My brother just got a new Blackberry. (I know.) And a new phone number. He uses Verizon in New York. When he sends me a text, his messages come to my Gmail account as emails from [hisnumber]@vtext.com. Whyyyyyyyy? Please help make it stop. [more inside]
My current phone, a Samsung Galaxy S5, is all sorts of smashed and dying. I would like a replacement that runs a recent build of Android, works on my carrier (Verizon), and has a physical keyboard. Halp? (Details inside.) [more inside]
My husband recently irreparably damaged his cheap Verizon phone and wants to get a new dumbphone to use on a Verizon contract. We don't have any upgrades available. Verizon is asking for ~$200(!!!), even though prepaid phones of the same type only cost $25. Is there any way we can avoid paying this extortionate amount? [more inside]
We recently moved and chose Frontier (formerly Verizon) FIOS for our Internet service since the other option was Comcast. The service is the lowest tier (50/50) but we were coming from DSL with lower speeds and it was fine so we were expecting it to be OK. And it is. Sometimes. Other times it is really slow to unusable. Like, the airport on my Mac won't even connect to the router sometimes. Sometimes it will connect but I have to wait 2-4 minutes for an URL I typed in to load. Sometimes it goes up and down, disconnectng and reconnecting our wifi devices every few minutes. And other times, like right now, it's absolutely fine. [more inside]

G'day Austalian mefites! I'm going to be visiting Australia, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to use my phone while I'm there. It's a Galaxy S4 from Verizon. [more inside]
My Droid Razr M recently went kerplunk, and boy, do I hate the phone upgrade process. Basically I want to have a working phone again as quickly as possible with as little lost data as possible with as little time spent on this as possible. I don’t relish this as an opportunity to get a new fun toy, but if you would, please live vicariously through me! [more inside]
I wonder: should I buy new cell phone outright, or get another subsidized phone? [more inside]
I have an LG smartphone (lucid) from my previous phone contract with Verizon but no sim. So it just goes to a setup screen with a language selection option and buttons for emergency call or setup. Setup tells me I need a sim. What do I do to turn this into a usable portable computer with no phone? I'm not that interested in spending much money on it but it would be handy for a few things.
My well-worn Verizon iPhone 4 often doesn't ring for incoming calls when I'm inside my apartment. Is upgrading to a new phone likely to fix it, or do I need to change carriers? [more inside]
Are there inexpensive options for using my Verizon iPhone in Mexico? [more inside]
Several days ago, I had about 200 emails in the inbox of my Verizon account that had been accumulated over the past several years. All of a sudden nearly all vanished and remainder followed the next day. I called Verizon and they advised me that a foreign device had entered my email address. The inbox content had automatically transferred to the new device and could not be recovered. They suggested that I change my password, which I have since done. Does anyone have any idea as to what happened? Is it impossible to recover my accumulated emails? Should I be concerned and should any further precautions be taken.
Normally I’d solve this by myself, but a severe bout of depression is making it impossible for me to think clearly. I’m so overwhelmed I’m barely keeping myself from bursting into tears at work. I’m basically asking AskMe to proofread my plan, point out vital information I’m missing, and let me know if there’s anything else I haven’t considered. Please keep your responses simple--providing links to websites with directions is fine, so long as you're sure that those instructions are RIGHT. Details inside. [more inside]

A friend told me that I should ditch the FIOS router Verizon gave me a few years ago and buy an off-the-shelf router for better results. Has anyone had any luck doing this? I've searched the internet and I'm not able to find any specific details on what routers one would buy to do this.
We are moving to London and we'd like to bring our American mobile phones to use with whatever British network provider we decide to sign up with. We will no longer have a contract with our US carrier once we move. What do we have to do in order to use UK (and other European) SIM cards in our phones and have them work as well as they did in the US? Complication: Verizon [more inside]

