The videos need to work across all browsers and devices. I'm having a hard time finding good advice. Can you help?
Trying to think/work through my conflicted feelings on this. My awesome and creative kids (8 and 11) are getting into making videos, and of course they want to put them on YouTube. They're all excited about being able to check back and see how many views they've got - my daughter wants to do reviews of YA books, my son wants to do a video blog where he reviews sodas and candy and fun stuff like that. But I just don't know if I feel safe uploading them. [more inside]

Hi So once upon a time I saw a music video in which will.i.am and fergie apperead and will.i.am was driving through what I thought was Japan. Has anyone an idea which song this could be? Regards marius
The dance and visuals in this video continue to represent for me the summit of a certain kind of excellence after several years of repeated viewing. [more inside]
My wife has heard the first track to the Assassin's Creed soundtrack SOMEWHERE before. She is not a gamer. Any idea what video she heard it in? [more inside]
I work at a small company that wants to get into producing short video clips. I have been asked to figure out a basic lighting setup for filming individual people talking to the camera in front of a green screen. What do I need to know about video lighting? [more inside]
I've been asked to establish two simultaneous live video streams and have been given the following equipment: a new PC tower running Windows 7, an Osprey 230 capture card with Viewcast's Simulstream active. Now what? [more inside]
I've been working on a computer game for a while. Apparently, a whole lot of people use YouTube videos as the primary means to find out about games. This is utterly alien to me, so I could really use some advice. [more inside]
Now that SPOI's Youtube Options has gone subscription-only, what options are there for downloading Youtube videos in Chrome or Firefox? Userscripts.org seems to have finally bitten the dust, and the scripts it had were out of date.
What are some subtle or lesser-known examples of current-day real-world USA being a dystopia? [more inside]
A friend of mine is starting a research project on dance videos (which certainly doesn't mean just ones created by professionals - so e.g. Saudi penguin dances are just as interesting as Gangnam Style) that have gone viral on Youtube or other online platforms. Many examples may comprise of both professional and amateur creation e.g. Happy . The key thing is that dance is the *main* reason for the viral spread. What are the most interesting and influential (or otherwise noteworthy!) examples of this in your experience? Thanks for your suggestions!!

I'm trying to compile a list of music videos from the 80s (early 90s is fine too) that reference communism, with, for example, use of hammer and sickle imagery, or the like. The more the direct the reference the better. Bonus points for synth-pop. [more inside]
My stepdad is ill and has some non-fun things coming up (surgery and chemo). I'd like to send him light, interesting videos or picture-heavy articles about his interests, mostly exotic birds and pirates. Can you suggest some? [more inside]
There's a video I'm trying to find - like a flash animation or maybe a youtube thing, from 5-ish ~ 10-ish years ago. All I remember is that it had like, geometric shapes that moved around, and the narration was a stream of consciousness thing, and the only part of the narration I remember is "this is why you drink." It was the kind of thing I'd expect to see on Boing Boing, maybe. Anyone have any idea at all what I might be talking about?
I find a good Let's Play to be soothing and engaging. I like Minecraft best, but am willing to consider other games that have a similar vibe. I am interested in finding good videos that are relatively mature and fun. I would also consider good tutorial series. Currently I have been watching stuff put out by Paul Soares Jr, and I like it. I have not enjoyed anything by stampylongnose because it is too frantic and clownish. I have not found my way into Far Lands or Bust, but am willing to give it a try. Basically I like watching someone go about their business and talk about whatever while they do it. Do you have recommendations? Can you say what you like about your recommended titles?
So how are all the cool people making home movies these days, if they're not recording off their phone? And how are they storing and sharing such movies? [more inside]
This morning someone posted a sweet gaming room to reddit (picture has since been taken down), and it made me think, "gee, I'm an adult now, I can do anything I want!" And since I'm nothing if not impulsive, I now really want to buy a video game console. For the first time ever. If I use both hands, I still have leftover fingers when counting the number of times I've played a video game in my life. Show me your ways, geeks of MetaFilter! [more inside]
Looking for a recommendation of a video camera (and anything else necessary like external microphone etc) that is inexpensive but good enough that I won't regret not spending more money. If I could spend $200 that would be great, but if you tell me I'll kick myself for not spending $300 then I can do that. [more inside]
I’m trying to remember/find this great video made that summarizes the rules of a New York artist’s workshop. The rules that I can remember are a couple shots where the narrator says “The correct response when someone asks you to perform a task is ‘I understand’. If there are parts to the task that are unclear to you, the correct response is ‘I do not understand’.” [more inside]
I'm trying to find a trippy music video featuring a train. The whole video follows the train for the most part. As the music gets more elaborate, the train gets a bunch of effects including changing its color and brightness. Another music video by the same band involved a fake PSA or television broadcast that devolves into a song. Does any of this ring a bell? I think the band was electronic, but don't quote me on that.
I wrote a story for an online women's magazine, and it was picked up for a Canadian television network. They'll tape me as I'm telling my story, and then they'll re-enact it with actors. If you've ever seen Investigation Discovery episodes, it'll be like that, but funny. How do I get through this? [more inside]
I'm hoping there's a really simple answer to this, but I'm stumped. I can't seem create the right HTML code to embed Facebook video from 2012 into a blog post. [more inside]
Since the first Nintendo game console came out in the 80's, I can recall everyone I know (myself included) blowing into the game cartridge and/or the Nintendo itself when something went wrong (freezing, etc.). What is the premise for doing this (I saw other people do it, and sometimes it seemed to work, so that's why I did, thinking maybe dustiness/debris was the issue...), and is there any legit evidence that this really fixes things?

