Eating well in Europe -- England, France, and Italy edition

It's happening!! Mr. Concolora and I are flying out to London tomorrow to start our three week tenth wedding anniversary European extravanganza and I'm about to pop with excitement.

We're going to be in London, Paris, Dijon, Verona, Vicenza, Venice, and Rome and we'd love some recommendations on where to eat. Snowflakes inside! We have two 'event' dinners planned, one in London and one in Paris. For those we're looking to spend somewhere in the thirty Euro per person range.

For everything else, we'd like to stay reasonably inexpensive while staying away from American style fast food. We love street food, we are incredibly adventurous eaters (offal is totally cool with us), and we actively want to eat local food. We have a small amount of French and Italian in our travelling party, and we're confident that we can pull off ordering , etc in restaurants where little or no English is spoken.

Help us eat well in Europe, AskMeFi!

Can you help me plan my trip to Germany, France and Italy?

I will be in Berlin, Prague, Venice, Florence, Rome, Marseilles and Paris this summer. I've never been to any of these places before. I will be spending about 2 days per city apart from Prague which is only 1 day. I realize it is a hectic trip and hard to see so much in such a short time, but that's the way the budget and time worked out. I will be traveling with two other students.

Advice I could use: where to stay (good hostels that you've stayed at?), tips/tricks to make things cheaper or easier to see (for example in Rome, I'm told that getting the bus tour package allows me to skip lines at the main tourist spots). We’re students and on a small budget and limited time in each city, so any ideas for making things efficient/cheaper would be awesome. Also things to see that I definitely don’t wanna miss in any of these places?

I have been using lonelyisland, ricksteves and seat61 but I was looking for more personalized advice.

THANK YOU!

Transportation - I'm traveling by train between most cities (already booked). So EuroRail pass is a nonissue at this point.

I have read some previous relevant threads, particularly this one about staying in Rome.

PS - I've never asked a Q before so I might be doing this all wrong....have mercy.

Venice vacation part deux: Is going in August a terrible idea?

For a variety of reasons, the second half of August is turning into a better time for us to take a vacation than October, as we had originally planned. We are hoping to go to Venice. We're OK with heat and humidity. Is there some other dealbreaker I'm not aware of? August appears to be low season for Venice, at least as far as airfare and hotels go. I assume there must be a reason. Is it just the weather, or something else?

Hubs and I live in a very hot, humid climate--Venice averages about 10 degrees *cooler* than our hometown in August--and we aren't too worried about coping with that part of it.

But I know August is the traditional European vacation month. Will many things be closed? Mostly we just want to walk/float around and look at art and churches and eat gelato, and maybe spend a day at the beach or see the Dolomites.

Also, "low season" seems to imply fewer tourists. Is that correct?

Hubs and I are contemplating a trip to Venice in October--acqua alta season. What kind of gear would we want to manage the high waters? Like: Would we want to bring full-on rubber boots, or will we be able to get by with regular waterproof shoes? (And hey, any other tips for traveling to Venice in October--yes, the Biennale is on the list--would not be snubbed. Grazie.)

Book search: looking to find the title/author of a mystery set in Venice.

Likely NOT Donna Leon, the mystery features a married British couple in Venice on vacation. Plot elements may include a suitcase of books, a murder that takes place at a film festival or fashion show. The couple become involved in solving the case.

Published in the last decade, perhaps.

Two of us are spending a week in Italy soon -- Rome, Florence, Venice. Help us find some cool places to stay! I know there are traditional hotels all over the place, but are there any options we might not be considering that are both relatively inexpensive *and* interesting? (Quirky also okay.)

Proximity to cools stuff is a definite plus, and we don't need to be bargain-basement. But, y'know. Rather not *waste* money. Hostels have crossed our minds, but we're not all all interested in sharing a room or bunk or whatever with folks we don't know.

Anyway: I'm trying to see if there's anything we're overlooking as we do our planning.

Oh: And it's for two of us -- a couple.

Thanks!

Short term sublets in Venice, Italy

Help finding housing in Venice for 2 weeks, June-July! Hello all,

I am engaged in an architecture project related to designing recycling systems in Venice for 2 weeks this summer. Our home base will be at IAUV.

The dilemma: I've got to find a short-term sublet (2 weeks give or take, up to 3 weeks if I pay for an extra week) for myself or myself and classmates in Venice during this time. If it is not walking distance or cab distance to the university, I'll need to find a place near public transit or with a bike. What would be FANTASTIC is if someone could point me to places to look. I've checked Airbnb and craigslist. When I did this in France, I used a site called homelidays.

