My 2-year-old cat is at the veterinarian’s office overnight. I’m afraid she may not have much time left. I’m looking for more information than I’ve got so far so I have a better idea of what I’m dealing with. [more inside]
About half an hour ago I saw my dog lounging in the liner of my guitar case, and I thought, aw, how cute. Then I saw that she had been chewing, and swallowing small amounts of my Herco HE360 guitar humidifier. [more inside]
I've got a female rat that needs to be spayed. My vet office gave me an estimate of $560. This seems way higher than I would expect (and I'm no stranger to vet bills, having taken care of many rats over the years -- but I've never done a spay). Is this a reasonable estimate, or is something wrong here? [more inside]
My cat is sneezing a lot after two courses of antibiotics and I'm unsure how to proceed, given that I don't entirely trust the veterinary practice I use in terms of pushing for expensive tests and treatments. Could the cat just have allergies? Do I just need to suck it up and go to this vet again? [more inside]
My veterinarian has recently started using "healing lasers" as part of dental treatments, among other things. The information they provided said that the laser is used outside the animal's mouth, and it... somehow penetrates and reduces pain and inflammation? I'm not real clear on how it's supposed to work, and it kind of sounds like a more science-y version of crystals and chanting to me. Is this a real thing? [more inside]
I saw a dog get hit and injured on the highway. What should/could I have done? Unpleasantness inside (no gore or death). [more inside]
Photo 1 Photo 2 For the past two months my American Bulldog has had a sore on her right paw. It's a small bump that will occasionally leak or bleed since it irritates her. [more inside]
Sooner than any of us would like, we're going to have to put one of our cats to sleep. I've never done this before. Looking for a Durham, NC area vet who can come to our home, and for a pet cremation service. [more inside]
Artemis is an awesome cat in Durham/Chapel Hill, NC, who walks, runs, and jumps, but not as well as she should. One vet, in March, found nothing wrong; another, in June, saw she was walking oddly and said to wait a while to see if it got better on its own. Now I'm looking for a vet with expertise or interest in feline musculo-skeletal issues for the next steps. [more inside]
Several of our dog's incisors were starting to come loose, so our vet recommended pulling between 3-5 of them. Today was surgery day, and they ended up pulling 8 teeth! I'm not so much concerned about the aesthetics, but should we be worried about anything in particular with him having lost almost all of his front teeth? [more inside]
Hi, I'm looking for a good, affordable veterinarian for two dogs in LA near Midcity/Midwilshire/Koreatown. Personal experiences especially welcome. Obligatory photo in comments!
I've been in the area a couple years now, and my vet experience for my cats has been less than satisfactory. And the sticker shock! I adore my cats, but damn. I am in the Arlington area, but am willing to drive into the surrounding suburbs. Thanks in advance.
We are curious if anyone has had luck with alternatives to surgery for Cherry Eye in a puppy (he's a maltese, shi tzu mix)? or if no, what we should expect to spend on surgery for the little guy? [more inside]
Our cat is terrified of strangers to the point of serious violence. (We have both owned reasonably shy and standoffish cats before. This one is worse than any other cat we've known — the bites and scratches he gives people who pick him up are sometimes not just warning nips but serious attacks. We are almost certain he was abused before we adopted him, for this and other reasons.) We need to find a vet in Austin, TX where we can take him. We have already been asked not to return to Animal Trustees, the discount vet clinic in town, because he clawed a vet tech there, so we are worried that he will be unwelcome other places as well. Suggestions? [more inside]
It is possible that my dog may be diagnosed with a serious medical condition. We're waiting on confirmation now. Survival rates for this condition, even with aggressive surgery and chemotherapy, are low and measured in months. Although it's not about the money, a full course of treatment will be $10,000 or more. Really though we don't want to see him suffer for months and he is in no pain now. How do we tell this to the vet?
Do I need to take my recently-acquired formerly-stray kitten to the vet for a check-up or anything? She had fleas but we washed them off and put a flea collar on her, and they haven't returned. Other than that she seems in good health, and I'm wondering if there's any reason to take her to a vet or not. (I can get her spayed and vaccinated for really cheap, but, a vet visit costs a lot more...)
We live in the greater Boston area. We are facing the decision to put our very elderly black lab down, probably within the next few days. He can't walk and moving him at all causes terrible pain. We live in a 2nd floor walk-up with even more stairs down to the street. He is very heavy: 95 lbs. Bringing him to the vet to be put down would cause him awful pain, so we want to find a vet who will come to our house to do it. Our regular vet won't make a house call. I actually found a place that will cremate him, if we bring his body there ourselves, for a reasonable rate. But I can't find a vet that will come to our house for less than $350. We simply cannot afford this. Any recommendations?
Family dog overseas has the disease Mange. Need more information around a possible cure for it. [more inside]
Back in July, my 11 year old cat was tentatively diagnosed with possible early renal failure. This past Saturday, however, she had another round of bloodwork and urinalysis...the results of which indicated her kidneys are probably fine! Needless to say, I'm very happy about this. But the more I think about it, the more it seems like the clinic folks jumped to conclusions way too quickly based on too little information. Am I off-base here, or is it perhaps really time to explore other local veterinary options? [more inside]

