I'm looking for suggestions for a new series to read. I enjoy what I think of as supernatural mysteries but I don't know where to turn to next. I like stories that take place in the real world but within this sort of supernatural part where all those things that aren't supposed to exist (magic, vampires, etc.) actually do and I like mysteries, so I really like combinations of the two. Series that just have the first component (and a compelling plot) are also welcome.

So I've done:
The Dresden Files
Sookie Stackhouse
Jaz Parks books
Twilight series (please suggest things with better quality writing)
Harry Potter
And probably tons more that I can't think of at the moment.

I really prefer a series as opposed to individual books because I tend to read quickly and then I've moved on to a new book and I start wondering what happened to that one character until I realize that character was in a different book altogether. So a series helps with that issue.

True Blood trivia - Jessica drinks blood

In Season 2 of the HBO show True Blood, what is the exact mixture of blood types that Jessica thinks tastes ok? Supposedly this was determined by Bill. I realize this is a silly pop culture reference, but a friend is trying to stump me, and I have no TV. Please help me show him up.

Other than vampires and zombies, what human-like beings are rumored to be immortal? Obscure and obvious answers all appreciated! My students say they like vampires because they are immortal. Same with zombies. What other “human-esque” creatures can I teach them about about that are rumored to have immortality”?

What are the awesomest songs about vampires? So far I've got: Bela Lugosi's Dead, Concrete Blonde's Bloodletting, Mazzy Star's Taste of Blood, The Misfits' Vampira, The Birthday Party's Release the Bats, Outkast's Dracula's Wedding, and My Dying Bride's Kiss to Remember. Genre isn't really important, so long as they're rad.

Mike Hammer meets Hammer Films?

Know any good horror/crime fiction? I just finished the not-bad vampire-detective novel Already Dead by Charlie Huston, and was wondering if there were any other good crosses between hardboiled and horror? Books, comics, film -- I'm interested in all of them.

As a side question, although it was asked last year, any other cutting-edge, gruesome horror book recommendations would be welcome. I'm interested in learning more about the growing zombie-lit craze, and anything that doesn't resemble Anne Rice is welcome.

It wasn't "My Friend, the Vampire" or "M is for Monster"...

A young adult vampire book, published late 70's, early 80's? Involves a kid who meets the vampire in the basement of a library, falls asleep and wakes up having no memory of it. Main vampire's name is Radu, but I believe there were several other vampires around, also with "traditional" names (a "Carmilla" perhaps?). That's about all I got to go on, and since Radu is the name of both Vlad the Impaler's brother AND the guy who helped Ray McNally write "In Search of Dracula", I am batting a zero. Other really iffy threads circling around my brain are:

I believe the cover had the kid peeking over the top of his book at the bottom and the cape of the vampire swirling up to the title. The cape and overall color was maroon.

It wasn't for kids, it was definitely "young adult". I recall the main character got in trouble for breaking & entering and was a borderline delinquent.

In fact, the entire tone of the book was much more disturbing than most other kid vampire books. Little actual fighting, or blood drinking. Most of it shrouded in fog. It just felt very "dangerous" and real

It's possible, based on what I remember of the library layout, and where i found it (both dubious) that the author's last name began with an S-Y? No guarantees though.

Hickey embarassment reduction?

Emergency hickeyectomy - STAT! I am mortified to post this, because I am no longer a 14 year old girl, but....an overzealous makeout partner left his mark - several times - on my neck last evening, in almost too many places to even cover with 6 damn scarves.

Not only do I have to teach a class all day Tuesday, but I'm going home Wednesday to my PARENTS', and I look like someone took a lead pipe to me.

Besides scarves and foundation, is there ANYTHING I can do to reduce the appearance of these bruises? Ice? Heat? Decapitation? I am so mortally embarassed I am this close to caling in sick tomorrow. Help a girl out.