The other great thing would be for you to help me understand what are the names of neighborhoods or areas close to IUAV (Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia) and approximately the travel distances whether walking, cabbing or public transit-ing. My budget is about $1000-$1500 for the 2 weeks. This can vary if I find a place with space for more than me, i.e. a place with room for 2, 3, or 4 people. Of course, in the case of friends of friends, either I alone or a classmate and myself would be willing to pay for the stay as well.

Thank you in advance for your guidance. Can't wait! :) Please let me know if I've left any core info out. I'll be glad to provide it.

P.S. I am also looking at flying into another city in Europe and taking a train or cheap flight over to Venice. Any tips on this would be welcome also.

mouse a Venezia per i capretti

Find-that-book filter: Help me track down a 35-year-old kids' picture book about mice in Venice. What I know:

* I was six when I read it, so the book had to have been published on or before 1976.

* It was a picture book. I remember black-and-white line drawings for illustrations; no color.

* "Mice" and "Venice" are the only plot details I remember clearly. I also vaguely remember something about the mice helping save parts of Venice from sinking.

Thanks -- Google is only turning up recent works (I had no idea "mice in Venice" was so much of a thing suddenly).

Best time to buy IAD-VCE airfare?

Going to Venice next June. When is the best time to buy plane tickets? Cruise and hotel are booked, all that's left to do is buy a flight. (IAD-VCE, June 2012.) At the moment the cheapest airfares are hovering around $1400-$1600, some with annoying day-long layovers in out-of-the way cities like Istanbul or Moscow. Do US-to-Italy airfares get any better at a point closer to next summer, or is this as good as I'm going to get?

(I've also tried booking separate legs to various European cities, then connecting to a train low-cost carrier or train, and the savings so far have not been considerable.)

Venice to Vienna and in-between

I will be spending a week in Venice, then am going to Vienna. How should I travel between them? Should I stop anywhere along the way? The Seat61 site suggests that the Venice-Verona-Innsbruck-Vienna day train route is good for some pleasant scenery. I like the idea of a day on a train with scenery, not so keen on the overnight train. Should I stop anywhere along the way (on that route or your suggested route?).

I leave Venice on a Saturday, and depart for home from Vienna on the following Sunday night. I am staying with a friend in Vienna, so I am really only looking for a couple of days diversion at most (if there is something worth stopping for). In Venice, we have rented an apartment in Dorsoduro.

I am interested in food, interesting day tours, natural beauty, and just general wandering around (on foot, or bike, perhaps). I am not even sure what I might be choosing to miss, so put up your suggestions if I should definitely not miss them! I was a big fan of the Sound of Music as a child - is Salzburg worth a stop?

Also welcome any tips for the above interests in Venice and Vienna.

Help make my LA trip unforgettable

LA-filter: Venice, Abbott Kinney. Places to stay, eat, drink in walking or biking distance? And: what or who replaced Stroh's? I'll be staying in Los Angeles for about a week in the next month. I fondly remember Stroh's breakfast burrito from last time I was there, but it seems they closed up shop. I also remember the food at Urth's Café to be quite okay (this was, of course, before they were in every episode of Entourage).

So please supply me with places to taste quality local food, laid back places to drink for thirtysomethings: not touristy, no waiting lines or loud music, you know the place, just ice cold beers on a terrace (went to the Otheroom last time, was a tad 'busy' for me).
Venice and Rome in 8 Days

Travel filter: Venice and Rome in 8 days? As previously mentioned we'll be in Venice for the Biennale next week - we have been thinking that Rome for a couple days would be great as well but are wondering if we're trying to pack too much into 8 days (9 nights) on the ground? If we try for Rome, any suggestions for contemporary art and design in Rome? Oh and Boutique hotels?

also any updates or recommendations on the Biennale in general?

thanks in advance.

I'm going to be in Venice for the next week and a half! Please give me some recommendations for food and sightseeing. Thanks!

Hi all. I am looking for recommendations for food in Venice (anything from a Paninoteca to a Ristorante). I've read that it is difficult to find good food in Venice, so I'm hoping the Metafilter hive mind can help me out. In addition, any recommendations for sightseeing would be great. Especially non-traditional/off the beaten path stuff. Thanks again.

