In 2000-2001, there was a video art exhibit at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. It featured neatly dressed American auctioneers talking in that high-speed almost unintelligible way, quickly reciting the bids to an audience that wasn't there, in front of a variety of landscapes. One was a stocky woman in a business skirt two-piece set walking slowly at dusk with a dark building in the back. Can you find the artist's work? Or point me to the artist?

Can you help me find a small, square format digital display that can play video or animated gifs?
I found a bunch of digital photo keyframes that would be perfect but they don't seem to display animated gifs or videos. Any ideas?

I'm looking for a certain video that I saw about half a year ago: it involves a man walking down the street, and being assaulted and repeatedly killed in gratuitously bloody ways by otherwise mundane objects on that street.

Looking for a video I saw on the internet before May 2008. It was an interview with a ton of post-processing, making it very surreal. Seeing this
image reminded me of the video.
I seem to remember the interviewer was an art student, or a student of the interviewee. The interviewee had been down on his luck, and it seemed as if the interview was happening in a soup kitchen or hostel. I associate two words with the interviewee: "video art", but I can't think of any sort of title he might have.

It's becoming increasingly common in the art world to see various forms of multi-channel video: works or installations in which video plays back on more than 1 screen at a time. If I wanted to create a 2-channel video piece, what technical means would be available to me to play back both video channels in sync with each other?

I'm looking for film recommendations. Films (of any length) that use approach their subject matter in abstract or otherwise unusual ways. Some of my favorites in that vein are
Koyaanisqatsi and
Baraka,
Outside In,
Powers of 10,
Gantz Graf,
Der Lauf Der Dinge,
C'etait un Rendezvous,
Fast, Cheap, and out of Control, and
The Fourth Dimension. Things like
this that, in their own weird way, impart some understanding. Bonus points for no dialog.

What's the artist/title of the video art piece in where the artist takes old public domain movie and slowly scrubs through the footage? I remember seeing a piece about 6 years ago where it's a family scene, and the father is spanking the daughter, and the video artist scrubs the footage back/forth repetitively. I know it's a long shot, and I've seen other artists do the same thing with similar footage (info on these artists is helpful as well.)

All this talk on flickr lately of "long photos" reminded me of a VERY "long photo" I saw in SFMOMA probably around a year ago... it was a scene at a cafe, with someone at a piano, a man and woman talking, one holding a cigarette, and a couple of other people, all frozen for at least five minutes... the most noticeable movement was cigarette smoke trailing up into the air. Does anyone know who that was by, what it was called, and whether I can find it online?

Please help me determine the best software (windows) for an interactive video/video game art project. I'd like to have participants use a video game controller to create a realtime animation by cycling through different sprites and "drawing" their paths on a single scene.
Or better yet - where can I find someone skilled in programming who might want to collaborate on such a project?
I can't seem to determine whether to look at game-construction apps or interactive video apps (vvvv, Processing, etc.)

How can I, an American, get money to travel to Japan? - Ideally I'd like to go through arts & humanities grants, cultural exchange programs, or visiting artist/musician programs, but other forms of travel funding assistance would be great too.
Bonus mefi: how can an American musician (electronic, pop, club) find venues, promoters, DJ's, clubnights, etc, that can lead to a performance while visiting Japan/Tokyo.?

I'm the co-producer of over 30 short films that are intended for cell phone and internet distribution. Rather than rent a theater for the premiere, I'd like to have a space, such as an art gallery, that will house five to seven video stations where guests can sample these short videos at their leisure.

Video camera rental advice: I'm looking to make an exceedingly simple, short video (an art project, if you will) and I'm looking to rent a fairly high quality camera to do it with. The condition is that I need a camera that can function reasonably (I'm not expecting miracles, here, but I don't want horribly washed-out, grainy business) in a very low-light situation. I'm applying for a small grant to do this, and I can't afford more than maybe $200 for a day's rental, $250 tops.

Years ago at school, I remember a video on Afro-Futurism. More than one instructor screened the video for my classes, so I've seen it a handful of times - but I can't remember the title, or where I can find it. I'm 90% sure it featured Kodwo Eshun extensively, as a "time traveler" who was researching the roots of Afro-Futurism and technology. It was focusing on music, mostly.

Are subliminal messages illegal? I'm looking for citations, not vague impressions or urban legends (which so far is all I have to go on -- Google has not been helpful). I'm thinking of creating/commissioning a video project that will involve projection of subliminal images and/or words. The audience would be told that this was happening -- but not what the content of the messages was.
