Outdoor tablecloth: what material?

I need to buy a fairly sturdy tablecloth for a small unshielded outside table in an area that's usually sunny, but where conditions range over the year from scorching hot / serious UV, to occasionally rainy and maybe a bit windy, to cold-but-not-(usually) freezing. What kind of material am I looking for? [more inside]

Kill them all! Or at least prevent their birth.

I need to keep scientific samples (chips) in solution for weeks at a time, and they're growing bacteria. I suspect biologists have a good way of dealing with this, since they tend to do more solution work than I do; are any of you out there able to point me in the right direction in terms of UV lamps or something similar? I don't understand spectroscopy or spectrometry analysis.

I need help understanding analysis of mass spectrometry and UV, IR, NMR spectroscopy readouts. I'm looking up tutorials on websites and re-reading my textbook, and while I think I understand the theory behind each method I'm drawing a blank when it comes to actually interpreting results to complete problems. Circuit/Battery combos for driving a single 5mm LED

I'd like to use a single 5mm UV LED (3.4Vf, 20-25mA) to charge a daub of glow-in-the-dark paint. It only needs to be lit around 1 minute of every 10 (or 6 seconds of every 60), and only when the (room) lights are out. What battery/circuit would be most economical to operate, and require the least-frequent battery changes? [more inside]

morning or afternoon swims?

When are the sun's UV rays weaker: from 10am to 11am, or from 5pm to 6pm? (East coast USA, this month.) Beach has strict swimming hours, 10am-6pm. I'm looking for which is the better hour to go swimming -- regularly over the course of June -- in a bathing suit, very-wide-brimmed solid straw hat, and sunglasses, but no sunscreen.
