Asking for a friend who lives in Virginia: my friend's mother has had a chronic illness for many years, and over the past year her health has begun to steadily decline, and she has been phasing in and out of bouts of dementia. Lately the bad days seem to be getting more and more frequent. No one has power of attorney at the moment; I'm trying to help him get it in place ASAP. [more inside]

I'm taking my two daughters to see my family and we're driving, from central Pennsylvania to New Orleans. Here's the basic route

Some family is going to be at a conference in the Asheville area in May, and we've decided to meet up somewhere between Asheville and Washington, DC for a weekend stayover. But none of us are very familiar with the area, so we're not sure where to go. Recommendations from locals would be much appreciated! [more inside]

Here is the "Question"
This is a two part legal/renters rights & money question.

the information listed on the notice is inaccurate.

Which facility was constructed first, the WVa American Water treatment plant, or the Freedom Industries chemical storage place? In other words, did WVAW "come to the nuisance," or did Freedom choose to build upstream from the water plant? what dates was each facility constructed? (and if Freedom came subsequently to WVAW, did the latter protest at the time?)

I moved from Fairfax County (VA) to Arlington County (VA) and I've been dragging my feet with updating my voter registration card. Just now, I updated it online but it seems that it will be too late to process. My DMV license is updated to reflect my new residence in Arlington. Can I vote here in Arlington for the 2013 VA Gubernatorial Race? What are my options?

Have extensive hiking experience so would like something with a fair amount of miles and am not afraid of difficulty. No climbing, though!

Can anyone recommend a stream/river/lake or two within an hour of Leesburg, VA to go fly fishing this weekend? Push comes to shove I'll just drive up to Harper's Ferry and wade into the Potomac, but something a bit more secluded and slower flowing would be better.

Do you have any secret spots within an hour or so of Baltimore that you want to share with the entirety of the internets? Unlike previous AskMes, I don't want to go swimming, or deal with a billion tourists. I just want to go read a good book near the water for a day (ideally on a quiet beach, or in a park near a beach).

I would love to hear any and all suggestions for activities in the DC area (especially if anyone knows about any kind of baseball day camp or one day programs, anything baseball related). We have been having fun exploring the area but new ideas would be awesome. Thank you.

I was given some photographs of old relatives that were found in a box in my great-grandfather's house after he passed away. All but one photo is someone I can identify. I have no information on that one photo, which is of an old woman standing on a path in front of a farmhouse. I'd like to at least get an idea of the era so I can begin narrowing down the identify of the woman. [more inside]

Looking for a rustic wedding venue in the DC/Virginia/MD (and potentially WV) region where the soon-to-be Mrs. Oneironaut and I can take over for the whole weekend, roast whole lambs, have a county fair atmosphere, and have the music and dancing go all night. We want to be able to control the space, have a house and potentially a few cabins available, and be within 30 minutes of a town with hotels. Any leads appreciated! And, this question is similar to this one
, but we're anticipating more like 150 people, and don't need to be within an hour of the airport.

Sisters and I want to meet somewhere in the middle, between Connecticut and eastern Tennessee. We would like something that is a reasonable drive from each state. We are looking for a quaint type town, maybe a bed and breakfast, walking to restaurants and browsing antique stores? Not spending too much money would be nice. Close to the 81. Was thinking about northeastern VA-ish. We will be going end of July for 2 nights.

DC-area-history-filter! I'm about to move back to the US, where I will be either in DC or North Virginia (working in Ashburn, specifically). I like having a sense of the history that contributed to the physical environment around me. Why is this town here, who built what building, why, and what does the allegory in the decoration mean. Things like that. What books, articles, or whatever should I read to understand these qualities about my upcoming home?

I used to live in Virginia and now live in the UK. When I was in VA I was a state employee and paid into the Virginia Retirement System. I've recently been contacted by the VRS and it turns out I can get a refund on all my contributions. Yay! But - the form I have to fill in to authorise the refund is required to be acknowledged by a "VA notary public or other court official authorised to take acknowledgements".
Does anyone know if there's a Virginia notary public in the UK? Or can you get these things done remotely - which seems to go against the idea of a notary public...
