lives in Virginia: my friend's mother has had a chronic illness for many years, and over the past year her health has begun to steadily decline, and she has been phasing in and out of bouts of dementia. Lately the bad days seem to be getting more and more frequent. No one has power of attorney at the moment; I'm trying to help him get it in place ASAP. [more inside]
I'm taking my two daughters to see my family and we're driving, from central Pennsylvania to New Orleans. Here's the basic route. Where should we eat? What should we detour to see? It'll be a two or three day drive. Help us plan it.
I am moving from the Charlottesville, VA area to the Richmond, VA area this summer, and I need a new bank. Which facility was constructed first, the WVa American Water treatment plant, or the Freedom Industries chemical storage place? In other words, did WVAW "come to the nuisance," or did Freedom choose to build upstream from the water plant? what dates was each facility constructed? (and if Freedom came subsequently to WVAW, did the latter protest at the time?)

I moved from Fairfax County (VA) to Arlington County (VA) and I've been dragging my feet with updating my voter registration card. Just now, I updated it online but it seems that it will be too late to process. My DMV license is updated to reflect my new residence in Arlington. Can I vote here in Arlington for the 2013 VA Gubernatorial Race? What are my options?
I need to organize a pub quiz in Richmond VA for next February in advance of a wedding. Can you recommend venues that might welcome the crowd? The pub quiz would be open to the public.
Because of the sequester, my plans for a birthday hike of Old Rag are out. Looking for something within a 2 or 3 hour drive of the D.C. area for Monday, October 14th. Have extensive hiking experience so would like something with a fair amount of miles and am not afraid of difficulty. No climbing, though!
My neighbor (and friend) has been trying to get her drivers license and her friend has been letting her drive him around. Yesterday she was driving (with him in the car) back to her place. She clipped a car and took off the mirror. (You are not her lawyer....) [more inside]
Can anyone recommend a stream/river/lake or two within an hour of Leesburg, VA to go fly fishing this weekend? Push comes to shove I'll just drive up to Harper's Ferry and wade into the Potomac, but something a bit more secluded and slower flowing would be better.
Do you have any secret spots within an hour or so of Baltimore that you want to share with the entirety of the internets? Unlike previous AskMes, I don't want to go swimming, or deal with a billion tourists. I just want to go read a good book near the water for a day (ideally on a quiet beach, or in a park near a beach).
I have a ten-year-old boy staying with me for the next month in a Maryland suburb of DC. I would love to hear any and all suggestions for activities in the DC area (especially if anyone knows about any kind of baseball day camp or one day programs, anything baseball related). We have been having fun exploring the area but new ideas would be awesome. Thank you.
