This year for Christmas, I'd like to get my parents the gift of converting all their VHS tapes to digital format. I'm a sometime video editor and effects artist, so I need a solution that's a) cheap, b) not too involved, workflow-wise, and c) meets my video nerd half's demand for quality. What's the best solution that fits all three?

I'm producing a parody of Deal or No Deal. Since assembling an audience of sufficient size is beyond my means, I am planning to occasionally show audience shots from an original episode of Deal or No Deal. Does this qualify as fair use?

Digital video workflow question: I'm editing a greenscreened music video, and wish to do a rough cut in Final Cut, then move the project into After Effects to do compositing. However, the only automated means of conversion the project is Automatic Duck's plugin, the price of which exceeds my budget. What's the best workflow for moving a sequence between the two applications under these conditions?

DV / Final Cut Pro question: We just upgraded cameras to a Panasonic DVX100B, largely for the ability to shoot in 24P. However, imported footage still appears interlaced in FCP, and it's unclear to me what our new configuration should be. How will we need to change our workflow in order to edit in 24P? (More specific inside.)
On an unrelated note, we just imported a tape which appears to be corrupted. Can it be salvaged? (More details inside.)

What's the most effective and broadly compatible way to swap embedded Quicktime movies on a web page? I've written my own JavaScript to do so, but it doesn't work on certain (a minority of) browsers, and it's a bit slow. Does anyone have experience doing this?

How do DVD manufacturers convince DVD player manufacturers to cripple their product by include region restrictions? And why isn't the high cost of region-free DVD players considered a form of price-fixing?

I have some video on a DVD that I want to edit in Final Cut Pro. What's the best intermediate codec to use? I don't have space for uncompressed video, and the rest of my footage is DV-quality, so I can afford a bit of quality loss.

I am in the process of creating a DVD of my sketch comedy group's work. This means I have to go through about fifty DV tapes in order to find the ones which have completed sketches rather than footage on them. In addition, many of the tapes are unlabelled. Is there some method or program which can scan a tape quickly and give me an overall impression of what's on it? (I'm thinking via thumbnails, but I presume there are other ways of doing it.)
