During our upcoming (and first) trip to Europe, we will be traveling from Vienna to Salzburg, then on to Hallstatt in the Alps. We would like to know whether it makes
more sense to rent a car in Vienna and drive to Hallstatt, or take the train to Salzburg, then rent a car.
Questions:
1. Which option is less expensive?
2. If we go by car, what are some things to see between Vienna and the Salzburg area (to be visited in the one day of travel)?
3. Do we need to apply for a special permit to rent a car with an American driver's license?
4. and as long as I have your ear, any hotel or pension recommendations for the city of Salzburg or Vienna? We have most of our stay booked already, but there are few nights left to fill.

I'm a big fan of sausage - all kinds of sausage. Street vendor sausage, fancy sausage, pork sausage, chicken sausage, beef sausage. I am traveling to Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna for a few weeks in July. Where can I get the best (for whatever definition of "best" suits you) sausages, whether it be a quick lunch at a vendor between sights or a sit-down dinner?

Restaurant Recommendations in Vienna VA (near Jammin' Java)? My wife and myself have tickets for Willie Nile at Jammin' Java on Saturday night. We've decided to call this Saturday evening our Valentine's Day and make a night of it by getting a decent dinner before the show.
I know there are a gazillion restaurants in the general area - what's a good non-chain choice for dinner for 2 in the $40-50 neighborhood? My wife doesn't like sushi, so that is out. I'm familiar with the chili at Jammin' Java, but hunched over a folding chair trying to eat chili without spilling it isn't the dinner scene we are looking for Sat night; no matter how damn good the chili might be.

I've been put in charge of figuring all this out, but apart from the obvious tourist things I don't know what's good. I guess I'm looking for more off-the-beaten-path stuff.
Thank you!

How can I get my hands on a Vienna phonebook from circa 1938? I will be spending a weekend in Vienna next month, and I would love to see the apartment where my late grandfather lived before fleeing the Nazis. Unfortunately, nobody in the family knows the address, and there aren't any letters or other documents to provide it. Things are also complicated by the fact that I won't be visiting on a weekday, so any archives that might have this information will presumably be closed. Plus, I don't speak German. Am I out of luck, or is there any way to track this information down in the next few weeks?
