Help with a Valentine's Gift. For part of my Valentine's gift for my partner, I am trying to make a list of open-ended questions, just to get conversation going. We don't have problems talking, it's more that I thought even after a couple years together I don't know how she feels about a lot of issues. And I'd like to.

So, I would appreciate suggestions for broad questions that would lead to interesting conversations. So far, I've come up with things like "If you could go on vacation anywhere, where and why?" and "If you won the lottery what would be the first thing you buy and why?" Obviously these are fairly shallow and I'm very willing for much deeper world issues than that. I just kinda need my brain jogged from this myspace-bulletinesque mindset.

Please suggest away. TIA.

Valentine's Gift for Him

A Valentine's day question - mea culpa! I'd like to go for something handmade and creative for the dude, but I'm afraid school is sucking up my imagination. Ideas? So I realized just today that there were two weeks left till Valentine's day, and I'd like to get a head start on figuring out what to do. I've read through the old Valentine's Day posts on Metafilter - good ideas, but none of them quite as relevant as I need them to be. I'm a girl, he's a guy, we've been together a couple of years, I've been crazy busy for the past month (and will be for the next two weeks), and am on college student budget.

Things I've done in the past for various occasions: Mix CD with custom liner notes, Video game montage set to music, Origami stars, cartoon drawing of us, hand painted mug, mini scrapbook made from scratch (hand bound and everything)

He's pretty ambivalent on flowers - he'd like them 'cause it's me, but not much beyond that. I thought of doing origami flowers, or stealing the wire butterfly idea, or combining them, but there seems to be something missing. He's not a crossword puzzles kind of guy, though I wouldn't mind trying to set up a treasure hunt - but even then I'd still need ideas for how to set it up, as well as the finale. Also, caveat: I have a midterm on the 15th, and I'd only be free after 7 PM.

Other info: We're usually pretty low-key. His vices: video games, hardware, sound systems, 3D modelling, electric guitar/bass, Monty Python, local wildlife (chipmunks, squirrels and birds primarily) and chocolate/candy. He lives in residence. I have access to the local craftstore and lots of origami paper. Dinner and desert will be par for the course, I imagine. We do go out semi regularly (once every month ish). Hope me?

Actually. If anyone can recommend a low-key, not-toooo-sappy love poem intended for a guy that I could calligraph or something, I would love you forever. Something like When You Are Old by Yeats, but less ... feminine.

Anon 'cause I occasionally ask questions for him and he checks my profile.

Romantic (lacto-)vegetarian-friendly places in Manhattan on the UES?

I'm trying to book dinner reservations on Valentine's Day in Manhattan, as the really nice places are filling up fast. Suggestions for romantic (lacto-)vegetarian-friendly places on the UES? Budget of ~$100 per person, pre-tip.

A restaurant with lots of mixed drink and cocktail options would be preferable. So far I've found this and this question, but I'm looking for places that are not hardcore vegan (milk products open up a great many options!), and a place somewhere uptown and probably a bit fancier.

Thanks!

Hope me Romeo, you're my only hope. What will you be writing to your sweetie in your Valentine's Day card tomorrow? I'm a hopeless romantic with a poetic license from Edward Lear.
What should I mail to my nephew for Valentine's Day?

I'd like to mail my 4-year old nephew a cute valentine & would like to include something in the envelope that isn't candy. I'd like there to be more inside the envelope than just a card. Does anyone have any ideas for inclusions that can be sent easily in an envelope that a 4-year old would love? He wants to be Superman when he grows up, if that helps any.