What on Earth was going on in Venice?

I was in Venice for a few days at the end of March, and several times saw young people in the street participating in a weird ritual: they would read out a passage from a hand-made poster, the crowd would laugh, and someone would attack them with a foodstuff -- I saw a lot of flour, once a meat tray, and an unfortunate soul having canned whipped cream injected down his pants. What? They were all unusually dressed. I don't remember if the almost-naked guy in the rain was wearing anything amusing, but I do remember a girl dressed as a ladybug. And of course there was the fellow in football jersey and lime green swimming cap in the photo linked above.

I saw the ladybug shed her carapace and gambol off down the street, followed by a crowd chanting/singing something like "cok-ory, cok-ory, ba badi ba badi ba~umpapa umpapa". (Sorry I can't be more specific: that's just what I wrote down at the time, an aid to memory that evidently hasn't worked.) I'd been hearing the same sound on and off for days, so I assume the weirdness was quite widespread.

It occurred to me later that I had been staying right next door to the main buildings of the Università Ca' Foscari, and might have been hearing "Ca 'cari, ca 'cari...".

I figure it was some sort of student thing but am very curious about the details. Hazing? Performance? Ritual revenge for student government promises unkept? The locals I asked didn't know. Do you have any idea?

Anybody know who is "Icam" of "Venice"?

Last week, Open Culture posted a link to a breathtaking little video of Venice posted on Vimeo. The only thing Vimeo reveals about its video artist is the name Icam from France and that they have 38 other videos posted. I would really like to know more about this elusive figure who captured the colorful, yet melancholy, beauty of Venice so perfectly! Anybody know anything further about the video artist Icam?

Places to check out in Venice / Santa Monica

Walking in Venice/Santa Monica... so I'm in CA for another week. I'm a big walker... where should I walk? What are the great shops for music, books, film, sights, eats, drinks? Any great concerts, readings, plays I shouldn't miss? Or if there's something a single bus ride will get me to that you can recommend, please do so with specific boarding instructions. Thanks! My friends here are surprised at how far I've been walking whereas I've been surprised at how... lazy they're coming across as.

And... is there anyplace that actually sells Rose's Lime Cordial? I've found Rose's Sweetened Lime Juice but by no means is it the same thing.

Relaxation and veggie delights in Rome/Florence/Venice

Venetians, Romans, Florentines, lend me your suggestions! More specifically, nice places to relax and tasty vegetarian eats in the aforementioned cities. I like solo city travel, but I tend to get kinda stressed out and overwhelmed when there's to much to see and do. I'd love to know of any places/activities in Venice, Florence and especially Rome that I'd find lovely and relaxing, but still a good use of limited tourist time.

I'm the sort of person who loves to while away time in cafes, so there's little chance of me neglecting that option. I'm looking more for places like, for example, Les Bains du Marais, which is where I wish I'd gone for a break on my last overly stressy visit to Paris. (Though by all means, suggest your absolute favourite cafe or gelato place or whatnot.)

I'll be in Italy over the next couple of weeks, if weather is a factor in your suggestions. And as mentioned, traveling alone, if that makes a difference.

On the veg front, I'm not all that concerned about finding vegetarian food options wherever I wind up (I'm lacto-ovo, and this is Italy, after all). I'm mainly interested in super-duper-awesome vegetarian places that are worth seeking out.

(FWIW, I'd also welcome any general suggestions of fun things to see/do/experience in these cities that aren't listed in the usual guidebooks, though that kind of question been pretty thoroughly addressed on AskMeFi before.)

I need to find a good hotel in Venice.

I'm going to Venice, Italy with my family. Can you recommend a good hotel (doesn't have to be cheap) and also, can you tell me what do I have to look for when searching for one? My parents are inviting us (family of 7 adults) to Europe in May. One of the places we're visiting is Venice, before going to Florence and Rome. We all know that most hotels in Venice have a very bad reputation (either SUPER expensive, or very small, or are just extremely old). My parents already had a very bad experience once with a hotel someone told them about and ended up being just awful (my parents are not internet savvy so they didn't check it out beforehand), and we want to avoid that this time. So, I need a recommendation for a good hotel. We're willing to pay a reasonable amount (I don't know what a good hotel goes for, but we'll pay it).

If you've been to Venice, can you give me a short intro to the city? Particularly about the areas where I should and shouldn't look in for a hotel and such.

Thanks in advance!
