Hey folks! I have pretty much a full recipe of Thug Kitchen's Landlocked Ceviche in the fridge right now, minus the cilantro and avocado. Basically, a salad of cauliflower, tomato, red onion and jalepeno doused in lime juice and salt. It's...just ok. Can I shoehorn it into tonight's dinner? [more inside]

I'm visiting my boyfriend in the Cambridge/Boston area, and am trying to plan a fun date night. I'm vegetarian, and he's gluten free, dairy free, and has some other allergies. I'm very happy with cheese and nice cocktails, he's usually happy with fish or chicken and cooked green things. Any ideas of a good Friday night place? [more inside]

We want to have a multi-course (5 courses or more) vegetarian picnic meal as fancy as our surroundings. Any suggestions for dishes? Special snowflake details inside! [more inside]

My girlfriend and I are spending the long the weekend skiing in Killington Vermont. We've never been here before, we are looking for restaurant recommendations from locals or folks that have spent significant time here. In particular, places that have decent vegetarian options (I eat eggs and dairy but not fish) would be great. [more inside]

I want to make a drop-off meal for a family of four after the mom gives birth. Mom is vegetarian, dad and the two little boys are not. I am not vegetarian and I have no idea what to make! Ideas? [more inside]
I've started eating vegetarian, but I've really been missing meat. Recently I ate mock duck at a chinese resturant and it was delicious. I looked up it's ingredients and found out it is made of wheat gluten. I looked up how to make wheat gluten at home and came across this article. I tried using this to make wheat gluten, but the end result looks unappitizing. Without being too crude, it looks like excriment. I attempted a couple of times to shape the gluten to be more like that of a strip of chicken or similar meat, but the shape would't hold and no matter how I shaped it the gluten ended up lumpy and slightly tubular. I assume there must be a way to form wheat gluten I make into a more appealing shape. How do I go about doing this?
I am thinking of scaling back my factory farm meat intake and eating only the happy cows who are given hugs and sunshine every day. Complicating factor is I like a LOT of protein to support my lifting, and I'd never be able to afford as much $7+/lbs meat as I need to support that intake. I would like to hear the experiences of weight-lifting semi-omnivores on how they made this work for them. Bonus question: if I'm cutting out factory farmed meat, should I cut out eggs, fish, and whey protein too, or are the conditions that produce those a little less horrible? [more inside]
My husband and I will be in Portland, Oregon for a Saturday night in about 6 weeks - I'd like some help narrowing down a restaurant choice... [more inside]

Vegetarians of MeFi! What are you having for Christmas dinner? I am totally capable with vegetarian dishes in general, but most of them are rather light and don't seem substantial enough to be a Christmas dinner. So what are you having? [more inside]
I’m travelling with my significant other to New Orleans between December 29th and January 3rd, so we are looking for recommendations (food, bars, entertainment, etc.) Specific details and questions below the fold! [more inside]
It's cold and dark in the UK winter and I wish to feast on warming, comforting savoury pies. Can you share your favourite vegetarian recipes please? Fussy eating details below. [more inside]
You're vegan? Tell me, what delicious things did you eat this week? [more inside]
I have an acquaintance in the UK who sends me "essentials", such as Jaffa Cakes, that I can't get here in the States. In return she's asked for some good American candy. The catch is that she's vegetarian. Rather than spend ages looking through lists of off-putting ingredients, I was hoping I could get some recommendations here. Bonus points for Halloween-themed candy (I'm thinking of candy corn, etc). Thanks!
I'm a vegetarian with several severe food allergies and I'd like to hear your suggestions for restaurants in Toronto. [more inside]
I'm making pide for dinner tonight. I am sick of my regular fillings - what do you put in your pide? I am especially looking for vegetarian fillings. Thanks!
Where's the best place to have a (vegetarian/vegan - friendly) brunch before an early afternoon Twins game?
My dad and cousin are visiting tomorrow— what's a good vegetarian-friendly restaurant in Brooklyn or Manhattan where we could get a table for three around 7pm today on short notice? It should be pretty nice and quiet. Dirt Candy would be perfect, but it looks like we're too late to get a table for tonight.
One of us can't eat gluten or nightshades (peppers, tomatoes.) One of us is a vegetarian and doesn't eat seafood, and one will eat meat but not seafood. None of us care about cocktails or wine lists. What are some reasonably-priced (aim for under $40/person, will consider more), no-reservations, sit-down, casual/smart casual restaurants that we all might enjoy? Bonus points for a menu also excluding peanuts/peanut oil, extra super bonus points for Richmond/Sunset area.
I'm a (nominal) vegetarian for environmental reasons. But I do like the taste of meat. Somewhat of a practical compromise is that I allow myself to eat pest species, or animals that are culled then sold for good reasons. So I wouldn't mind eating some Kangaroo because they are being culled anyway, and they have a small environmental footprint. But in general, I'm not sure what is pest/culled for environmental reasons. My Google-fu has failed me here. What are some sources of meat/poultry/seafood that are suitable for a environmentally conscious diet? I'm not averse to eating things shipped from different parts of the world.
Help! My foolproof plans for Eurovision party food have come to nothing. [more inside]
Does anybody use whey protein powder to cook anything savory, especially any dinner dishes? I realize this is a longshot question, but web searches haven't turned up much of anything. And again, I'm looking specifically for any successful recipes that use the whey protein powder, rather than fresh whey. Thank you, o hypothetical kitchen wizards!
I'm currently omnivorous, but have recently enjoyed some vegan meals. I'd like to learn to cook vegan, but have no idea how to build a vegan pantry. [more inside]
I have finally made seitan from scratch (rather than just buying Field Roast), using one of the baked seitan methods. It was GREAT and astoundingly easy! I am now contemplating the many, many flavor profile possibilities that seitan has to offer. Do you have a special spice mix, marinade or preparation method? I'm all ears! (Er, eyes, I guess, since this is a text-based medium.)
I'm looking for romantic end-of-the-world themed activities. Movies to cuddle during, food to make and eat, music to dance to, alcohol to drink. [more inside]

My lunchtime staple is a bowl of black/kidney/pinto beans or lentils and brown/white rice, couscous, or quinoa with some type of vegetable mixed in. However, I get bored with the same sauces and seasonings (usually barbecue sauce, peanut sauce, salsa, or just plain with some onion and garlic) and am looking for new ideas. Must be vegetarian (dairy and eggs okay) and bonus points for *cheap* store bought sauces/dressings or homemade from ingredients I might already have in the pantry. I'm not a picky eater and am not concerned with fat/calories.
I'm trying to identify a cookbook I once had. Difficulty: I remember almost nothing about it. [more inside]
Carnivores of Mefi, please help this long-time vegetarian make a smashing dinner for her beloved's birthday! I did see this askme, but I would not consider myself an experienced cook and I really only need one knockout meal (though I will check those resources out!). If you were a meat-eater that did not like pork products or seafood, what would be a great special meal that a regular ol' girl could whip up with a few hours of preparation (and a not-huge bankroll) that would make your day? [more inside]
LionessIndex (my wife) and I will be heading north from San Diego to Yosemite in early July, via Rte. 395 (yes we have air conditioning). My wife is vegetarian, I am an omnivore but will gladly eat non-animal-product stuff. Where can we stop for meals? [more inside]