Veterinarian-filter: My 11-year-old kitty, Ryoko, has very bad breath these days and I think she has a gum infection. The soonest my vet can see her is Friday afternoon. She's eating fine and full of energy, but as an overprotective cat mom, I wonder if there's anything I should do in the interim so the problem won't get any worse. Do I need to worry?
I need a veterinarian in Manhattan (Washington Heights, UWS or Inwood preferred). Please come inside if you have a good one. [more inside]
I have an older dog whose front tooth is loose enough that I can wiggle it with my fingers. I'm taking him into the vet tomorrow, but before I do, I'm wondering: is it possible for the vet to remove a dog's tooth without putting him under anesthesia?
Yesterday, I picked up my 18-month-old pit bull-type mix Chance after three weeks of boarding. His coat is in bad shape in he is shedding unimaginable amounts of hair. What's the best approach to get him healthy again? [more inside]
Any recommendations for pet boarding in Birmingham, UK? (Bonus: good vets.) [more inside]
CatFilter: My family recently inherited a bushelful of cats, including quite a few kittens who are getting to the age wherein they need to be fixed lest they start producing more (inbred, in this case) kittens with each other! There are a lot of cats, however, and minimal funding with which to fix them. Does anyone have any recommendations for the cheapest spayings/neuterings in the Northern Virginia area? Thanks!
My adult dog lost a tooth a couple weeks ago after chewing on a Nylabone. I took the bone away, and was planning to make an appointment for cleaning/ scaling in a month or so, when I could afford it. Today I found another tooth and now I'm more worried that this is something that can't wait. Help please! [more inside]

My puppy had a seizure (her second, I think), what questions do I need to ask the vet when I take her to the appointment on Friday? Short version: 7month old mini daschund/min-pin mix, has had all shots, currently has worms (suspected tapeworm). Had a seizure when she was about 6 weeks but the vet at the time said it was nothing to worry about. Second seizure happened this weekend, over 5 months later. Internet research points to low blood sugar/crash as the most likely culprit but I want to be sure she's getting the right treatment. Other than describing both incidents to the new vet, I have no idea what to say during the appointment, or what questions I should make a point of asking? (story/details on both seizures below) [more inside]
YANMV - What is my dog doing in this YouTube video? Is she OK? (Apologies for bad sound). [more inside]
We had to put one of our cats to sleep on Saturday. Now that I've had a couple of days to think over some of the things that the vet at the emergency clinic said, I'm wondering if our regular vet is giving our pets the best care. [more inside]

My best buddy, an Australian Cattle Dog named "Willie Nelson" has Cushing's Disease , and will require medication for the remainder of his life (he's 14). The prescription is for Vetoryl (trilostane 60mg), and through my Vet it's $100, but he said he would be happy to write a Rx for an online provider. I see prices as low as $67, but I want to make sure Willie is getting just what the Dr. ordered. Which online provider do you use? which ones do you avoid ?
About a year ago, the vet at the San Francisco SPCA told us our cat needed to get her teeth cleaned (and possibly have some teeth extracted) and that it would be almost $1000. We know we need to do this, and were wondering if there are cheaper (but still good) alternatives available in San Francisco. [more inside]
SE Wisconsin: Does anyone know of a veterinarian in the Milwaukee/Racine/Kenosha/NE Illinois area that can remove a dog's tumor on a payment plan? [more inside]
Is there a veterinarian on the house? Bella, seen here, stuck her tail out a car door as it was closing. Big yelp, no blood, I can feel a lump about halfway down. She's also carrying it straight down which is not normal. [more inside]
It's getting to be time I took my cat Trilby to the veterinarian for his first annual check up since I adopted him last October 30th. But first I have to find a vet. Can anyone recommend a good vet in central or west end Toronto?
My dog just died and I need some answers. She was a 6 month old female stray. About 5 days ago, she became listless and weak - wanting to sleep whenever she could. In addition she felt quite feverish and she suffered from labored breathing - making a wheezing sound with each breath. [more inside]
