Asking for a friend who's planning to press some old recordings to vinyl. He knows that album sides can range from 15-25 (even 30) minutes, but he wants to know what the optimum is. In other words, at what point does overall sound quality suffer and/or production challenges start to occur? [more inside]

My awesome father in law has amassed a huge collection of 45 records. He would really like a dedicated 45 player (so he can play them without using a converter). His birthday is coming up in a couple weeks. How can I find him a player that works, and how much should I expect to pay for it?

I think it's possible to put digital music onto vinyl albums at home with some device I saw advertised somewhere. But will doing this produce an anologue sound or a digital sound? Will it sound as rich as if the album had originally been on vinyl or will it sound emptier the way digital music does? I guess I'm basically asking if it's worth doing. I don't know technical stuff about stuff, so I hope my question makes sense!

Having spent years spent listening primarily to MP3s and Internet radio, we've been thinking about taking the big, clunky, 90s-era stereo components off of our living room shelves. However, one of those components is a turntable, and we'd like to have the option of occasionally playing our vinyl. We were thinking of a retro-styled portable turntable like this Crosley
, but it looks like the non-weighted tonearm and styli aren't so hot. Are there any portable, suitcase-style turntables out there with decent tonearms that we can fit with a good cartridge? Our primary concern is that our records stay in good condition.

I found and immediately lost a link the other day that talked about a device that made mp3s sound richer, deeper, perhaps like vinyl (or at least not as compressed as they truly are). It was a rather simple device and the article talked about one brand as low as $150. I don't expect anyone to find the exact page especially as I am not being too descriptive. It was on an audiophile site and was recommended...not one of those 'buy this cheapie/crap product that screws up your music' sort of thing. If anyone knows what I am talking about or has something else that they know that works for improving mp3 sound through stereo, I'm interested. Pardon me for the nebulous post. It is the best my brain can recall. Thanks for your techie/audiophile input.

I picked up my first record player (Rega P1) and the sound seems off
, like it is being played in a large hall. Every album I play has them same, full bass feel, even when I turn off the subwoofer. What's going on? [more inside]

As a 10 year old child I went with my mother, myself and my 7 year old brother went to EJ Korvette's on 46th Street to meet an alien. Well, actually it was Leonard Nimoy (in full makeup and costume) as Mr. Spock. It was 1969 and he had just come out with his new album Mr Spock's Music From Outer Space.
We were in a crush of people. My brother was having trouble with the crowd. The store was packed. Finally my mother snapped and dragged us out of the store screaming, "My son is suffocating, get out of the way!"
Anyway, after hysteria by yours truly, we went back. The crowd was gone. Someone took the album from my hands and sliced the covering plastic with a razor. I didn't care. I was looking up at Mister SPOCK from my favoite show of all times!
I wanted to say something, anything. But my throat was dry. My brain useless. He signed the album. He signed it... Spock in cursive.
I still have this album today.
Is it worth anything? Other than my memories and the original price? Leonard. I love your photos. Call me...

Can anyone tell me about the multiple covers for Miles Davis' Jack Johnson
LP? Before today, I'd only seen the iconic arched Miles blowing trumpet cover, but, today, bought a vinyl version that has a cover illustration of Jack Johnson in a canary-yellow car surrounded by women.
Can anyone tell me anything about this (alternate) cover?
