Getting the family home valued - should we be there?

Our Dad passed away last year, leaving his house to my siblings and me. Dad's defacto partner is interested in buying the house (she has no financial stake in it currently), so we need to get it valued. The house is in a town approximately 7 hours drive from where the nearest siblings (myself and my sister) live. There are are a couple of registered valuers in the area, so that's not a problem, but my question is: is there any particular need for us to be there when they come through? [more inside]

Ex-libris-publica depreciation of rare/valuable books

I saved some interesting books from being thrown out by my public library. Apparently they were discarding part of their local historical collection. I grabbed a bunch that looked cool/interesting and it turns out one or two of them have sold online for decent sums. I'm not interested in selling any of them (they are cool!) but I am curious as to how their ex-libris-publica condition affects their worth. [more inside]

How to get a dispassionate appraisal of what a house is worth

What's the most dispassionate way to determine what a house is worth? Uncle owns a house and may sell it to us at a favorable rate, but we'd like to figure out a fair price to set overall, so that Uncle isn't shafted but we don't overpay, either. [more inside]

In a Business setting, how do you measure the value obtained from intangibles such as fostering communication with junior members of the organization?

In a Business setting, how do you measure intangibles such as fostering communication with junior members of the organization? For example VP holding open door meetings every month? In the end I need a metric (A number)? The problem here is that its very hard to articulate value of such things in a metrics crazy world/companies? And I need a metric!

Does it make sense to pay to replace the clutch on a older car?

My 2004 Tiburon GT SE needs a clutch replacement but I can't decide if putting that much money into the car is worth it. How much can I expect to pay a mechanic to perform the work? I'm guessing in the $1K range but I don't know. And if so, does it make sense to put that money into car that's almost 8 years old? I bought it used a few years ago and still owe $5K on it, so dumping it isn't an option. It has only 54K miles and is otherwise in very good condition. How should I proceed?

Where to sell decent cigars rec'd as gift?

Any idea where could he sell them to get a little cash instead? Ebay seems to be out of the question for tobacco. There are 19 Macanudo cert vintage 1988 #1 in the humidor pictured here. Thanks.

Star Trek Memories and Trauma

As a 10 year old child I went with my mother, myself and my 7 year old brother went to EJ Korvette's on 46th Street to meet an alien. Well, actually it was Leonard Nimoy (in full makeup and costume) as Mr. Spock. It was 1969 and he had just come out with his new album Mr Spock's Music From Outer Space. We were in a crush of people. My brother was having trouble with the crowd. The store was packed. Finally my mother snapped and dragged us out of the store screaming, "My son is suffocating, get out of the way!" Anyway, after hysteria by yours truly, we went back. The crowd was gone. Someone took the album from my hands and sliced the covering plastic with a razor. I didn't care. I was looking up at Mister SPOCK from my favoite show of all times! I wanted to say something, anything. But my throat was dry. My brain useless. He signed the album. He signed it... Spock in cursive. I still have this album today. Is it worth anything? Other than my memories and the original price? Leonard. I love your photos. Call me...

Buying property with a water view... How can I confirm that the nice view will remain unobstructed over the years?

We are house-hunting in the Seattle area. Looking at property with water views. Willing to pay the higher price that comes with a view. But I'm reading some horror stories about how a neighbor will build a tower in front of your view, or neighbors who refuse to trim their tall shrubs. And then your view is obscured and your property value drops. How do I research this? How can I know if the viewshed is protected or not? What sort of monitoring would I need to do over the years? I will ask my realtor to research it, but I'd like to hear from people with experience with this issue.
