We are trying to refinance our mortgage, and the appraisal came back low. Now our loan to value ratio is lower than expected, and the closing fees are higher. We don't feel like the appraiser did his job correctly (more inside for details). We are pretty sure a second appraisal would come back much higher, but the cost of the appraisal is about the same as the increase in fees. What should we do? Have you successfully contested an appraisal (is such a thing possible)? If not, can we use this low appraisal to request a lower assessment on our property taxes? [more inside]
I am interested in learning how to differentiate high quality jewelry from common pieces--especially on the resale market. When I go to an antique store or thrift shop and look at jewelry, it all looks the same to me. Sure, I can differentiate by color and number of stones, but that is about it. How could I develop the ability to tell the difference in quality of jewelry, apart from the price tag that a store manager or dealer has put on it? Are there resources that you have used, such as blogs or books, to help you learn to appreciate the truly great from the mediocre? Any general advice for someone that wants to be a jewelry connoisseur? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
We’re having a yard sale soon, and most items are normal, household things that I’m not worried about pricing reasonably. A few could be valuable -- even after checking eBay’s Sold listings and googling, I don’t know. I want to avoid making a $10 sale that goes on to be featured on Antiques Roadshow. I’m not sure how to price them, and also how to handle the possibility of breakage. The kinds of items I mean are… [more inside]

Several friends and I have clubbed together and purchased a fixer-upper house. We intend to work on it as best we can ourselves, use contractors when we have to, sell it when done, make profit, etc etc. The issue is going to be, how do to count and 'value' the contribution each person has made? I want to spend less than $400 to buy a fully functional new desktop. Regardless of the CPU it would have, I want to be able to put in an i7 later on. I want to be able to add more RAM and a powerful video card without having to get a new case or power supply. HDD should be at least 1TB. It can start with 4GB of RAM, since I plan to upgrade. If it's 4GB i'd prefer it to be on a single stick. I would also prefer Windows 10 to be already installed.
I consider myself a fairly savvy traveler yet one who still makes noob mistakes that end up costing me disproportionately in either in time, money, or enjoyment simply because I didn’t know better. Although I’ve gotten better with each trip, it leaves me wondering what easy changes I still have left to make that can boost my travel skills without having to learn them the hard way? Bonus points for recommendations that take advantage of a smart phone! [more inside]

I ran into some issues of "Scientific American, dated February 23rd, November 30th 1878 and a third February 1st, 1879, all in good shape. I also have one copy of "The Contemporary Review" dated November of 1879, in OK shape. I am curious as to whether they have any collector's value at this point. I have no idea how I came to own them, as these were dated before my father was born.

Our Dad passed away last year, leaving his house to my siblings and me. Dad's defacto partner is interested in buying the house (she has no financial stake in it currently), so we need to get it valued. The house is in a town approximately 7 hours drive from where the nearest siblings (myself and my sister) live. There are are a couple of registered valuers in the area, so that's not a problem, but my question is: is there any particular need for us to be there when they come through? [more inside]

I saved some interesting books from being thrown out by my public library. Apparently they were discarding part of their local historical collection. I grabbed a bunch that looked cool/interesting and it turns out one or two of them have sold online for decent sums. I'm not interested in selling any of them (they are cool!) but I am curious as to how their ex-libris-publica condition affects their worth. [more inside]
