Woman bit by unvaccinated feral-ish cat. Must wait 10 days for vaccine?

John's unvaccinated, fractious outdoor cat, Wretched Beast, bit Janet when she tired to help John capture the cat so it can go to vet. John and Janet live in Westchester County, New York. John took Janet to the emergency room and has paid her subsequent medical expenses. Janet wants the rabies vaccine. The doctor instructs John to quarantine Wretched Beast for ten days. If at the end of the ten days that cat starts acting rabid then the doctor will administer the rabies vaccine. Janet wants the rabies vaccine NOW. Shouldn't the doctor give the rabies vaccine sooner rather than later? Suppose Wretched Beast doesn't show symptoms for a longer period of time?

How much should potential visitors to Israel be worried about polio?

My family has planned, but have not purchased plane tickets for, a trip to see relatives in Israel a couple of months from now. We are concerned about the presence of wild polio virus there, apparently imported from Syria. The CDC is recommending that adults get a booster dose of IPV (the "killed" virus used in the countries, like the US, where polio infection has been essentially eradicated) and that kids are up to date with our vaccination; for our 3-year-old, this would mean getting her last dose of IPV early (though not so early as to violate any guidelines.) But Israeli children are getting OPV, the live vaccine. If I understand correctly, IPV is effective at preventing you from actually getting paralytic polio, but it does not prevent asymptomatic infection with poliovirus. [more inside]

Pro-science Anti-anti-vaccine Animated Web Video from Australia or NZ?

I recently saw a great animated piece expressing exasperation (that I share) with the anti-vaccine, pro-feelgood-pseudoscience crowd. It was from Australia or New Zealand (maybe somewhere in the UK?), it rhymed, it was clever and stylized in a way I want to reference to an artist friend. Ringing any bells for anyone, or have the vaccines rotted your brains, too?

How do people enroll in foreign clinical trials?

I want to look into enrolling in an oncology clinical trial that is being conducted in Germany. The lead researcher indicated my being Canadian could be an issue because I would have to live in Germany for the duration of the trial (four months) and because I don't have German health insurance. I know people go to other countries to take part in clinical trials, but how do they do this if they lack health insurance in the country where the trial takes place? [more inside]

URGENT advice needed re: rabies inoculation in Russia.

Hi there, My girlfriend was bitten by a cat earlier today in Eastern Russia. Obviously this is a rabies risk area and so she needs to get a rabies inoculation. According to her, when she went to the hospital she was told that if she has the inoculation course she will essentially be incapacitated - unable to swim, go in the sun, or even walk vigorously. Was something lost in translation or is this complete nonsense? I can't find anything online to suggest that these kind of side effects exist for any rabies shots? Please help! Thanks.

Edmonston B, Measles, Vaccination?

I just finished reading an article from the New York Times Magazine about controversial anthropologist Napoleon Chagnon. One thing in particular about the article struck me- there is a claim (at least that's how I read it) that measles vaccine caused a breakout of measles in a group of isolated indigenous people that did not have measles exposure or immunity. I'm confused because I'm pretty sure you can't get measles from vaccine. Is there something different about the Edmonston B vaccine? [more inside]

Is this year's flu vaccine effective?

I keep reading stories (1, 2, and this previous question) about how bad this year's flu season is. It's been a few months since the vaccine has been available so have they been able to determine if this year's vaccine matches up with the flu strains that are spreading? Meaning, is this year's flu vaccine actually effective? When is that determination made? [more inside]
