The VFW was established in 1913 and had overlap with living Civil War vets. Cursory googling doesn't turn this up, but could Civil War veterans join the VFW?
I'm about to release the sequel to my military sci-fi novel, which did super well last year (self-pubbed on Amazon). Experience has shown that whenever I release a new book, all of the others get a sales bump. So for the first month of the new release, I'd like to donate anything I make off of the original to a good veterans' charity. Naturally, this has led me to a lot of questions. This is not the only place I'm asking, but the hive has always been of great assistance. [more inside]
My father-in-law is a WWII veteran. My wife is trying to get him his Veterans Administration "aid and attendance" pension. But it's such a Kafka-esque process... what are the best resources available to help someone do this? (More after the jump.) [more inside]
I screwed up. I bought a policy through Humana that is evidently a replacement policy for Medicare for my father. I bought it in January of this year from my parent's old insurance guy. Now my dad is in a Veteran's Care Center and needs his Medicare back, they don't want this new supplemental. If I just cancel the Humana policy will his Medicare just pop back into existence? Would participating in auto racing help Veterans dealing with PTSD and/or depression? I am especially interested (although not exclusively) in getting feedback from few different perspectives: 1) Clinical Practitioners – Would this help or hinder someone dealing with PTSD and/or depression? 2) Veterans – Does this seem valuable from the perspective of someone dealing with PTSD and/or depression? 3) Racers – Any suggestions on what kind of racing might lend its self to this? (My thoughts were Autocross, Chump Car, or Club Racing) [more inside]
Historyfilter: how would I go about identifying and actually contacting G.I.s stationed in Rome post-WW2? I'm hoping there may be an uncomplicated way to reach the octuagenarians who spent some significant amount of time in the city right after the war. [more inside]

[WWII/Band of Brothers filter] At the end of BoB, we're told about each of the characters' lives after the war. I can't help but feel a bit... disappointed? to hear that, say, this soldier returned and worked as a cab driver, or as a mill worker. It feels anticlimactic and un-glamorous. Yes, I realize that may be a by-product of the hero- or myth-building that (intentionally or not) goes into WWII movies. Are there any books or articles that explore this area? [more inside]

How will the recent US healthcare reforms affect the VA hospital system? Will vets be more or less likely to seek treatment at the VA? Will the VA see an overall increase or decrease in number of patients treated? [more inside]
Breaking out of my funk filter: I'd like to do some volunteer work on a regular but limited basis (say, a couple hours a week). I feel that writing is one of my skills, and in the past I've helped friends write really great resumes and cover letters, so I think this might be a good thing for me to focus on. I suppose helping with writing college essays might also work. I have an idea that I'd like to work with veterans specifically, although I'm open to different ideas. And I live in the SF Bay Area. So can you suggest organizations that I might work with - either in my ideal scenario of helping vets with resumes - or doing something else that would utilize my skills?
Any battle where there were no survivors? Last two men standing kill each other as well? History preferred, literature accepted.
Eviction and future plans: My friend is 24, a recent college grad, lives in New York. Her father, mother and 3 young siblings live in a house (in Los Angeles) from which they are about to get evicted at the end of the month, having not paid rent for almost a year. Her father has terminal stomach cancer with a prognosis of 6 months. Her father is a disabled veteran and the family had been getting by on his veterans' pension. Her mother speaks, but does not write in English. My friend now finds herself in the position of figuring out how to handle this situation. For the hivemind: Are there programs, veterans' or otherwise, she should know about? General advice? We're at a loss for easy ideas.

What proven, documented examples exist of returning Vietnam vets being spat on upon arrival in USA? These stories have gone around for years; can anyone point me to documented cases that include credible, convincing evidence such as contemporaneous accounts / news stories, eyewitness corroboration by disinterested people, and, if possible, photographs.
For a scholarly research project, it would very helpful if I had the names of all veterans of the Vietnam War. Does anyone know if this data is publicly available? If so, where could I find it? Advice about specific offices or sources is especially appreciated.