Valentine's Day Woes

I'm looking for some suggestions on what to do this Vday. My Girlfriend and I rarely get to go out anymore because of my hectic work schedule and I want to make this year extra special... Here's the lowdown: I work upwards to 70-80 hours every week. We rarely get to go out anymore. I'm usually only able to spend at least an hour with her every night. I'd like to treat her to something extremely special this year. I managed to line everything up with my job and actually get the 14th off for once (1st real day off in 4 weeks!). I'd like to have a full day spending time with her. I'm open for any suggestions at all. I'm a workaholic in the making and so don't get outside much except for the occasional dinner. I am planning on taking her out to the restaurant where we had out first date. But for the entire first part of the day I'm drawing a blank. What do normal couples do? Taking her to a movie or shopping seems kind of out of place for Vday. I'm grasping for straws here. I want to make this day special for her. I've thought about taking her to a spa and letting her relax but I'm not sure about me going to a spa and I don't want to leave her. Any ideas?

Anit-love-song mixtape

Love-sucks-anti-Valentine's-Day-Filter: Help me make a mix of anti-love songs. Visualize a mix you might give your ex after a really, really nasty break-up. Something that says "F0ck you, I hate you, and every second we were together was torture, you evil witch," with every song. Maybe starting with OMD's "If You Leave," and getting nastier from there. Alternatively, I also like the sentiment expressed in "If You Leave," so suggestions for a mix that says "If you think you broke my heart, don't kid yourself, I never really cared about you anyway," would be appreciated, as well.

Bonus points on both counts for songs set to a sentimental or poppy melody, again along the lines of "If You Leave." The idea here being that it should be a mixtape that, were it not for the lyrics and sentiment behind it, the girlfriend might otherwise really like and listen to. Just to give the knife that extra little twist. Hence Eminem's "Bonnie and Clyde" doesn't really work. You get the idea, right?

v-day wannabe sweetheart: go big? (or forget with illegal yummies?)

VDayfilter: Woman I like, have for a while. Close friends for years, and she knows how I feel. Have pretty much stayed away from the old 'nice guy' just hang out stuff for the last year, but we still get together for a drink once or twice a month. Other than the occasional fun here and there, we are both single. I'm pretty well over her, so I'm not too worried about this.. regardless of what I do, I won't stress.

Her friends all say the same things I think in general: "don't understand why you aren't together! -- so perfect with each other! -- the chemistry seems so strong! " and from people we meet together for the first time: "How long have you been married? -- Y'all are so happy together! -- What?!? You aren't a couple?!"

We like a lot of the same movies, TV, comedy, etc; our political arguments are engaging and heated, but we always end up having fun and laughing when we realize we can't always express but actually think alike; we are close in age (30, me 32) and seem to have similar desires for the future (2.5 kids/dogs/cats/house/etc).

I've never been able to find out from her any specifics about why we shouldn't take the next step, and neither have her friends. I have felt her trying a bit harder since I started pulling away of late, but nothing too illuminating.

So, dear mefites, I ask for your opinion: Should I take one last shot at it, and if so, does some crazy big gesture for tomorrow make sense? (I do know she has no real plans.) I hope I'm at the point it doesn't get to me too much either way, but I can't help but feel some unease around a HallmarkTM day like tomorrow.

Need a good custom idea for a Valentines party

A friend (though not someone I know very well) is having a valentines party... she is encouraging people to dress up... what should I go as? here is her Evite write up.

It's Valentine's Day, the holiday beloved by Bacchus, the god of safe sex and organic wine. So come hither, to the Bath House, where we will have games, libations, and general merriment.

As an offering to the gods, please don a costume that evokes the spirit of love. (For example: a nudist, Bacchus, Dr. Ruth, a flower child, Heidi Fleiss, a flasher, a celebrity couple, a bride, Venus, the Marquis de Sade, Romeo and Juliet, a j-date employee, or your sweet self.)

Sample the Nectar of the Gods. Spin the bottle. Spend sixty seconds in heaven. Condoms not included.

-------------
I've been to one of her parties when i first got in town about 5 months ago and we have made plans to hang out from tiem to time but it never worked out (we are both kidna busy) so anyway i dont know her TOO well.. and i am not sure if any of my friend will be going with me..

so i need an idea for a custom that will help me socialize (HA!) but not make me feel uncomfortable!
