My twelve-year-old son has aspirations of becoming a pro youtuber. He initially wants to do video game reviews and demonstrate in-game scenarios. This will involve screencasting while skyping with friends.
What resources can I point him to or advice do you have for getting started? What software and setup are most Youtubers using? He can recognize poorly done videos and wants to do something with decent production quality (bearing in mind it is for an audience of kid gamers). What are some of the key skills in video and audio he should start to pick up? What video formats and resolutions are best for Youtube? Are there places he can get free backing tracks? Are backing tracks even something to worry about? I'm quite knowledgable about computers in general but don't know what I don't know in this area.
I currently have him set up with a decent mic on a Mac Mini, Quicktime for recording, and iMovie for editing. I haven't purchased any screencasting software yet.

Trying to think/work through my conflicted feelings on this. My awesome and creative kids (8 and 11) are getting into making videos, and of course they want to put them on YouTube. They're all excited about being able to check back and see how many views they've got - my daughter wants to do reviews of YA books, my son wants to do a video blog where he reviews sodas and candy and fun stuff like that. But I just don't know if I feel safe uploading them. [more inside]

Now that SPOI's Youtube Options has gone subscription-only, what options are there for downloading Youtube videos in Chrome or Firefox? Userscripts.org seems to have finally bitten the dust, and the scripts it had were out of date.

A friend of mine is starting a research project on dance videos (which certainly doesn't mean just ones created by professionals - so e.g. Saudi penguin dances
are just as interesting as Gangnam Style
) that have gone viral on Youtube or other online platforms. Many examples may comprise of both professional and amateur creation e.g. Happy
. The key thing is that dance is the *main* reason for the viral spread. What are the most interesting and influential (or otherwise noteworthy!) examples of this in your experience? Thanks for your suggestions!!

I find a good Let's Play to be soothing and engaging. I like Minecraft
best, but am willing to consider other games that have a similar vibe. I am interested in finding good videos that are relatively mature and fun. I would also consider good tutorial series. Currently I have been watching stuff put out by Paul Soares Jr
, and I like it. I have not enjoyed anything by stampylongnose
because it is too frantic and clownish. I have not found my way into Far Lands or Bust
, but am willing to give it a try. Basically I like watching someone go about their business and talk about whatever while they do it. Do you have recommendations? Can you say what you like about your recommended titles?

My programming knowledge is tiny, but I am sure this could be done super super simply with a script loaded in the browser. Perhaps there's better solution. Any ideas? [more inside]

I am making a video composed of still photos that I'm finding on the internet. I want to put the final video on YouTube, so I'm converting them into 16:9 aspect ratio because I've been told that that's what YouTube needs in order to fill the whole screen with no black bars. Speaking purely hypothetically, of course--imagine you took a scenic drive. You had a camera take a time-lapse of part of the journey. You stitch it together into a video, and want to post it on youtube. Let's also say that the visible speedometer sometimes displays speeds which are not, um, congruent to the legal speed limits. Looking for videos to create a youtube playlist to entertain a group of science-minded teenagers for about 30 min that are largely visual. Sound is fine but the bulk shouldn't be someone talking to the class like an instructor - visualizations are best - ideally they should look really, really cool. Class is engineering focused, but chemistry, robotics, wobbly bridges, comp-sci, biology, are all welcome. [more inside]

I tried YouTube but hit its "video is too long" limitation (the movies are 35 minutes and I really don't want to chop them up into 10 min chunks). Why is it that, when content providers go on DMCA takedown-sprees on YouTube, versions of the content that were visibly filmed off of a TV or other monitor often remain? Is this some kind of loophole, or do content providers choose not to go after low quality copies of copyrighted content?

I'm working on new finance-based startup in the Marietta, GA (just outside of Atlanta, GA) and I'd like to hire someone to come in do bi-weekly interviews of me and my team as we go through the process (kind of like the Robert Scoble interviews if you've ever seen them).
It's a pretty exciting time for us and our product and I've been told by many that we should start a blog or youtube channel to share our experiences. There's also an interesting personal piece that both me and the CEO would be interested in sharing and that I think a lot of young people would be interested in hearing.
The problem is that in the list of things we can spend our time doing, setting up equipment, doing the interviews, and editing the videos is low priority.
Can anyone recommend a company or how I can find an individual who would be interested in doing this for us?