My sister just replaced her US-based Verizon Motorola Droid Razr and I want to know if I can use it in the UK. That is all.
Made the mistake of buying an iPhone 5c on which no one can hear me. I've brought it back to the apple store twice, they wanted to give me a third phone and I said no. I'm stuck with the contract but want out of the phone. It looked like the Nexus 7 was going to be a perfect replacement until I found out it don't work with Verizon. Need a contractless, reasonably priced alternative to the 5c. I don't need or want the options of the 5s. Would like to buy new phone over the net not through Verizon or Apple. Any suggestions?
Please tell me what wireless plan to get for my family! We have four lines (mom and dad, two grown kids) on our family plan from Verizon for $188/mt. I think we can pay less but I'm really overwhelmed by all the options and possibilities. [more inside]
We're thinking of adding another line to our family Verizon plan - currently we have 3 people month to month, grandfathered in on unlimited data. Will we lose that if we add a new line/purchase a phone through them? [more inside]
Someone recently stole my Iphone 4 and with my upgrade coming up in December and not having insurance I had to resort to alternative means to acquire a new phone. I purchased a HTC thunderbolt online with a cracked screen for fairly cheap. When I first got it the "device" worked great. I can browse the phone and connect to wifi and have no SD card issues but when I went to activate it at verizon they stuck a 4G LTE SIM card in it and tried activating it for over an hour then eventually told me they were stumped and to buy another phone or call customer support. We are currently on an (expensive, $180 / month) ATT family plan with out iPhone 4Ses. We want to upgrade to the 5Ses and are wondering if t-mobile's coverage in the Boston area is good enough. Also, what plan would you recommend for the following parameters? Thanks for your help! [more inside]

A strange man approached my mom at work tonight claiming to be from Verizon, asked for her by name, and insisted she take a backup battery charger from him. Up until this morning, I have always been able to use my 3g network, make a call and browse the internet at the sametime on my iPhone 4s. This morning when I went to use my phone a message appeared (while connected to 3g) that stated, Cannot Verify Server Identity. Once I got that all figured out, the capability to use the internet while on 3g and talking on the phone was gone. I called Verizon and they claim this was never a feature on their iPhones and told me I must have a special phone. After some investigating, what they are telling me seems to be true, but I know that I have been able to do this the last year or two that I've had this phone. I did it last night while talking to my brother and relaying information that I had looked up for him. But! 8 hours later this feature is now gone and only works when I'm hooked up to my wireless. I'm just severely bugged that this is all of a sudden gone, when I can recall being in my car doing all this (safely parked) and talking to my husband while hes at work. What could have happened? Was I just imagining this for the last couple years or did they somehow take this capability away from me this morning?
Making the switch from Verizon to AT&T and I have a few basic questions. [more inside]
Have an LTE Verizon iPad 3. Want to be able to discontinue data plan during months when I don't need it but easily reconnect if I am traveling etc. Was able to do this in the past (with ATT on an earlier iPad) but now seems only way is to cancel which may require complex dealings with Verizon to reestablish LTE sim. Easy on and off was the attraction for getting a Verizon in the first place - now they seem to have changed policy without any warning. Help
I'm looking to replace my iPhone 4s. The most important factor to me is cellular data speed and reliability -- accessing the Web, syncing iCloud data, YouTube, stuff like that. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area (East Bay region), but it would be great if it worked well in New York, L.A. and other parts of the U.S. Should I go with Verizon or AT&T? Also, any pointers to websites with tools/reviews/resources to help me make the selection? [more inside]
I am curious as to why the NSA would only collect phone numbers from Verizon since there are so many other carriers. I have seen no other carriers mentioned in the news. Can you tell me what I'm missing here? Thanks.NSA
My daughter just got the Samsung galaxy 4 last month. It is using up data like a bat outta hell. I mean really fast. I told her to switch to wifi (like I do with my S3) whenever possible. I'm sure she has a lot of apps and of course she texts as much as any other twenty something year old. Thing is, she says that she can't send/receive texts and phone calls when she is in wifi only mode. We are with Verizon. Is this normal? What can we do?
