Any way to resolve a ticket (inspection sticker) before court date?

When I moved to New York from Massachusetts and registered my car here, I was told at the DMV that my MA inspection sticker would be valid until it expired. Today I was pulled over by a cop and issued a citation for not having a NYS inspection sticker. He told me that I could go to court and tell the judge that I was misinformed and they’d probably waive the fine. [more inside]

What to do about a HIPAA violation at my son's pediatrician office

I needed a copy of my son's immunization records for some travel we are planning this summer. I called his pediatrician's office, and they said they'd send them right away. 2 days later an envelope arrived addressed by hand, the home address was correct but the recipient name was wrong. I opened the envelope to find another child's immunization records. [more inside]

Condominium By-Laws Pets

My mother received two letters from her Condo association stating that she is in violation of a pet by-law for having me visit her at her home and bringing my dog(over 35 pounds). Here is the law as written: 10.8 A limit of one four legged animal, not weighing more than thirty-five (35) pounds is allowed per unit. I've spoken with the property management and they state that this law means no dogs over 35 pounds are allowed on property at all. As this law is written could that legally be in forced if i continue to visit with my dog? [more inside]

What is causing Parental Violation warnings on my entertainment?

Tried to play Avatar (PG 13) for the child via the DVD player and a sign came up saying Parental Violation. Three times. Tried a PG movie. No problem Tried an R movie. No problem. Never programmed for parental controls at any time. It's an old GE model, FWIW. Saves me from seeing Avatar, but I'm real curious what's going on here and fear for the future.

Why did the ticketing police officer recommend I plead not guilty to a moving violation?

I just ran a red light in Brooklyn and was pulled over by police. I was given a ticket and the officer urged me to plead not guilty and to attend the scheduled court date and pay the citation otherwise I'd be hit with 6 points to my license. Why did the officer recommend pleading not guilty? And what should I expect in a Brookly TVB court? [more inside]

Is there any way to keep the plants on my roof without violating any laws/codes in Brooklyn?

I have 15 medium-sized vegetable plants on my roof in Brooklyn, which is easily accessed via stairs (i.e. not through a hatch in the roof). The roof has been treated with that silver paint stuff and is surrounded by a metal railing. My landlord originally asked me to remove the plants for a "fire safety" inspection. I removed them but put them back the following day after the inspection. Today (several weeks later) I received a letter from my landlord stating that I had to permanently remove the plants because he received a violation for "illegally occupying the roof deck." I really don't want to get rid of my plants! Is there any way to keep them on my roof without technically violating any laws/codes??

What can an artist do about unauthorized commercial use of his artwork?

An artist friend of mine was surprised to see his artwork used without permission on a flier for a band. He had posted the artwork on his website. What can/should he do to stop the misuse? I know that he automatically holds a copyright on the work as its creator. (I have advised him to post watermarked versions of his work in the future to prevent future misuse.)
