I really like video games in which I can collect and build things. Occasional combat is preferred, but I'd like to find games where that isn't the focus. Don't Starve was pretty much perfect. I'm pretty new to the whole genre and haven't played many games aside from RPGs before. What else might I like?

I'd like to learn more about video and digital games. I don't know where to start. I'm thinking--there must be bloggers, games writers, etc. who are writing about both classic video games and new releases? Who are they? [more inside]

I find a good Let's Play to be soothing and engaging. I like Minecraft
best, but am willing to consider other games that have a similar vibe. I am interested in finding good videos that are relatively mature and fun. I would also consider good tutorial series. Currently I have been watching stuff put out by Paul Soares Jr
, and I like it. I have not enjoyed anything by stampylongnose
because it is too frantic and clownish. I have not found my way into Far Lands or Bust
, but am willing to give it a try. Basically I like watching someone go about their business and talk about whatever while they do it. Do you have recommendations? Can you say what you like about your recommended titles?

This morning someone posted a sweet gaming room to reddit (picture has since been taken down), and it made me think, "gee, I'm an adult now, I can do anything I want
!" And since I'm nothing if not impulsive, I now really want to buy a video game console. For the first time ever. If I use both hands, I still have leftover fingers when counting the number of times I've played a video game in my life. Show me your ways, geeks of MetaFilter! [more inside]

Since the first Nintendo game console came out in the 80's, I can recall everyone I know (myself included) blowing into the game cartridge and/or the Nintendo itself when something went wrong (freezing, etc.). What is the premise for doing this (I saw other people do it, and sometimes it seemed to work, so that's why I did, thinking maybe dustiness/debris was the issue...), and is there any legit evidence that this really fixes things?

What are the best collaborative 2-player video games? My husband and I played Mario Galaxy 2 and it was perfect - he player Mario and I played "Starfy" and it worked out great. Are there more games like that for 2 players, where one player (aka me) can be kind of bad at video games? We have a Wii, some computers and are considering getting an Xbox One in the next few months..

My son, who will be turning 12 this month just told me that he wants a video game design software program for his birthday. He is already adept at website coding and has Microsoft's Kodu game design software, but finds Kodu very limiting. He is better at Photoshop than most of my colleagues at work and is generally very computer literate. His favorite game to play is Minecraft, so I expect that this is an example of the type of game that he would like to be able to create. [more inside]

I'm looking for examples of visual timelines in movies, video games, or fiction. Scenes where a span of time is represented metaphorically, preferably as a physical object, diagram, or action. A good example is this scene
from Me and You and Everyone We Know
in which two characters use a street as a visual metaphor for their potential relationship. [more inside]

I plan to spend 2 weeks in the west coast to one day move there. I am hoping to travel to various cities and explore video game related places. I want to network and talk to people from all video game walks of life, from indie developers to touring game studios. What places should I visit? What studios does tours?
I was planning to tour around late June, but should I center it around PAX Prime?

I know that some fairly recent video games, at least as recent as Ocarina of Time, have moments where characters (or physical signposts) inside of the game talk about the buttons that the player has to hit. I have a vague memory of this occurring in much older games, maybe characters in NES games saying "make sure you equip your weapon on the start menu" or things like that , but I can't locate them. Can anyone verify times where this happens?

I don't know ANYTHING about video games, but is there one where you "explore" or are otherwise in a rich "forest-type" environment -- i'm thinking it would be something a bit psychedelic or trippy, where a players aren't required to kill things, but discover/explore "LOTR/Avatar-ish" worlds, with hidden surprises perhaps....

Best DLC for PS3? Short and sweet. What's a good ~$10 download for the PS3? (I've got Braid and Noby Noby Boy). I'm thinking of maybe Pixel Junk Monsters, or Flower. Is there anything else I should look at? Basically the only genres I'm not into are Racing and Fighting, but I'll make exceptions for excellence.

I need a solid list of fun video games [esp. Xbox 360 and Wii] that will make (feel) smarter. For example: the game "Portal" absolutely stumped me at times and required me to literally contemplate -- but it was also fun. Half Life 2 had moments like that as well. [more inside]

Any other games for the 'cube that you can recommend that are first person shooter, whether it be horror/sci-fi like Resiident Evil 4 or maybe a crime game? (Kinda over the WW2 games)...Man, I am a cynical gamecuber, ay...thanks for you thoughts and suggestions. I really appreciate it as I try to get as much use out of this cube as I can.
