I choo-choo-choose you.

Looking for cutesy little puns of the kids' valentine variety. I would like to make a series of love notes for my guy in the style of those lame valentine's cards we all got as kids. I plan to draw a little picture to go with each note, so short and simple is best.

Obvious ones:
"I choo-choo-choose you" (thanks, Ralph Wiggum!) with a picture of a train.
"Bee mine" with, you know, a bee.
"You're my sweetie" with a candy or something.

I would love to hear some suggestions that are more creative, clever, and have better puns. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Who has overestimated the American public's desire for chocolate this year?

My favorite holiday, Half-Price Candy Day, happens four times a year: Nov. 1, Dec. 26, Feb. 15, and the day after Easter. I usually hit a chain drugstore or grocery store for my Conversation Hearts or Robin's Eggs, but it just occurred to me that I could probably do better. Where will I have the best luck finding discounted high-end candy this Sunday? I usually see a lot of extra holiday stock at Godiva, so that's going on the list. Have you walked into a store this week and thought "There's no way they're going to sell all these pink boxes before Saturday?"

I'm in New York City, so I'm particularly interested in local places, but chain and web stores are good too.

I'm still going to stock up on Conversation Hearts, though. I like the white ones.

International Valentine?

How can I send flowers from the US to someone in France? Or, what should I send instead? A friend of mine that I dated this past summer is studying in France this semester. We basically broke it off because she was going to be abroad for 9 months, and neither one of us wanted to be tied down. But, I'd like to send her something on Valentine's day, if for no other reason to be cute and spontaneous.

How would I, an American, send her flowers? I can't really call up a French florist, even if I knew where one was, since I don't speak *any* French, and to top it off, I have a mailing address for her, care of the university, but I don't have a physical address since she's not allowed to give it out for privacy's sake for her host family, so any flowers would have to stay fresh in a box for up to a couple of days until she gets her mail from the university.

So, should I send flowers? How? Or should I mail her something else?

What would *you* want for Valentine's day from a friend/slightly-more-than-that, if you were out of the country?

Oh, and do the French even celebrate Valentine's day? Maybe I should work that angle somehow?

Need V-Day Card Sentiments for the Elderly Please

I recently volunteered for a community project to make homemade Valentine's Day cards for local elderly residents. I'm enjoying making the cards, but I suddenly find my mind blank! I need to come up with some good sayings/sentiments/quotes to put in the cards. These will all be for people I've never met, so that knocks out a lot of the usual sayings. Since a good deal of these people do not have family around, I'd love it if I could say something that will make them smile. I just know you guys will have some great ideas! THANKS!

Cheap Chicago Valentine's Day

What's the nicest + cheapest Valentine's day date in Chicago we could have? Boyfriend and I have been off and on for more than a year, Super Serious Official for just two months. We're very, very poor grad students. We'd like to do dinner and something else special, but we don't know where to do either. We'd prefer to stay inside. What do you recommend?

For my Robo-Love

I need something cheeky and robot inspired to write in my S.O.'s card today! The running joke in our house is that my boyfriend is a robot because he's not too expressive. To that end, I purchased a blank card with a lovely little robot on the front for my love for V-day, and I'd like to put something clever and robot related inside. We're not too big on celebrating Valentine's day, so it doesn't have to be overly sensitive. The only idea I have so far is to write in blocky, digital looking letters. I'm hoping the hive mind might be more inspired!

Help me find a suitably "butch" gift for my new girlfriend.

I've been dating a really wonderful woman and it seems we have fallen very much in love with each other. She doesn't wear makeup, or jewelry aside from two small, non-dangly earrings in each ear, and isn't particularly "girly" in any other respect, so I'm kind of at a loss as to what to get her for Valentine's Day. I'd like it to be something she can wear all the time, and since it's our first together, I'd like to make it something memorable, but any kind of flashy jewelry would probably be met with a luke-warm reception. I've been thinking about some kind of "butch" friendship bracelet, or something like that, but the ones I've found are generally pretty shoddy and cheaply made. She's been talking about wanting some color on her body - either painting her toenails or getting a tattoo - so something colorful without being super-feminine might be nice. Any suggestions? (BTW: She's in her 30's.) Thanks.

Mi amas vin

Esperantists: I want to send a friend a valentine in Esperanto. What should it say? Also, what design should I draw on the card? So. He's male, I'm female; we're friends, I'm ridiculously in love. In the course of one of our long, rambling, drunken conversations he let slip that he was fluent in Esperanto as a teenager. Instantly I thought "Aha! I am so sending you a valentine in Esperanto!"

Since then I've been looking at the general structure of the language; I speak French, Italian and German so Esperanto seems fairly intuitive to me. However, I know there are better Esperantists on MeFi, and I hope you will help me out.

I'm planning to do this with brush and ink on a blank card from the art-supply store, so just a sentence or two will do. (My default phrase would just be the words "gusta kiel vi estas" with a circonflex over the G; is this correct?) Extra credit if you can suggest an appropriate or cool design to paint on the reverse.