What can I show children to inspire and wow them? I teach children aged between 9 and 11. I'm putting on a webinar for a bunch of Kickstarter backers (around 2000), which content-wise will include a 2 hour lecture and some Q&A. While I have a lot of presentation experience (I've given this particular lecture ~ 6 times as a part of a workshop series I run), I've never done anything online like this before and could use suggestions on how to do this well. I'm particularly interested in recommendations for webinar services that can handle that kind of bandwidth, whether it'd be a good idea to hire staff on that day for video/moderating questions, that kind of thing. I saw some funny 2 minute video basically a fake advertisement for some presumably made up company (something like rockman automatronics). The guy toured a room talking about how great the products were, but using super scientific sounding (most of probably made up) words, like "panfandeled ding alarm", and that's what made it funny, because you couldn't understand almost anything he said. At the end it said something like "you can find our rockman automatronics wherever fine electronics are sold" or something like that. Bonus points if you can source who made the funny video and why
We have our windows 7 computer organized by user, and the folder system is a mess. I want to be able to browse photos, and videos, by one simple criteria, date taken. For example, want to see every picture and video on my PC That was taken on July 19, 2013. I don't want it to be tricked by the save date, the edit date, what folder it's in, or which camera was used. Only the date I snapped the shot. Fantastic would be some kind of timeline that you can very quickly scroll thru and it shows you some kind of date display where you're at.

Hi - in a pinch, I need to use my iPhone to feed live video to a projector. I have a VGA adapter, so I can mirror my camera, but I can't feed "clean" video without all the on-screen camera controls, etc. I feel like the answer is easy, but I'm flummoxed. Is there an app or way to get just plain camera output without the controls? thanks!
I'm tagging along on a research trip to a biological field station in the Bahamas. While I'm there, I'd like to use my iPad to shoot some video of the researchers doing their respective things. How would you turn an iPad 2 into a lean, mean, field-video-recording machine? [more inside]

I'm thinking about upgrading my camera from a 10-year-old point-and-shoot to take photos of an imminent new baby (and eventual child-on-the-go), but the options are crazy-making. Camcorder, point-and-shoot, or interchangeable lenses? Video, pocketability, or picture quality? What did you find was the best option? I already have an iPhone 5s that I will use for quick snaps. Hello! I am looking for a provider that will allow me to a) Host tutorial videos b) Sell streaming videos to customers. Think of websites like lynda.com - but on a much smaller scale. I've found one provider viddler.com - no luck yet finding others. Mayhaps the hive mind has an idea? Thanks!

I want to make a music video for my band, and invite people to send us their own home video of a certain kind of public event for us to include. Are there any legal issues here? Please explain them to me like I'm a clueless idiot because, when it comes to film licencing, I am. [more inside]
I want to get into video making and was wondering where people get their music from. I've noticed that some YouTube partners go to SoundCloud to pick up remixes of licensed songs to get past the copyright infringement--is that okay? [more inside]
I'm working on a load of small projects for the education arm of a small charity. In order to make the training more interesting, I have been tasked with finding out what can be done in the realm of screencasts. As we don't have any kind of budget, I thought we might be able use something like Camtasia, which our web developer has on his machine. Problem is, I'm pretty sure we only have one licence and I'm even surer that it's going to be a struggle to get anyone to agree to pay for any new software right now. Looking at the tutorials, I was thinking of starting (relatively) simple and maybe using a mix of Powerpoint and animations to enhance an audio lecture. I therefore have multiple parts to this question: 1) Is there a free or really cheap alternative to Camtasia that I should be looking at? or 2) Is Camtasia worth fighting for? If it is, I am willing to learn how to do awesome things with it. 3) Am I even looking at the right kind of software to do this? Thanks very much!
For my job I need to make a short video that graphically illustrates an iPhone app and its functionality. Are there any tools or sites out there that can let me do this as nicely as possible? I'm thinking of something similar to App.io except I need something more automated and presentable. Something like a Powerpoint presentation except for an app with text and animations/video.
I want to make a series of instructional programming videos. I'm reasonably happy that I have all the moving parts lined up - I know what I want to cover, I have the examples and material ready, I've figured out how to make high-quality video recordings of my desktop and I've got a nice USB microphone. But if there's one thing that my brief forays into video editing have taught me, it's that it can be incredibly time-consuming. Given that I plan on making ~10 hours of content for my first batch of videos, I'd like some advice on doing this efficiently. Specific questions inside. [more inside]

A friend is trying to connect her PC (Windows 7) to a projector for video and a receiver for audio. The projector does not support HDMI, so she's using VGA. The receiver does have HDMI, so she's using that for audio. If she doesn't plug in the projector, the audio plays fine. As soon as she connects the VGA, HDMI audio is no longer an option in the Sound settings and audio starts playing through the laptops built in speakers. Is there a way to have HDMI for audio and VGA for video at the same time? [more inside]