Delivery in NYC for Valentines Day?

I would like to have something fun delivered to my SO at their office on V-Day. What sort of fun things could I get delivered in NYC?
Romantic (lacto-)vegetarian-friendly places in Manhattan on the UES?

I'm trying to book dinner reservations on Valentine's Day in Manhattan, as the really nice places are filling up fast. Suggestions for romantic (lacto-)vegetarian-friendly places on the UES? Budget of ~$100 per person, pre-tip.

A restaurant with lots of mixed drink and cocktail options would be preferable. So far I've found this and this question, but I'm looking for places that are not hardcore vegan (milk products open up a great many options!), and a place somewhere uptown and probably a bit fancier.

Thanks!

Over the onion dip, sick of the roses: What do do for Superbowl weekend & Valentine's Day

Anti-holiday ideas for Superbowl weekend and Valentine's Day? The V-day ideas can be for just-broken-up individuals, best friends, anything non-loverish or for people who simply want to forgo the dozen reds and box of chocolates (unless they're very, very different chocolates) for something less tradish. The closest thing I can come up with for Superbowl weekend for those who want to go as far away as possible is something like a tea party, but I'm open to just about anything -- including ways to get through it with a minimum of fuss if you have been somehow shanghaied into the celebration. If I need to ratchet this down a step, it could be a guide to how to throw a superbowl party when you hate football.

Last-minute Valentine's Day flower delivery

Valentine's crisis: I need to have flowers delivered to either Half Moon Bay (CA) between 9 and noon, or an apartment in the Castro after 11pm. I admit poor advance planning. Obviously I'll call every florist within 25 miles of Half Moon Bay, but I'm wondering if anyone has any bright ideas in case they all laugh at me and hang up. Offer to pay them more? (I should probably try to keep the desperation out of my voice.) I've also considered a ridiculous (and expensive) plan involving a courier service, a friend in SF, and after-hours delivery to her apartment.

Any advice would be welcome, preferably before I panic and book a flight to SF to deliver them myself. Thanks.

Homofilter: What does a man get his boyfriend for Valentine's Day? Flowers are a safe bet for a man to give a woman, and there's plenty of "it's for your girlfriend" propaganda about V-day all around... so when a guy wants to do something for his special guy on that Hallmark-holiday for mushy stuff, I'm drawing a blank.

My own valentine...

It's almost Valentine's day, I've just had a bad breakup and I'd like to buy myself a nice box of chocolate. What should I buy? I'm adventurous and willing to try something unusual. I'd like a box of chocolate that is good quality, perhaps hand crafted, maybe a sampler. Mostly I want it to taste really really good. I'm trying to treat myself here.

There's a bunch of good looking stuff out there, and I've done some searches, but what actually tastes good? I like dark chocolate a lot, would be interested in some variety. But I'm trying to do a step above a Whitman's Sampler from the corner drugstore.

Bonus points if I've never heard of it before! Also nothing outrageously expensive.

[ValentineFilter] Please help me make a great Valentine's Day mix CD. My boyfriend and I have been living in different countries for nearly a year. I want to make him a Valentine's Day mix to remind him of us (and add photos of us for iTunes album art!). Please give me some song titles of songs that have touched you. The music that we like together: 1) indie rock, generally acoustic guitar or piano (ex. The Shins) 2) arena rock - specifically Styx, Journey and REO Speedwagon 3) New Order 4) Stevie Wonder. Thanks for your help! (I had to make this anon so that one day when he's bored and clicks on my MeFi username he doesn't see all this and ruin the magic of the CD.

Most preposterously imaginative romantic gestures ever?

With next month's Valentine's Day looming, what are the most preposterously imaginative romantic gestures you have ever given / received / heard of? I've combed the AskMeFi archives and though I can see questions about romantic ways to propose marriage (and even my own Valentine's Day question from last year), I can't see anything about romantic gestures in general.

No limits to this question other than that it must be possible for the (reasonably comfortably-off) average citizen to achieve. So no etching sweet nothings on the moon using space lasers, please.

Here are some that come to mind for me:

- The couple who had a wedding ring made of bone generated from their own cells

- The farmer who wrote "I love you" in cow dung and then flew his wife up in a plane to view it

Anti-Valentine's Day

Soliciting ideas for an Anti-Valentine's Day Party. You know, something to make us singles happy on the Worst Holiday Ever. Good movies? Food selections (I'm thinking Rocky Road ice cream)? Drinking games?

roses before valentine's day?

How long before Valentine's Day can I buy roses and hope for them to still be decent? Are all the flower vendors hip to this tactic?

Is there a good, distinctive, and affordable online lingerie store?

WIth Valentine's Day rapidly approaching, I have a question to help spread the love: anyone have any recommendations for an online lingere store that's not as ubiquitous as Victoria's Secret and more distinctive than Frederick's of Hollywood? Kind of like this, but priced for mere humans.
